Last Movie Watched

Went and saw Fracture on Saturday night. Pretty good movie, and Anthony Hopkins is as usual, very good.

Children of Men and Curse of the Golden Flower.

One was okay. The other was underwhelming.

Spiderman 3. What a terrible, terrible movie. Should have been call "Peter Parker and his boring ass, cheese filled relationship problems (action not included)"

Wife rented RV from Netflix (she can't pick flicks worth a shiite). WORST MOVIE EVER!!!! It even had 2 actors from Arrested Development and the wife from Curb and it still sucked.

Watching Bobby right now.

Wifey and I saw the first showing of the "Hip Hop Project" in Irvine on Friday. It is a pretty interesting documentary about a project to get a recording studio and put out some positive hip hop to keep impressionable kids on the straight and narrow. It was well put together and easy to watch for a documentary. The music wasn't the greatest but they made it a secondary focus of the film with the people being the main story.

I should have known better...

Delta Farce...

It made Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector look like an Academy Award winning film...

Meiko Kaji in a Teruo Ishii film = WIN

darby: how dare you call Children of Men just "okay"

And all Chow Yun Fat movies are underwhelming.

And "American Graffiti" was showing a couple of times. I sort of find it depressing, though. It's proof that George Lucas can make a really good movie, and then he went and made a bunch of Star Wars crap. (Although I do suppose I should give him partial credit for the Indiana Jones trilogy)

I still can't believe it lost out to "The Sting" Damn you Robert Redford!

A) Notice, I didn't specify which movie was which.

B) The Sting is a great movie.

C) Ah, but Lucas had co-writers for American Graffiti. Not the case with the Star Wars prequels.

FINALLY:

Adgy, you wouldn't believe how much trouble I went through to track down this film. Or actually, you probably would.

I re-upped my Netflix for it. Then, found out that it's no longer available. Called countless distributors and retail outlets. The only place for sale on the net was the Amazon marketplace--mostly all used and overpriced (new was ridiculous)--but finally, visiting L.A. I found a copy at Amoeba (of course). They had 2 copies: the Red Sun release factory sealed in region 2 for ten bucks, or the original domestic release in mono (used) for 40. Oh yeah, they offered to order the criterion for me...

FOR $140 ****ING DOLLARS. That's a joke, right?

Since I'd never even SEEN it, I went for the Red Sun as Region isn't a problem for me (but $140 certainly is). Had cool 3-D menus, Dolby Digital sound, english subtitles and the original aspect ratio (I think), so what the hell.

I gotta say, it was well worth the wait and the trouble. My expectations were pretty high from everything you and Trant said, and sure it was dated by the music and fashion, but it was one seriously cool-ass flick. The gunplay was friggin AWESOME. Truly a guys film, with male-bonding firmly intact. It looked great, sounded great, and I'll watch it again at least a few times. Probably soon. Not flawless of course, but I can really see how it would become a cult classic. I'm stoked for it. Especially for 10 bucks.

Yes, CYF's character was bad-ass (with a BIG soft side) and definitely VERY cool, but seriously guys, I'm not sure he's cooler than Delon's Jeff in Le Samourai. That is just the epitome of cool. No heart, no words, no smile. Just ****ing cool. Different style I guess. Too bad they weren't of the same era. They coulda made a Jeff vs Jeff chasing each other across international borders. GOD how ****ing sweet would THAT have been?

Anyway, thanks for the recommendation. Really glad I got it.

Nope, no joke. That and the Criterion Hard-Boiled are out of print and super insanely expensive. Red Sun is a bootleg company, but their bootlegs are usually pretty good quality. If you feel like trying to find another copy of this, I recommend the Region 2 Hong Kong Legends release. It's excellent.

Well, thanks for listening to me. :)

I can't help but notice that adgy competely left out the part about Alain Delon being cooler than Chow Yun Fat. ;)

Because it was wrong. :nanana:

Anyone know if the Man With No Name box set is any good? Or would I be better off buying the DVDs separately?

It looks like only TGTBATU got multiple DVD releases, at least from what I can tell from a quick search.

They are releasing a box set in June to match the most recent special edition release of TGTBATU. It will have the three movies and "Duck, You Sucker!". All of the movies will be released individually, also.

Each film is a 2 disc-er.

Picked up my new A2 HD DVD player on Wednesday. I watched Children Of Men and Superman Returns on it last night. Children Of Men is bleak and dour but I liked it. Clive Owen was superb. Superman Returns tried really hard to capture the nostalgia of the original movie with Chris Reeve. It worked at times. But it felt pretty shallow for the most part.

The A2 player was awesome and the difference in pq between my old upconverting player and this one were substantial. Nice player and a decent price right now with $100 instant rebate from Toshiba.

Saw you at the Nordstroms at the Spectrum a few months back, but didn't have time to say hi!

I watched The Fountain, A Scanner Darkly, and Casino Royale this weekend. All were very good and interesting films.

The Fountain does not work on every level, but it does try for something different in the way it tells its story. There are some slow moments, but Hugh Jackman is very good and believable in his role and keeps the film moving along. The wife saw it with me the second time and she also liked it.

I was floored by the uniqueness of A Scanner Darkly. Had I known it was this good, I would have seen it much sooner. Like The Fountain, it doesn't work all the time. But when it does work, I'd have to say it's one of the better films I've seen recently. You have to stay with it to the end, but it has a great payoff.

Casino Royale was great. Guess I am a little behind seeing this one only now! But it rocked and I can't wait for the next installment with Craig as Bond.

Edit- my 1000th post... *sniff*...

I just watched Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny. Freaking hilarious. I highly recommend it. I won't go into a long missive about the plot because quite frankly it's a just a simple comedy but anyone that loves Rock will love this movie.
