Kings trading Quick and a first plus to Columbus?0

Per TSN, we are also sending a 3rd round pick. The 1st round pick is conditional on the Kings making the playoffs.

This sucks but I'm not going to criticize Blake. Quick has the worst save % in the NHL. The only two goalies lower than him on the list are Spencer Martin and Cal Peterson, and they are both buried in the minors. Quick is ranked #51 . Korpisalo is #15 . It's not realistic to bury two goaltenders with a combined $10.8 cap hit in the minors and Quick simply can't play at an NHL level.

It's sad how this ended, but it was already sad how this was ending for Quick. None of this changes that he's a legend, the greatest goalie in Kings history.

Is there no plan to re-sign Korpisalo and Gavrikov? At least one of them? If not, this reeks of that trade for Sekera and Lucic where we gave up a lot for not a lot.

Noooooooo!!! Even though he sucks, he's OUR sucky goalie!!

Well said, Nyssa. This is definitely bitter sweet.

Heart-wise hate it. Business-wise, like it.

Don’t love that we gave up a 1st in a deep draft for two rentals neither of which are grade “A” . If we resign Gavrikov makes it a lot better.

Every year there’s an obsession with big defensemen who play tough minutes. They’re playoff-ready players that can play nasty, handle the grind, and strike fear into their opponents — it makes sense.

It would make more sense though if there was more attention paid to how the players actually perform in those minutes. Just existing within a difficult environment isn’t enough and it’s certainly not enough to warrant the king’s ransom these types usually garner on the market. Vladislav Gavrikov is the latest in the genre, a potential landmine contending teams should avoid at his current exorbitant cost.

In the right context and situation, it’s possible that Gavrikov can be a capable player for a contender. He doesn’t have a lot of help in Columbus and his numbers aren’t bad relative to his teammates. Over the last three seasons, Gavrikov’s relative impact on expected goal differential is plus-0.04 for the Blue Jackets and his impact on goal differential is minus-0.11. That’s a pretty neutral profile in a difficult role. It makes sense that some might believe he can carry that over and contribute to a contending team’s top four.

The problem with solely looking at his relative metrics though is that it ignores how much Columbus is actually caved in when he’s on the ice. Over the last three seasons, the team has earned just 44.6 percent of the expected goals and 41.4 percent of the actual goals. Those numbers are even worse this season. Essentially, it’s giving Gavrikov credit for being the tallest kid in kindergarten — in the grand scheme of things he would still come up … short.

That’s not because he’s just weak offensively either. There’s a myth that Gavrikov is a strong defensive defenseman, but for three straight seasons Columbus has been one of the league’s worst defensive teams and Gavrikov is at the center of that. Only one defenseman in the league, teammate Andrew Peeke, has been on for more goals against per 60 over the last three years and only nine have been on for more expected goals against. Maybe he’s a good net-front presence, but he spends an awful lot of time there thanks to his inability to move the puck safely and his passiveness at defending the blue line.

The excuse that Gavrikov doesn’t have help is one way to look at that, but it’s backwards from what’s actually happening. The worst teams are as bad as they are specifically because they count on bad players to contribute in a big role. Playing big minutes on one of the league’s worst teams is often viewed as a positive trait, but oftentimes it should be the opposite. Those guys are a huge part of the problem.

Maybe Gavrikov does play well in a lesser role on a better team. In fact, he almost certainly does. But the risk is far from worth it given the price tag it’ll take to acquire him.

Heres doms take gavrikov pre trade...

I'm wondering if the guy the Kings really wanted was Korpisalo, with this season as his audition. Presumably he's the new No. 1.

I further wonder if Merzlikins was the one they really wanted? He had a nice run a few years back when Columbus upset Tampa in the 1st round.

But yes, likely the new #1 . I would have liked to seen Petersen moved instead of Quick. JQ deserves to retire a King.

I doubt moving Petersen was a possibility without sending a lot of assets along with him. He's got two more seasons at $5M per. Who's going to take an AHL goalie with that contract?

Anyone else seeing reports that Columbus is trying to flip Quick and Vegas and Seattle are both interested? I have seen his game disappear BUT I do not want to be playing a pissed off JQ in the playoffs.

Petersen also could have stopped the trade due to his wonderful contract - doubt Columbus makes a ten team list of preferred destinations.

Because in the bizarro world of the LA Kings, the Conn Smythe, greatest goalie we ever had had no trade protection, but the unproven let down in the minors has plenty.

It sure feels like that for me. I remember when the Kings got Lucic (with salary retained). One of the guys available to us in the teens was Kyle Connor. A big fast forward who could score goals. Dean got us the 1-year rental instead of the guy who scores 30-45 goals a season regularly.

If I'm giving up a 1st and a 3rd, I'd much rather have gotten McCabe from Chicago with 50% salary retained. That would be filling a need on LD for 2.25 years rather than 0.25 years.

Also, with Toronto and Boston already loading up, who was Blake bidding against for a LD? I'm just floored that we traded useful draft picks for rental players. That is not what elite GMs do.

This audition gets Cals contract past the next signing bonus too. Suddenly hes only worth 7 million over two years, one million in real salary 23-24 meaning you could rehab him and ship him out before that last season where hes owed 6.

AEG looking desperate.

This is really bad on so many levels.

Unless Rob has an ace for later this week this is gonna be talked about for a long time.

They did Quick dirty!

Quick: Sad to see him go but if the guy was going to try to play next season he wasn't going to do it here. So he would not have retired as a King anyway. Bummer but that's the way it was.

The real question is whether giving up the 1st in THIS draft was worth the two players they got. I'm not so sure. We'll have to wait and see.

Will always love what Quick did during the Cup years, but he was given a chance the last couple of weeks to show he could still do it and he was not good. I wish him well and can't wait to see his statue. Sucks he couldn't finish as a King.

Edmonton. My feeling is Blake was more interested in Ekholm and Soros, and settled for what CBJ was offering

The trade has a lot of positives.

We now have a legitimate starting goalie who can tandem with Copley. If he plays well, we can probably re-sign him at a reasonable cap hit.

Durzi is now moved off the left side. He also can be moved off the penalty kill.

I'm sure Gavrikov is just a rental and that's fine, as I wouldn't want to pay him Mikey Anderson type money long term. The UFA market is deep this offseason and we can find a replacement.

The 1st rounder hopefully will be a late one.

Still have all our prospects. At least for now.

By the way, to those saying Quick was done wrong, trades and players moving on are part of the game. If you look up at the rafters at Crypto, Dionne, Gretzky, Robitaille and Blake were traded. Vachon left to be paid more elsewhere. If Quick was having a decent season, and was traded, that would be one thing. But his poor play is why this happened. Blake's job is to try to win. Quick's play was an impediment to that.

Also, to all of those saying he is going to retire, he said earlier in the season that he intended to keep playing after this year. Maybe he'll change his mind now, but if he does it's because his play has fallen off so badly.

Can't help feel a lot of the people who are mad about this trade would also be mad if Blake did nothing. The team is tied for 1st place in the west. He made the team better. Everyone on the team deserves the chance to "go for it". I read "They aren't going to win the cup this year" a lot. I doubt the players think that way.
