Marner Watch

So.. Derian Hatcher and Scott Stevens via the way back machine, circa late 90’s? Those two should be able to dispatch the likes of McDavid and Draisaitl in a variety of ways.
Or a La McDavid on Mikey Anderson from 2024, and Nurse on QB in April of 2025.

Better yet, why not build our team just like Florida and watch those two be a -7 in the last 2 Games of a playoff series. That means spending the $14M per season on the best 3rd/4th line in hockey?

You’re preaching to the choir here. My comments about Hatcher and Stevens were not meant to be facetious. I would be absolutely ok with a 3rd and 4th line full of absolute most murderous hatchet men and rats in the league. Reading all these updates about how we actually had a deal in place for Marchand, but he didn’t waive for us, just breaks my wicked, blackened heart.

If he's not concerned with making top dollar, I'm assuming a no state income tax state would be a draw. If he goes to Vegas, he's not going for quality of life. He's going where he thinks he has the best chance to win. Otherwise, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Palos Verdes...all those easily win out over Vegas as far as quality of life.
Most likely. I had a friend who grew up in LA and ended up on a pro team in Vegas. Having lived in several cities/states, due trade/FA signings during his career, he said living in Henderson has been his absolute favorite.

I've never lived there so really can't say, but apparently there is a pretty decent quality of life in the areas around Vegas where the athletes live.

My Aunt used to live in Henderson by the golf course, and from her house you could see the sky line of Vegas. The players who live around the Henderson area don’t have to go into Vegas and away from the crowds if they like to gamble. They can go to Green Valley Resort and Casino off of the 215,Sunset Staions Resort and Casino off of the 95 towards Laughlin, and the M Resort and Casino right before Vegas offf the 15.That could be a good selling point to Marner if he chooses to go to Vegas instead of LA.We shall see when the door opens for Free Agency on July 1st where Marner signs either a short term 2-3 year contract or a 7-8 year contract.

In surveys of NHL players of places where they would like to play, Vegas is consistently at the top. Winning, no state tax, good quality of life, no pressure like a Canadian market. It is perceived very favorably.

Vegas signing Marner seems to hinge on the theory that Pietrangelo (8.8M cap hit) will skip the next regular season and only suit up for the playoffs. We know the Oilers tried this with Evander Kane and now they’re being investigated by the NHL. It’ll be interesting to see how that’s resolved.

It looks like the loophole will be closed in the next CBA (Sept. 2026).

Cost of living was very reasonable in Henderson at one time. I personally could never stand to live in Vegas during the summers. OK to visit, sit in a pool, have a drink...but that heat, oof. For a pro hockey player, there probably isn't much better than the ocean breeze in Hermosa or Manhattan.

Vegas has pulled this off almost annually. Why would next season be any different?

They have to change it in the CBA or it’s not gonna fly with the NHLPA

They usually don’t live there in the summer. Vegas from September to June, then home to their lake house in Toronto.

I actually forget that Dustin Penner was a second liner on the first Cup team. I remember him, just not like that. The D and Quick were elite and the forward group did what they needed to do. You think about what Maurice has done in FL and I’d argue Cassidy in Vegas when they won. Like I don’t see Bednar as being the driving force behind COL, which is fine, just some coaches are elite themselves.

2014 was truly the peak though, agreed. Doughty Muzzin Voynov Mitchell Martinez Regher. I don’t think we’ll ever see a Kings d corps that good ever again.
This makes me laugh considering I was literally the only poster on this board supporting Muzzin.

How many Kings players stay in LA all summer? Not many, is my guess.

They also don't have massive fires...

This board had several long debates about Doughty vs. Jack Johnson and Quick vs. Bernier. The fanbase has come a long way.
I don't remember the Doughty/Johnson debates perhaps because it was obvious DD was simply great right out of the box. I do remember getting reamed for suggesting Bernier's upside was career backup. I didn't think he was athletic enough and always being in position wasn't good enough because of his size deficiency. Anyone remember how he would get beat like a rented mule in shootouts?

Mike was acquired because he was a winner - and did so at every level. He was put on the team to teach the homegrown players how to win. To “take responsibility for winning “ as Lombardi loved to say. #10 soon became the conscience of the team. Every player had to look him in the eye right before taking to the ice. Brad Richards was very talented but not the kind of guy to push the Kings up the hill and over the top the way Mike, Stoll and Greene did. No Mike Richards = no Stanley Cups.
Richards got everyone’s jimmies rustlin’.

I think SLC will also be a much desired location in the future as well, mostly because of the family friendly lifestyle, skiing/snow boarding, central location, MTB, and not too hot or cold.

Henderson has a ton of retired military from the test site and Nellis. Lot's of the officers retire to that side. Plus there's a huge Mormon population, who for whatever reason are really good at city planning in deserts. They all get rich supplying the casino's with linens and junk. Summerlin is newer and fancier but Henderson is convenient living for access to the airport and the ability to get north without going on 15.

Penner really elevated his game for the playoffs (hence the nickname "Playoff Penner"). A couple of huge goals also, including the OT goal that knocked out the Coyotes in 2012 to put the Kings in the SCF, and his buzzer beater goal the following year against the Blues. His playoff performances redeemed what was initially a bad trade in 2011.
I remember both of those but I don’t remember much else that was positive. That could just be me. Playoff Penner rings a bell too. Last i heard of him he went by DJ Pendemic.

Well I will retroactively join you. He had his share of poorly timed penalties and coughing up the puck. A little Durzi-ish. But he was tough and made it hard to enter the Kings zone. Of course so did Willie and Scuderi/Regher. Then the skill of the puckmovers. Just an amazing D corps top to bottom.

Good thing hockey players always summer in their home towns. Or vacation. No player on Vegas or Florida spends more than a week or 2 of summer in Vegas or Florida.

And as an aside, the city you play in is basically irrelevant outside of financial implications like taxes. You are working (practice, travel, games...) 24/7. You basically just sleep in your mansion then summer in your hometown or in Europe somewhere. So you can see the tax free appeal.

To everyone that mentions how incredible Manhattan Beach is (and it is...) why does it really matter when all you do is sleep there, you can buy an equivalent mansion in Vegas or Florida for the half the price and no taxes...

The tax free issue really needs to be addressed. Not to mention the west coast travel burdens which are impossible to address. That much travel takes its toll. Private jet or not, it sucks.
