Anyone else ever wonder how a movie about prostitution and possibly sex with minors got made?

Basically, Knocked Up some 40 years before Knocked Up. It takes some giant balls to make a movie in 1964 about a one night stand that results in a pregnancy, where the first act involves the two looking for a "doctor" for a back alley abortion. A good movie. Doesn't get too heavy, has some good laughs. The relationship builds nicely.

Thought it was ok. I had no idea it was a Korean movie. Great legend.

just rented the dvd and i really enjoyed this one. it's 18 shorts done by various directors (the coen brothers, wes craven, gus van sant, etc.) and featuring the likes of natalie portman, nick nolte, steve buscemi, maggy gyllenhaal and juliette binoche. each short is based in a different arrondisement/quartier (neighborhood) of paris.

i loved it because it made me nostalgic for my favorite city in the world. the coen bros. short featuring buscemi was the funniest one. some of them were kind of weird in a quirky sense, but the movie as a whole was produced by the same guy who put out Am?lie, so that's not entirely surprising.

The Coen Bros short was one of my favorites also. I think that Alfonso Cuaron's short w/ Nick Nolte was my favorite. I enjoyed Paris, je t'aime as well. :)

Recent movies I've seen...

Juno twice. That movie ****in rocks.

No Country for Old Men... missed the end because I got an emergency phone call. Damn it.

Sweeney Todd.

You know...I get the ending and understand why it was done the way that it was but I still can't shake the feeling that it ruined what was a great movie. Also, Tommy Lee Jones' character was unnecessary. Probably the most unnecessary movie character I have ever come across. This movie went from 5 stars to about 3 stars in about 10 minutes for me.

I was underwhelmed. Waitress is one of those movies that you might watch on a night where there isn't anything else on cable, so you watch it and think it's a cute movie. There really wasn't anything dynamic about it. Keri Russell did a good job, but I don't think it was an Oscar-worthy performance like the many other who feel that she was snubbed.

I disagree with pretty much everything in this post.

*SPOILERS*

The character of Ed Tom Bell was absolutely pivotal to the theme of the movie. In his visit to Ellis towards the end of the film, Ellis tells him "You can?t stop what?s coming. It ain?t all waiting on you. That?s vanity." That's the message Cormac McCarthy and the Coen Brothers were conveying - sometimes, the forces of good just can't prevent what's coming. A harsh realization that Bell gradually comes to realize, and this brutal truth is summed up in the closing lines "And then I woke up."

Personally I thought that the idea that you can't stop what's coming and "evil sometimes prevails" was driven home by Chiguhr's sheer arrogance. He killed with out conscience in an eerily calm manner. He revisited a crime scene to kill Carson Wells. I brazenly walked around with a high powered assault rifle. Irony on the silencer by the way.....look at my big ass gun but don't listen to it. Nobody could do **** to stop the guy.

Don't get me wrong the first 100 minutes were spectacular. However the ending just ruined it. If the idea that evil sometimes wins was symbolized by Chiguhr getting away then why did he have that car accident? Dude had a compound fracture. How the heck can he get away cleanly if he will have no choice but to go to the hospital. It was just weird. Overall I still give it a 4 star rating but I just think they really screwed the pooch at the end.

Thanks for the p.o.v on Tom Bell. I'll pay closer attention to the guy next time I watch the movie.

*more spoilers*

I think the accident at the end was another obstacle that Chigurh overcame. I mean, he was shot by Llewellyn, pursued by Sheriff Bell and Wells the bounty hunter, and involved in an unexpected car wreck, but still pressed on. Nothing, not even a random act of chance, could stop him. That's something Bell was forced to accept at the end, that there wasn't anything he could do to stop the evil force. Makes it very fitting that Chigurh's character survived.
