THIS WAS OUTSTANDING. From 2005--and nominated for an Academy Award. Yes, I'm WAAAY behind, but glad I finally came across it.

A firsthand account of the last 12 days before the fall of Berlin and the Nazi's, as told by combined memoirs of Hitler's surviving secretary, officers, and others in his bunker during those final days. This pre-dated Valkyrie by a few years, and though the films told the story from two very different sides, Downfall as a movie was vastly superior in every way imaginable. German language (as Valkyrie should've been), and Bruno Ganz was brilliant as Hitler. It's also clear that Valkyrie borrowed much from it in terms of sets, costumes, and even actors. It was long (the extended cut sent by Netflix), compelling, chilling, and brutal as one would imagine. But very highly recommended as pure cinema, and a must-see for anyone with interest in this period.

I still haven't seen this because I am lame. :(

IMO, downfall is the best war film out there. The guythat played Hitler apparently had him to a tee and it was nice to finally get a balnced view of those last days.

A fan of this era in music history, I enjoyed this odd mockumentary of Factory Records and the Manchester scene of the late 70's-early 80's. Steve Coogan was SO EXCELLENT as Tony Wilson. But..... that birdface mother****er that played Ian Curtis bugged the hell outta me SO FRIGGIN BAD, he almost ruined it. And as cold as it sounds, I was hugely relieved that Ian's suicide came barely half way through so I didn't have to keep looking away from the screen when he came on. Sorry, Ian, but whoever cast the film did you a HUGE injustice. The guy from Control was 10,000X better.

As usual.... don't know what took me so long to see this. :der:

Watched Whip It with Adgy yesterday. I think I was expecting something more from this movie. Maybe like Dodgeball on roller skates or something. I was pretty disappointed. To me it was like something out of "Lifetime: TV for Women" with the whole "my mother doesn't understand me and I don't wanna be a beauty pageant contestant" plot line.

I wanted more chicks beating the crap out of each other and less mushy emotional stuff.

Is it just me or is Ellen Page becoming the female Michael Cera?

You know, I was thinking about this yesterday. I wasn't really floored by her performance in Whip It. She didn't suck by any means, but I kinda felt she was slightly Juno-ish.

I really hope that she doesn't go down the "Michael Cera" route (who, btw, better not **** up Scott Pilgrim...). I haven't seen all of her movies so I don't know if she really plays the same character everytime. I thought she was great in Hard Candy. Here's to hoping she doesn't get type casted in future movies...

I liked it, but generally agree with your points. I do kind of wish that Ellen hadn't dropped out of Drag Me To Hell for this movie, though.

This is coming from a big Ellen Page fan, but I think she's already shown herself to be at least slightly more... diverse (?). Can't think of the right word. Movies like Hard Candy or An American Crime are a fairly decent departure from her normal character, although I'm sure she'll generally stick to the intelligent, sorta "weird" girl roles. What else is there for her?

Anyway, thought the movie was fun, but no more than that.

Saw Whip It yesterday, and I thought it was fantastic. Good story. Funny and serious where it needed to be. It should roll into my Top 10 list for this year.

Watched Couples Retreat today. Decent flick. Thought it would be funnier. Trailer versus Actual Movie felt like a bait-and-switch though. I guess those Favreau/Davis clips are on the cutting-room floor?
