Call it hockey IQ, or situational awareness, whatever you prefer, but Kevin Fiala has to be one of the worst NHL’ers I’ve ever seen in this respect, as far as -talented- players are concerned. The evidence? His gaff with the line change and not realizing he needed to cover for a cheating defender, making a little move at the attacking blue line to put his teammates off side, trying to feather a pass through a defender when he should be dumping it in, blazing a pass to a teammate when he should feather it, those Durzi-like cross ice passes along the blue line on the PP.. the list goes on and on.
At this point, I’m really starting to believe that the benefits do not outweigh the liabilities. In a perfect world, I’d certainly rather we had another Kempe dollar for dollar, but given the fact that Kempe is probably worth far more than his actual cap hit, I’d even take another Warren Foegele in place of Fiala.
As I’m typing this, I look up to see Fiala bobble the puck that fortuitously bounced into his feet, right in front of the opposing goalie, and he should’ve just burned that on net, rather than try to make some fancy play. Seriously, this guy is a black hole in terms of hockey awareness
