Last Movie Watched

I saw The Gambler on Christmas, mostly because it was the only movie that someone in the family did not veto. Last year, this technique got us The Wolf Of Wall Street. This year, it did not pay off so well. There was no point to the movie, other than for John Goodman to just own every shot he was in with his awesomeness and his obesity. I didn't care about the main character to the degree that I wanted to see him get murdered by the people he owed money to. Marky Mark did act well. There was a much more interesting movie about an English professor somewhere in there.

Adgy, The Big Sleep is only the greatest movie ever filmed in black and white that isn't about a newspaper tycoon.

Watched Jodorowsky's Dune. Great documentary. 9/10

Saw Under the Skin yesterday. Really odd scifi with ScarJo. Some great outdoor shots, but almost no background ended up making this kind of a head-scratcher. 6/10.

So, finally got to Cinefamily to see this yesterday. What furor, what uproar over something sooooooo insignificant. Lazy lazy movie where there is such potential for this to have been something more. I think Rogen/Goldberg are extremely capable, This is the End is a terrific movie that is a LOT smarter than it gets credit for. But this...a one joke premise that SouthParks the **** outta things by just hammering the same not-so-funny-anymore premises. Someone sticks something uncomfortable up their butt...Check. James Franco is borderline creepy with his is he gay or not vibe...Check. Seth Rogen gets laughs by showing just how doughy he is...Check and Double Check. This is actually a far more embarrassing testament to our culture than North Korea. Rogen survives this...he isn't bad, but he ain't exactly busting out of his very tiny box either. Franco is borderline unwatchable through MOST of the movie. Fawning, smarmy but with noooooooo balance. Unlikeable to the heights of his ability. The guy who plays Kim Jong Un does a nice job actually humanizing him, but that all gets abandoned in a really awkward way. The movie is tonally all over the place too. What starts as comedy gets horribly violent and it just feels sooooo jarring. Really, this movie is a hot mess. Not a great way to start the movie season of 2015, so I will compartmentalize this into 2014 and try again.

I kinda figured it to be the case with The Interview. It being pulled is probably the best thing that could ever happen to the movie.

The Machine
Some research program is trying to make AI assassins. A decent, if not entirely original first half about an AI that's self aware and trying to figure out its place. It didn't become bad until the action scenes started. Yeesh.

Predestination
Kinda cool, about a time traveling agent that's trying to find a bomber. Some nice twists, turns and loops makes this quite enjoyable even though it doesn't quite stick the landing it kept me interested.

In the Name of the Father
If the story wasn't based on reality and DDL wasn't such a force I'm not sure how good the movie really would be... but both those things makes it really good.

The Hobbit 3
Wrote a longer review in the Directors thread but the short version is fantasy battles good, story weak. Probably the most entertaining of the trilogy simply by having lots of action.
6+/10

Gone Girl
I liked it, it's well made and keeps things moving even though it's a bit long. Some things are pretty damn far fetched and some consistency issues with some characters but whatever, the big picture is strong enough to carry the movie.
7+/10

The Drop
It's a solid movie about corruption, gangsters and all that good stuff. Kind of low key but in a good way, Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini are as good as you hope.
7/10

Fury
Been waiting to see a good tank movie for a while and this is a dirty, gritty and gory one that almost was great. Almost. I have nothing against Brad Pitt, he does a fine job in many movies but unfortunately this wasn't one of them. The rest were great. But what really cheapens the movie is the ridiculous third act. It was quite good until that point and had they just given it an ounce of realism it would have been enough. Instead we got the tank equivalent of Arnold storming the mansion in Commando. I mean not really but might as well have been. Still worth a watch though.

Trying for a movie a day until I get my new job. :)

Jan 1st: Sexdrive, just because I was watching Silicon Valley marathon on HBO and Amanda Crew was it in. Still decent for being over 6 years old now.

Jan 2: Enemy. Goes straight on my WTF BD shelf. Movie is 1.5 hrs. Spent over an hour reading examinations about the movie. Will be placed beside stuff like Stoker, and utter crap like Spring Breakers.

Sex Drive...love that movie.

Today was: These Final Hours. Australia apocalypse film I picked up a few days ago, which just came out up here on BD. Just under 90 mins, but a pretty decent film. 4/5.

Funniest thing ever are the constantly screwed up subtitles... because of their accents.

Saw Imitation Game today. Learned about Turing while getting my degree, but it still made for an extremely good movie.

Well, after hearing a LOT. I plunked down and watched. First off...Kiwi/NZ flick so, Peter Jackson-ish. But Frighteners PJ. You know...totally odd tone, but minus the gooey bits, almost a Disney flick. A little too long and prone to subjecting you to advanced leaps of faith...but a fun little surprise nonetheless.

Wanted to see this in theater, missed my window. I liked Adam Wingard's You're Next despite him being part of the V/H/S-talentless Ti West circle...and I dug this too. The guy from Downton Abbey Dan Stephens(?) should be a huge star. He makes this little tapdance of 'what the hell is really going on here' work. When the reveal is sprung, it doesn't totally pay off...but the first 2 3rds of the thing is sooooooo compelling, you shouldn't care. It has a nice final ending...may sour the deal for a few of you types who put sooooooooooo much in the destination and not the journey. But you should check this out regardless.

Ride In The Whirlwind - One of those slow, atmospheric westerns that's short on action and big on mood. I liked it well enough, but I'm not entirely sure why it seems so popular with the Cult Classic crowd.

Rasputin, The Mad Monk - Ranks right up next to The Wicker Man for my favorite Christopher Lee performance to date. He's ****ing bonkers and perfect. The movie itself is Hammer-type fun and should appeal to fans of the genre, but if you're into Lee this is a must watch.

A movie reminiscent of the Coens' work, yet very original. Tight, and taut, at only 90 minutes there is no filler here. Terrific direction, cinematography and performances. I knew nothing of it other than it was supposed to be grteat, and I was not disappointed. Do yourself a favor, don't read anything about it, just take the 90 minutes and see it. It's on Netflix.

I'm not seeing the pic...what movie are we talking 'bout?

Saw Birdman today. Loved it. Deserves some awards.

Also saw Inherent Vice. Yikes. Made it through the entire 2.5 hours with only one other guy remaining in the theater. Everyone else left.
