Last Movie Watched

Watched Insurgent in 3D at home last night and it was decent. If you liked the first one then you will like this one too. Even with the high school dialog at times. A solid 7/10 but the 3D while OK, was only really noticeable in the final 45 mins.

Was pleasantly surprised by this. Good action movie with minor political message by Mr. Penn. Not his biggest fan outside of the box office but this guy is still a very, very good actor. And our favorite "next" James Bond has a very nice cameo. The female lead is very good and great to look at as well. Would recommend.

Watched Dumb and Dumber To yesterday. All the good stuff was in the trailers. Literally 2 new laughs, so a 2/5 for that one.

Saw This is Where I Leave You this morning. It was quite good. Solid acting all around. 4/5.

And finally, watched John Wick tonight. So good! Like Taken but... good. :) 4.5/5

The Look of Silence

This documentary by Joshua Oppenheimer is the follow-up to The Act of Killing. Both movies deal with the present-day aftermath of the 1965–66 mass killings in Indonesia, in which an estimated 500,000–1,000,000 were eradicated following a military coup under the banner of eradicating communism. However, they are vastly different, and both excellent, movies.

The Look of Silence follows an optometrist whose brother was murdered during the mass atrocities as he confronts the killers. This is probably the more relatable audience perspective, and it leads to a much more conventional format than The Act of Killing, which was largely told by the killers themselves. Over the course of the last 50 years, the victims and killers have been compelled to suppress the past in order to be able to live side by side, so these can be some uncomfortable confrontations, full of varied human reactions.

I'd recommend seeing The Act of Killing first, because IMO there are some details about the atrocities that are covered in that film that are helpful to know in The Look of Silence; and also because The Act of Killing is one of the most unique and disturbing documentaries of all time.

Shoulda posted this sooner...

This was a pretty decent little indy flick getting more notice because the director is being handed the keys to Spiderman for the next pointless reboot. First off, this movie is a snapshot, meaning stuff happens before and stuff happens after, but they are only concerned with what happpens in the timeline of the movie. So if you have issues with everything not being all tidy and explained, you may not like this. The ending particularly. I get the Coen Brothers comparisons, but only if you are comparing it to really raw, young CB stuff. It's not polished enough for the awkward moments to have that weird sense of humor their stuff has. Ok, so 2 preteen runaways steal a cop's car while he is dragging a body off to bury. That's the gist of it. Well, that, and him trying to get the car back, along with the not so dead guy in the trunk. Bacon is great in a sweaty/twitchy way, the kids are both good too. Shea Wigham(Nucky's Brother Eli on Boardwalk) is also good as the not so dead guy. There are some moments of pure cringe worthy wtf were the kids thinking that are actually kind of refreshing. It's not sanitized, these kids are **** ups, and they do some dumbass stuff that really isn't funny. But then again, it kinda is. Not bad for a first time director. Hopefully he won't get Tranked.

Watched Red Army last night. It was decent but... lacking depth for what is supposed to be a documentary. Should've been subtitled 'The Slava Fetisov story'.

Saw The Gift today. It was pretty good. Definitely something different than your usual summer fare. 9/10.

Pretty decent but was easy to figure out relatively fast, although the ending wasnt.

The CGI was top notch though.

7.5 out of 10.

Wow. What a perfect representation and condemnation of movies made in this era. Something Borrowed(er old) something new(Cavill/Hammer/Vikanders) CHECK

Summer tentpole, with a half baked script, formerly great director, and whatever names are considered big at the moment. CHECK

And just good enough, and instantly forgettable enough to be fondly enough remembered for roman numerals added on to the title. SOOOOOOOO CHECK.

Nice work between Hammer/Cavill, but Cavill is playing a caricature while Hammer(surprisingly) seems to be trying to act. But they have a nice chemistry. Vikkander is barely there. The chick that plays the barely sketched villainess( wow, seriously...other than them being Nazi simps...there really was no introduction to their motivations) chewed up scenery like she was in a better movie...like Hudson Hawk.

And yet, **** ME...it was enjoyable enough that I can't say it sucked out loud

Watched Hot Tub Time Machine 2 last night. Such a disappointment after the first one, which might've been one of the best comedies the year it was released. Yeah, it's interesting to see the guys again, but the script was horrible or too ad-libbed. 2/5 stars.

That comparison on the poster is sooo valid. I had read a lot of best of 2015 so far lists that had this movie on it so I decided to check it out. And man, was that a good decision. Free on Amazon Prime, I will not get into spoilers because this movie DEPENDS on you not knowing. Small, obviously indy flick, but it's soooooo perfect. GREAT acting by the leads and some terrific teasing PRACTICAL (mostly) fx, but the story is the thing. So slight, yet so wonderfully done. If you are into movies that don't need to be loud and over the top to distract from the fact they have nothing at all to say, I cannot recommend this enough. This movie deserves to be seen.

EDIT: and then this

Hurm. Rose Leslie(Ygrit/GoT) and Harry Tredaway(Penny Dreadful) are two newlyweds honeymooning...when she starts acting...odd. I had heard this was worth seeing too. Not so much. First off, you never buy them as a couple. Both are acting through slightly off 'merican accents, and they have zero chemistry. Things start going wrong, but unlike the subtlety of Spring, it's too much too soon and the reveal is really kinda...meh. Disappointing.

Hurm, Spring is about courtship and young love...Honeymoon is about the perils of getting to really know someone...now I have to find some after the glow fades movie to complete the theme.

Thanks for the tip on Spring. Going to watch it tonight.

I caught Mr. Holmes yesterday. Really loved it. In terms of a recommend, it's one of those pictures where I think if the trailer suits you, the movie will as well and vice-versa. Also, the pace is even more languid than the trailer suggests. Ian McKellen, is, of course, wonderful in the titular role.
