Kings to sign Joel Edmundson from Toronto

Yes. Englund is a 6-7 guy. Edmondson is a 4-5, who was a second pairing D-man on a pretty good playoff team last season. Health is an issue with him, but hopefully playing third-pairing minutes against weaker competition will help with that.
The move is almost defensible if Gavrikov and Anderson weren’t the other 2 LD on the depth charts. With the added context of very little controlled zone clearing/puck movement ability already on the roster, adding one more player in this style at this cap hit at his age and with his injury history is indefensible.

Meanwhile Toronto gets Jani Hakanpää, for two years at a $1.5MM cap hit. He’s bigger, plays with an edge and played 2 minutes more per game than Edmundson…

If Kings would have offered him $2MM he would probably have accepted and we would have saved almost $2MM and got a more durable and probably better player.

Great work Blake!

Maybe they are banking on him getting injured, like he always does, so they can overstep the salary cap come playoff time……….

You're advocating for a Finn instead of a Swede? You're gonna get deported.

So having calmed down a bit, this is not a terrible signing. An upgrade to Englund; JE played on the 2nd pair for TO and will play on the 3rd here. Less than a 10% raise over his last contract. A steady, fairly nasty guy for Clarke to play with. And the Kings always have to overpay for UFAs. LA has never been a super attractive destination for UFAs for tax and other reasons, even after the Cup wins. So the Kings probably had to add another year to be able to sign him over whoever else was interested.

With him and Jeannot in the lineup the Kings are a lot less pleasant to play against.

Usually you end free agency day feeling better about your teams chances. Blake has managed to do the opposite.

We gave buckets of money for a pylon LD. A guy who was traded from Montreal to Washington for peanuts with 50 percent retained and then from Washington to Toronto for peanuts with 50 percent salary retained. Ummm ok. That's a bold strategy Cotton...

Oh man. Blake signed a D-man who's potentially worse than Dion Phaneuf when he traded for him back in 2018. I mean, Phaneuf was a pylon too but at least he somewhat contributed to the O at times. Blake is trying to think Edmundson is a diamond in the rough but he's getting fool's gold here. And for four years with an undeservedly rich contract? I thought the Kings were doing well for finally getting rid of PLD just days earlier but now they're saddled with another unwanted contract. Blake has just morphed into post-2014 Lombardi with the way he's finding players and giving contracts.

Edmundson being Blake’s white whale is so ****ing funny. Obsessed with a 10 point a year one-dimensional d-man when the league is dominated by d-men who generate offense. Really says a lot about the state of the organization’s priorities.

Interesting that on the Dangle podcast, they don't hate the player at all. They think the contract is ridiculous and ragged on Blake and Bergevin hard, but thought he was okay in his role.

Edmundson might have worked as a one year reclamation project kind of deal.

And even then it would've been pretty iffy.

But you know, why not, 4 years. I mean at least he isn't giving 8 years anymore. :mhihi:

Trevor Lewis is solid for 800k. Busts his ass and plays the game the right way. For 3 million a season, he's grossly overpaid.

The same here as my reply just above. Blake (and his crew) is getting paid a lot of money to know things like this! How is it possible that they still gives Edmundson 4x$4MM???? I mean, both the years and the money is so stupid!!
Blake and team can fix him, just like they swore they would fix PLD...only to trade him. This is another bad deal that will not age well.

But on the bright side, Blake will tell us we are now contenders with all of these moves and who knows - we might just get lucky.
