Official LA Kings Off-Season

True. But we can and must trade Durzi.

What other defenseman plays almost 20 minutes per game at 1.7 million and doesn't need sheltered minutes like Edler, Walker, and Spence? He will stand up for his teammates, can QB a PP, and isn't out of place in the top 4. Yeah, definitely need to trade him away.

SO what about the goalie situation...I don't think Koprisalo should be resigned...do we give Peterson another chance???

Maybe I’m alone here but I was actually wondering if the Fiala trade was too much and the wrong play by this org. First off - love Fiala, even with the frequent penalties. But what we gave up to have him on the third line when we lack size and toughness. I don’t know. Maybe if we had known Vilardi was going to finally break out we would have used the assets/money elsewhere.

Edit: and to be clear I loved the signing at the time. This is all 20/20 hindsight.

Before last night's game, Durzi was ranked third to last in effectiveness out of all players in the NHL playoffs.

Unfortunately, a number of other Kings players made the list.

On the most effective ranking, only Roy made the list.

Doughty isn't going anywhere and most want Clarke here next year (or Spence). Roy should definitely be re-signed. There isn't even a spot for Durzi. Plus, he stinks. I love his attitude, but he can't play defense on a successful team.

A first, which the Kings probably would have drafted a bust, and Brock Faber, whom some say would never have signed with the Kings, even though some reports say he was disappointed to have been traded. Fiala's production is the best we've seen in years. I definitely can do without the theatrics of him being weak on the skates, but he made his linemates better.

I think like most of you I’m okay with how the season went overall. Some growth etc. I’m a little annoyed hearing how fine management and coach are with it though. Feels like
Losing this series was a foregone conclusion in some ways. I don’t know, maybe I’m being a hypocrite but show me a little care here before patting yourselves on the back?

My biggest criticism was re-signing Edler. That move made no sense. With performance bonuses, he earned $1.5 million. There had to be a better option out there at that price.

Bjornfot will be here next year, but I'd look to add another depth LD even if we re-sign Gavrikov. No one special, just someone we can slot in when we need more physicality.

i dont want to take away anything from Durzi. I like his game, and as you mentioned, he's got some intangibles that the team could use. With that said, i've spent a decent amount of time going back and forth on whether he's the right fit here, and i think ive finally come to a point where i would probably trade him. It's not a simple, "he sucks, lets trade him". I like him. I like what he brings. I think he has room for improvement still. But...

Do i like him more than Doughty and Roy? Probably not. And we cannot move doughty. So that leaves Roy, who has established himself as a solid 2nd pair guy. So where does that leave Durzi, and the team? We need cap space. I also think that, despite the production, and the intangibles, i cannot simply ignore the reliability issues. I had also hoped to see him play much more assertive these playoffs, and that didn't happen. With both Spence looking for a spot (and probably being a cheaper option), and Clarke hopefully at least pushing for a roster spot, who do you keep? Durzi isnt a bad option, but given cap constraints and his poor defensive reads, i find myself strongly considering moving him. Im not saying the Kings do, but they have to be considering it. And just to maybe make a point here, they absolutely sheltered him on the 3rd pair. We've seen him play 2nd pair, and even first pair minutes in extreme situations, but he was definitely sheltered in the playoffs because he's a liability against strong opposition.

Do we definitely need to trade him away? No. Should we be considering it given the two prospects pushing for a spot, and the need for every bit of cap space we can get, and his defensive shortcomings? I think that's a yes. For me, it's about his role, and his overall contribution.

Faber sure looked good on the Wild. Just sayin'... But I love Fiala. I think he energizes what was a sleepy team.

Thank you. You summarized the thought process that was forming just before I read your post. If Clarke performs as expected, he brings far more skill on offense than Durzi. I would be very pleased if the coming season begins with Doughty, Roy and Clarke on the right side with Spence at #7 .

Rob needs to find a strong and reliable LD to replace Edler and protect Clarke as he learns the NHL game.

i wouldnt be surprised if Spence was given the leg up on a starting spot with the team, seeing Clarke more likely to start in Ontario, although i honestly am not going to try and predict what happens there. But one thing i do like about the possibility of Gavrikov and Roy is that you have the option of putting them together as a solid shutdown line, or split them up if you want more balance with three pairs. Like, it wouldnt be out the question to run gavrikov with a spence ro clark or durzi, and still run roy with bjornfot as situations call for it.

https://thehockeynews.com/news/report-kings-will-be-paying-mike-richards-settlement-until-2031-32

Buyout penalty, we have to pay until McDavid and Matthews are 35, which is 2032. $700,000 starting next season instead of $900,000 the past two seasons.

Yep. It's actually a settlement of Richard's claim that DL's termination of his contract violated the CBA and it counts against the cap. Here's what is left:

2023-24 $700,000
2024-25 $700,000
2025-26 $600,000
2026-27 $600,000
2027-28 $600,000
2028-29 $600,000
2029-30 $500,000
2030-31 $500,000
2031-32 $400,000

Easy money when you can get it.....

There are 2 ways to buld a winner: build a loaded superteam from the draft (which rarely works with salary cap anymore and you need to suck pretty badly or be very lucky) or build the *right* kind of team.

Which one did Boston just build?

Just read The Mayor’s interview with Blake. Sounds like he plans on keeping Clarke on the big club this time.

It hurts because we wasted assets for rentals. Don't overthink it.

We don't know that yet. Either one of them resigned means the Kings didn't waste the assets. Don't be so pessimistic.

I think that was a given. It makes no sense putting him in the AHL unless he struggles at the NHL level.
