***LA Kings vs. New York Islanders GDT 3/11/25 7:30pm on FanDuel

Great game to watch. To be honest their power play, I know they didn't score x 8, but it looked dangerous, decent passing and movement. Kings PK and DK were just better last night. Byfield is turning into a bigger version of Kempe. Even Kopitar looked energized. Kuemper's best game. Kings will need to be at the top of their game for the rampaging Capitals. Ovechkin sure, but they have many other weapons.

That was not the type of game I expected to see between the Kings and the Isles.

That was also not the final score I expected to see, after actually watching this game between the Kings and the Isles…

If you watched the edge tool on the replay of his shot, he actually accelerated into the shot. I've not watched enough of the data to know if that's usual or not (or an artifact of the chip accelerating due to his movement and his location), but it didn't seem intuitive as a result.
I know everyone wishes Byfield were already a finished product but we’re still seeing flashes of how unique of a player he is and will be. The mix of speed, size, skill, work ethic and now shot is special. He’s finally doing everything at the NHL level that he was doing in the OHL.

He’s playing in a system that’s 22nd in the league in scoring. 28th ranked Power Play. It’s one of the most rigid and least creative environments for an offensive player in the league. Yet he’s at nearly a point per game pace for the last 18 (6g 11a) games. And if he shoots more those stats will keep going up.

Also regarding Kuzmenko, I was very enthused about his first game with the kings, although his second and third game have started to diminish my enthusiasm. I think he is probably at his best when he receives a slick pass and makes a quick move to the net or pull and drag wrist shot for a goal. I would suspect that’s how he scored 39, riding shotgun with Elias in Vancouver his first season.

Much like Kevin Fiala, who is at his best when he receives the puck and makes a nifty move to the net, or his patented pull and drag wrist shot to the top corner. He is at his worst when he tries something creative like an East West play to feed a teammate, which typically ends in a disastrous turnover and prime scoring opportunity for the opposition.

Summation, I don’t think either of these two players should be carrying and distributing the puck in danger areas like the neutral zone or at the opposition blue line. Absolutely no cute east west bullshit plays, especially on a backhand. I want them down low deftly sweeping up trash onto goal, or ripping off pull drag wrist shots after direct feeds from Kempe, Kopitar, Clarke, etc.

100%. The 4-1 final hides just how much DK came up huge with critical saves. And then the 2 overturned goals, which were legit but are also more 60/40 calls than 100/0 calls, also make the margin look larger.

Kuemper was amazing last night.
I thought both no goal calls were completely legit. In both situations an Islander player contacted Kuemper in the crease and visibly moved DK out of a position in which to make a save. Great camera work made the decisions in the war room pretty cut and dry.

Defintiely one of the best...if not the best...games he's played this season.

Jeff Marek’s old show on Sportsnet is now The Fan (terrible name) and features Mike Futa. He references the Kings all the time which is cool, and often the Cup years when talking about contending teams now. He is mostly fair, also.

He said the Islanders “got handled” by the Kings. It’s the first time I’ve heard him that far off.

He also had a brutal schedule to step into - so, fatigue was probably a factor.

Resurrecting this one from the graveyard due to the goaltender interference dispute in the Isles/ Blue Jackets game. I’m sure the fuse was already primed from their game against us earlier a couple weeks ago, but this certainly had to pop the top. Two challenges against isles goals, the first of which was ultimately called a good goal. The second was an extremely nitpicky call against them, on what would have been the go ahead game winner with ten seconds left. Isles went on to lose in the shootout, and missed out on a crucial point in the standings. Ouch.
