Kings trading Quick and a first plus to Columbus?0

Looking forward, what is done is done. Love Quick, hate that he was traded.

We all know Blake made a huge mistake giving Cal that NMC. He was forced into this move due to Cal's contract, and the play of all 3 goalies. Options were limited.

Jonathan Quick did as much for this franchise as Dustin did.
As much as Anze did. As much as Drew did.
He EARNED the right to go out a King.
They are the Four Horsemen of the L.A. Kings.
And to do Quickie so dirty is disgusting.

This team is not winning a Stanley Cup this year.
You who think the west is winnable for this team are delusional.
IF we were to get to the west finals, Colorado would stomp us out like a bonfire.
We're just not there yet. And we surrender a 1st in a deep draft for 2 mediocre rentals?

I agree with all of this. However, if the Kings do reach the West finals (possible, given the relative parity of the division), then this first round pick is between 29-32. In other words, it's almost a 2nd round pick, which takes a little sting off it.
Having had a chance to sleep on this trade, I still feel (and HOPE!) there's more to come. IF either is extended, and / or Blake can flip prospects to recover a 1st rounder, then this trade gets better.

just another reason to boo blake, dude has no loyalty to the kings as history has shown.

This discounts what the new guys bring. The team will love them both.

Just processing and venting:

That locker room just took a hit. It's a shock to the culture -- Quick's competitive nature, attitude, and leadership, which has been a mainstay, has just been removed.

**** Blake.
(**** Todd too)

Can't help feel a lot of the people who are mad about this trade would also be mad if Blake did nothing. The team is tied for 1st place in the west. He made the team better. Everyone on the team deserves the chance to "go for it". I read "They aren't going to win the cup this year" a lot. I doubt the players think that way.

Agree with this 100%. I don't understand these fans who keep saying "Kings don't have a chance at the cup this year, so why make a trade like this" - I'm sorry but if you're in the playoffs you have a chance. Kings fans should have learned this lesson permanently after the 8-seed performance in 2012. With the West in its current state, the Kings have a completely reasonable path, possibly even with home ice advantage, all the way to a Stanley Cup Final appearance. If the Kings make the WCF, we'll have traded away the 29th (or lower) pick of the 2023 draft. Who's losing sleep over this?

I love Jonathan Quick and what he's done for this franchise, but he had every opportunity to improve his play this season and he just hasn't been able to do it. Blake's job is to ice the best team possible, short and long term, and he's doing just that.

I personally have a huge problem with some random new goalie coming in here and taking the playoffs away from Copley, whom without we'd be sitting pretty with the Ducks at the bottom of the division. Maybe I'm just a married to a player type of guy but I feel that'd be wrong, and any player coming in would be the back-up. In that same breath, Quick is a perfectly functional back-up, though if Copley went down we'd be screwed. So unless the guy is becoming #1 NEXT year - this trade seems really weird to me. And that's all besides the fact of treating an absolute LA Kings icon like Quick as nothing more than a commodity, which I guess he is - but with all the Brown "forever a King" stuff just a month ago, it leaves a super bitter taste in my mouth. I kinda wanna post pictures of my stuff Quick signed on here. Got a beautiful jersey and framed photo - met him in person - was a highlight of my life (the whole '12 summer, but I've posted that story too much).

I think it's not so much the trade but how it went down. It seems like this came unexpected to Quick.

I think he said it best. Yeah, on paper this is a good trade for the kings heading into the playoffs, I think its how it was handled that is leaving a bad taste in peoples mouths.

Boo Blake for improving the team. Totally!

I know you're really proud that you were right in guessing that Quick would be traded, but a lot of people are emotional and pissed about it - so I'd' recommend against gloating about a stupid random guess you made, which was in no way accurate other than "Quick was traded". Good job on that I guess? but just please yourself how you see fit and stop bragging about being right about nothing. And "improving the team" remains to be seen. Let's, you know, see what these players do first.

Kings are 4th in the conference in points percentage. We have a good but not great team. Colorado has won 6 straight, is getting healthy ahead of the playoffs (a la Tampa with Kucherov) and will likely crush the Kings in a 7-game series.

We should be realistic about making trades in terms of rentals versus improving the team. The Kings have a really good team (don't let the record with Quick and Cal in net take away from how good they are). But I don't see us getting past Colorado nor whatever stacked team comes out of the east.

I hope this trade works and the Kings have an extended playoff run. But I think Blake cheaped out rather than getting a more-long term package. I agree with Dom's writeup in the Athletic "NHL trade grades: Did the Kings get the wrong defenseman in Vladislav Gavrikov?"
That’s not someone worth targeting, not for a package that includes a first-round pick. It feels like a cop-out, a move to make for the sake of it because the Kings were too cowardly to actually swing for the fences for an actual difference-maker. If the Kings want to be patient and methodical and wait for Clarke to be a difference-maker — that’s great. If they want to take a swing with their current core and add Chychrun that’s great too. This feels like an in-between move that keeps them in between the league’s actually great teams and the just okay ones. First-round fodder.

Has Quick made any sort of statement or been interviewed about the trade yet?

I think his is the only opinion that has weight and validity at this point.

Very sad to see him go. Loved everything he brought to the ice. Loved him being a King.

On the other side of the event, Korpisalo is a good acquisition. I would think he will jump at the chance to become a clear #1 for the Kings.

And I have to believe the Kings have an agreement in principal to re-sign Gavrikov if he performs well and wants to stay in L.A. next year.

It's a rough business, but at least this didn't happen at the beginning of a season and turn Quickie's family life upside down. He will only have to spend 5/6 weeks in Columbus before deciding his future.

Thank you for all you gave us and the game of hockey, #32 !

4th in the conference, behind 1st by 0.2%. In other words the #1 team is 2 losses away from having the same pt % as the Kings.

I know the Kings would be underdogs if the playoffs started today. But not as big underdogs as they were in 2012. "They have no chance" is a very shortsighted take.

A few posters here are throwing fits because Rob Blake woke up yesterday, and based on a whim and the colour of his morning stool, decided to disgrace and humiliate a popular King player.

Folks, this was decided by the entire upper echelon of the King's organization. I'm sure it was discussed ad nauseam for quite a few weeks, if not months, because, you know, they're looking to do all that they can to upgrade the team, which, you know, is in their job description. (Of course, some folks here feel it's in their own job description to trash Blake, Robitaille, et al. every chance that they get.)

Sports is a business. Loyalty is NOT a business. Every playoff game which is played at Crypto is money in the bank, and money allows the team to continue into the future. Please, folks, take off the blinders and put on the long-range glasses.

Definitely conflicted in emotion, but that mentality is exactly what got DL in trouble and CLOSED the window on a franchise destined for greatness, but for the emotional romanticism of DL. While Blake may have pissed some people off with this move, the logical and rational thing to do was improve 2 positions that are deficiencies and costing the Kings points and abilities to win games.

He did what a GM is supposed to do, check emotion at the door and make the right call at the right time. Whether the 1st included was the right thing to do can be questioned but the fact he was willing to make the hard decision with a player that would spark this kind of emotion was an important step. Every GM has their share of mistakes, but as time goes a long, if the Korp can solidify as a long term #1 , this will look genius...time will tell.

According to all reports Quick didn’t see it coming. That sucks.
Apparently he told the team he wanted to keep playing beyond this season and it was pretty clear the Kings weren't going to renew his contract. So he was going to play somewhere else next season anyway. So now I don't understand why he was surprised or upset.
