Kings trading Quick and a first plus to Columbus?0

I think we all understand that Quick is done. But to kick him to the curb like this is pouring salt in the open wound. Really, really leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Jonathan Quick did as much for this franchise as Dustin did.
As much as Anze did. As much as Drew did.
He EARNED the right to go out a King.
They are the Four Horsemen of the L.A. Kings.
And to do Quickie so dirty is disgusting.

This team is not winning a Stanley Cup this year.
You who think the west is winnable for this team are delusional.
IF we were to get to the west finals, Colorado would stomp us out like a bonfire.
We're just not there yet. And we surrender a 1st in a deep draft for 2 mediocre rentals?

People thought Blake was gonna make magic happen?
He gave a career AHL goalie 5 million for 3 years and a NMC.
He has shown he can draft pretty well, that's it.
****ing clown. Traitorish clown

I was having an awful day and this just makes it so much worse. Was gonna stop drinking at midnight
but **** it. Apologies in advance if I get out of line but I don't give a **** right now.

I know it's is just a business at the end of the day, but there has to be more to this that is not yet known. Right now it's just confusing.

Well, trying to see light in a dark situation...

1.) Korpisalo has been good this year. Significantly better than any of the goalies on the Kings, including Copley (who was still "good enough" to bring the Kings to the playoffs, barring any significant injuries). And he did have a spectacular payoff campaign in 2019-20...9 games and .941 SV% after a .911 SV% in reg. season, so it seems he CAN elevate his game for PO. This will now probably become a 1A/1B situation that's significantly better than what the Kings had before.
Though it's true he had quite a few underwhelming seasons. He seems very up and down regarding his yearly form...on a plus side - he's probably not going to cost a lot to resign unless he leads the Kings to a Cup final (which I guess makes it worth all of this even if he walks?).

2.) If Rob recycles some prospects for a 1st rounder and at least ONE of the incoming assets is resigned I would worry too much about trading the 1st in itself. If he doesn't trade some of the prospects...it's a head scratcher for sure, especially considering the surplus the Kings have. He needs to focus on quality over quantity, which practically begs for him to trade quantity for a 1st to a team that's severely lacking prospect depth.

3.) Quick...what can I say, it's baffling they would trade him. I guess he now regrets not getting at least a NTC. That being said...maybe they offered him the option of going down to the minors seeing how they simply can't afford having a roster spot for him and he refused (by not wanting to be with Ontario and/or not wanting to risk being claimed by some xy team)? I mean, maybe he held the team "hostage" in this situation and Rob responded like this...who knows.
Maybe he's not furious with Rob but more so with the whole situation? Him not being able to find his game and putting the Kings in quite a pickle because of it. I can see a situation where he agreed to be traded to CBJ instead of, let's say, Arizona, or being put on waivers and sent to minors/getting claimed by whoever. Of course he's not happy...he shouldn't be happy even without a trade. Yes...he should understand that NHL is also a business and with all he has done for the Kings it would probably be as unfair as this trade is if he held the team hostage for the entire season and likely causing them to finish worse because of it.

4.) Gavrikov is what worries me the most here. He's had 1 really good season so far and is by most accounts "not elite". I'd better understand making so much drama with Quick if the return was Chychrun...

I almost started a thread like this to swing some emotion the other way. Everyone is crestfallen for Quick, but there has to be some light in the darkness. There has to be some positives here.

I think to point 4, I wasn't convinced that emptying the cupboard for Chychrun was the move. We have a lot of mobile defensemen on the roster and in the pipeline. What we need is some size and toughness and a natural lefty to realign the pairings. This feels similiar to what Edmonton did to move their PP QB for a tougher stay at home guy in Ekholm. We need defense and checking, not scoring from the blue line. Just tonight watching Roy activate was a reminder that we need more balance. And Edler and Walker are terrifying.

I think there may be some more subtle analysis that reveals all this to be a decent move once the emotional wounds heal. See my Zen thread.

Ok how reputable are any of these Twitter player cards analytics? This is the 3rd set I've seen on the Columbus players and it's the 3rd different scouting report using ostensibly the same set of stats.

I like Doms better, Jfresh are similarly offensively focused but have much more recency bias for skaters. Generally they are really good at predicting the about to be overpaid player.

And anyone disputing that he EARNED it, remember who told us all that he EARNED it - the dude who traded him.

I have a really difficult time to believe Rob just blindsided him with no warning, no discussions...

What I see happened here is:
Rob wanted to trade Cal and send Quick down to the minors. Trading Cal proved very difficult and Quick refused being sent down. Naturally, as he could've been claimed by anyone.
If you can't send Quick down, you're basically wasting a roster spot for the rest of the season, which is far from ideal.
Since Rob didn't want to jeopardize the development of this team and basically risk wasting an entire season (that could prove pivotal in the development of this team as a whole), he traded him.

Now, there are three ways this went about:
1. he talked with Quick and Quick agreed to be traded to CBJ; the reports about him being "mad" about it are overblown (he's probably displeased with this entire season concerning his poor performances).
2. he talked with Quick and he disagreed, but Rob did it anyway - Quick would be understandably mad
3. he didn't even talk with Quick and did this

Personally I don't see option 3 as a possible scenario at all...

I think option 1 is at this point quite likely. I believe Quick wouldn't want to jeopardize this team's development and success and he agreed to the trade. After all, is it really so horrible that a millionaire is traded to a different team very close to the end of his career? This happens quite often. Why would he make such a big deal of it just because he's this team's legend? Didn't most people agree that after Dean's loyalty shenanigans it's time to drop the loyalty to players that harms the well being of the team?

It's entirely possible the rest of the team wasn't in on the plan which caused the commotion. And Quick has every right to be upset, but as much at Rob but at himself for his inability to find his game and the rotten luck that this situation even occurred.

Sometimes some crazy s*** happens. This season it's Quick's unforeseen demise as a hockey player and a situation where he was indeed an obstacle for this team's progress. It's very unfortunate but it's not tragic. He's as healthy as he's been yesterday and still has millions in his wallet. He WILL get his number retired and NO ONE will forget him. Him accepting this fate and helping the team would actually make him an even bigger legend in my eyes.

**** rob blake. Quick did something that Blake couldn’t do and that was give LA a Stanley Cup

As most know, I am a huge supporter of Quick. Unfortunately Quick was not going to get another start for the Kings, even if he was not traded. It sucks, however so many wanted Quick traded many years ago.

I did not want to see him just sitting on the bench for the remaining 20 games. This had to be the hardest move ever for Blake. Next season he would have to be playing for another NHL team. It just sucks.

Hey, the last 2 Times the Kings traded with Columbus at or near the dead line, it seemed to work out (2012 & 2014).

History does repeat it's self!

Quick seemed to be increasingly disinterested on the bench and to a lesser degree when in games. After the initial shock at the news of the trade, I just said to myself, "Yeah, not that surprised."

I'm not surprised. I am a bit broken hearted. Seeing Quick sit on the bench was painful. This is too. End of an era watching a player that brought us a lot of joy.

I can't believe we traded assets for a rental package. The goal should be to continue building the team, not win a round.

This exactly. As others have said, this team is not yet at the point at which taking on rentals makes sense. The odds of them getting past the Avs (and I’d add Edmonton and maybe Vegas, when push comes to shove) in a seven game series are pretty long. To then do this to Quick on top of it all makes this a real head scratcher for sure. I’m really struggling to understand the logic here when all the morale impacts are considered in light of the short term benefits, whatever they may be.

I'm at a total loss...

I get how a goalie and a lefty D could fill some holes, but rentals for a 1st? Moving Quick when he was so close to riding off into the sunset?

I'd really like to hear some official comment, something that will help me react to this and understand what their reasoning was.

Many here seem to think that Blakes got some master plan of trades coming and I hope that's right, but I'm unconvinced.
