Kings to sign Joel Edmundson from Toronto

Can someone please explain to me HOW is it possible that Blake doesn’t know this…
It’s extremely clear that Blake doesn’t trust defensemen analytics. If he did he wouldn’t have moved Durzi for pennies on the dollar. He wouldn’t have given Walker away for nothing. He wouldn’t have traded for Gavrikov and extended him. He wouldn’t have paired Englund with Spence for a full season.

I would love to see this question posed directly to him. The information is out there, it’s readily available, and most of us armchair GMs sitting behind the keyboard know where to find it, and how to interpret it. So it truly does beg the question, do our professional scouts not trust these analyses?

Or does Blake not listen to the scouts.

Cap’s going up and he had multiple teams trying to sign him, so I think Blake more or less paid market price. Not thrilled with this signing, wanted Dillon, but he’s a punishing player who’ll also block shots and I like that.

Clarke is enough of a rover that he should be able to get away with less of a puck mover. Whereas Spence freed from Englund should have a bit of a breakout. I expect 40 points from him.

I hear you but Edmundson hasn’t been an effective defender in years. Blake paid above top dollar for 4 years on a frail, slow, big body, who can’t move the puck and he’s got a lot of mileage on him. This is an objectively terrible contract regardless of where the cap is going because of the term alone.

This is Blake adding his Sean O’Donnell/Scuderi/Regehr all serviceable role players BUT the Kings already have this exact type of defender in Gavrikov who is making 5.88M! 9.73M for Gavrikov and Edmundson is widely inefficient use of the salary cap.

I wouldn’t call him the exact same player as Gavrikov at all. Gavrikov can actually defend, skate, and get his stick in lanes.

If not for Clarke I’d feel significantly worse about this signing, but as it is I regard Edmundson as fulfilling a specific role relative to what Clarke will be doing. He’ll hit and crosscheck while Clarke wheels around and carries the play up ice. It’ll be risky. It’ll backfire at times. But Clarke will generate his share of offense too.

Chychrun with Doughty and Spence with Mikey would have been awesome. I’m sad that didn’t happen, mostly because this doesn’t answer our question about who’s 2nd pair LD next year. Blake can’t pay 6M+ for Gavi. Then I’ll really be upset.

So I guess we’ll commiserate even more in year.

I agree. Gavrikov is more of a Willie Mitchell type defender. Edmundson is 100% a Regehr.

Blake and team can fix him, just like they swore they would fix PLD...only to trade him. This is another bad deal that will not age well.

But on the bright side, Blake will tell us we are now contenders with all of these moves and who knows - we might just get lucky.

What an absolute joke of a signing, you trade Gundstrom to San Jose for Burroughs and then sign this clown to a 4 year contract at almost $4 million. The trade now becomes useless and this contract will be an albatross starting trade deadline this year. NO one will want to pick this guy up; we will be stuck with him and have to buy him out.

It is time for management change in this organization, it's a given Blake must go, but sorry you Luc lovers, but he has to go as well. This team is definitely heading in the wrong direction. It is embarrassing to see the article BLASTING us for our free agent moves.

Please Phil, dump these guys as fast as we can!!!!

Luc is the problem. I believe that Luc pushed to bring in Marc Bergevin. All 3 clowns need to go.

How bad was the Kings defense last year. I thought they were pretty good during the season. Were they even in the top 10?
