just rented the dvd and i really enjoyed this one. it's 18 shorts done by various directors (the coen brothers, wes craven, gus van sant, etc.) and featuring the likes of natalie portman, nick nolte, steve buscemi, maggy gyllenhaal and juliette binoche. each short is based in a different arrondisement/quartier (neighborhood) of paris.
i loved it because it made me nostalgic for my favorite city in the world. the coen bros. short featuring buscemi was the funniest one. some of them were kind of weird in a quirky sense, but the movie as a whole was produced by the same guy who put out Am?lie, so that's not entirely surprising.
You know...I get the ending and understand why it was done the way that it was but I still can't shake the feeling that it ruined what was a great movie. Also, Tommy Lee Jones' character was unnecessary. Probably the most unnecessary movie character I have ever come across. This movie went from 5 stars to about 3 stars in about 10 minutes for me.
I disagree with pretty much everything in this post.
*SPOILERS*
The character of Ed Tom Bell was absolutely pivotal to the theme of the movie. In his visit to Ellis towards the end of the film, Ellis tells him "You can?t stop what?s coming. It ain?t all waiting on you. That?s vanity." That's the message Cormac McCarthy and the Coen Brothers were conveying - sometimes, the forces of good just can't prevent what's coming. A harsh realization that Bell gradually comes to realize, and this brutal truth is summed up in the closing lines "And then I woke up."
