Official LA Kings Off-Season

It is scary that they haven't announced the new plan yet, but there's no way they'll go without a TV broadcast. It's way to big of a market for either the Kings, or some station to let get away. As someone else said....I hope one of the standard stations make a deal with the Kings, and it's on a non-cable station. I have cable, but I know some people don't, and it sucks if they miss games because of it.
The PAC - 12 was going down this path of no announcement. Then, the PAC - 12 dissolved before our very eyes.

The owners love Bettman and why wouldn't they, he's made them a lot of money, BUT - it is time for the league to get someone who understands that this league is marketed terribly around the world. A team that won the Stanley Cup twice ten years ago shouldn't be struggling to find a TV provider. Living in Ottawa and watched them completely fumble situations with major celebrities being part owners of what has always been a lacklustre team in terms of marketability. This league may never be comparable to the major sports in America, but it needs to be in a position where its top stars are household names. How many non-hockey fans could even name McDavid?

It's funny I was just in the Adidas Store at The Century City Mall picking up some sneakers and I asked the really nice girl working there if they had any NHL merchandise as the store was littered with Messi and other soccer related gear(I understand the popularity of soccer compared to hockey) and she said "why would we have that?" That's crazy that the league's jersey sponsor wouldn't have I don't know at least one say Kopitar shirt in there. I absolutely think the league needs someone to market toward the youth to make the sport semi popular with Gen Z and Millenials which I think the league overall sorely lacks under Bettman. He has made them money absolutely but I think there actually could be more revenue if they tapped into say popular Tik Tok(I hate Tok Tok but understand it's popularity with kids) with certain players and other stuff like that that kids say 15-30 gravitate to.

Hmm, kind of a side step to what you're saying but I did see two movie (trailers) that may be accomplishing this task with Formula 1 and Tennis. Teens/20-somethings(gamers for some reason) engage in sports themed movies and triumph, it's not the re-invention of the wheel but they knew what was coming...and invested in a place where those people exist/consume content.

And the few times I've been into The Adidas Store the last year on 3rd Street it was the same, not a hockey shirt in sight and even on the website you kind of have to scroll around to find anything hockey related. Thought the NHL was maybe learning their lesson I think 2 years ago with the Ovechkin/Backstrom commercial that seemed to be targeting a younger crowd but their marketing has and is behind the other 3 sports leagues and I'm very realistic with my expectations of what a good marketing program could do for the league overall.

Earl, I understand shopping in person can be a total let down but, 3rd Street Promenade? Right? Dude, it's for tourist, bored SM teens and guys who think singing on the street for a donation is a good idea. Even if we expanded it to all of CA, it's 85 plus degrees most days & hockey jerseys don't exactly breathe. It's a tough sell.

Moreover, I've absolutely talked/typed here about contraction of teams in like a haha dystopian future but honestly, it seems like in the next 3-5 years the NHL could lose 10 (maybe 15) teams and no one would notice. It might make a better product. So, am I the freakshow with 'the end is near' sign? sure, but I love to laugh and am fun at parties (lie). =)

I understand jerseys are a tough sell in the summer but you would think that they would at least have a Kopitar or Doughty shirt or at the minimum a hat/visor. I'm not expecting a Carl Grunstrom Mural in store but anything would be an improvement over nothing.

A Drive to Survive type show is the obvious vehicle to net some new exposure. It did wonders for F1 in America and UFC’s version essentially launched that league.

Pick a handful of players to follow like Matthew Tkachuk and Austin Matthews, star players with personalities who don’t mind the attention (which I guess also means Zegras, yuck).

Ha! Of course it is absolutely reasonable to want a store to carry T-shirts of Doughty or Kopitar and have had a similar experience this August (in a LA themed sports store) looking for a cute- possibly lilac- tank top (sun's out, guns out) with the logo on it. They laughed me out of the store, perhaps it's how I phrased the question. So here we are. =)

Aside: The Grundstrom mural sounds awesome, now, Lizzote would have pushed it over the top; Bankyesque even.

I would just think Adidas would at least have a Kings hat or something at The Century City location as that's a pretty locals not touristy crowd unlike The Promenade.

Next time Carl comes to The Comedy Store I'll float him the mural idea and I'll just finance it myself!

i have no idea what that last sentence means but, yes and I have thoughts on images used; personally, I see it as a mosaic. =)

This is where the Ryan Reynolds thing here in Ottawa was so ridiculous because he could have easily given you that TV (if that's still a thing) slash TikTok slash social media presence about a team that struggles to sell out, even when they're good. Our population is only about a mil, so it takes some work here too. So they may have gone to a higher bidder, but in the end, they reject long-term growth, which of course ultimately means more eyeballs, more cash etc.

Agreed, it's a real shame - I was hoping Reynolds, and his group's, bid would win but also would be very jealous of Ottawa if it did haha. He would have done wonders for the Senators, and NHL as a whole, in terms of exposure as he really knows how to market (which the NHL seems to be struggling at).

Carl and a few others come a few times a year to The Comedy Store where I perform.
Ah, mystery solved. Thanks for circling back Earl and hopefully both our merch problems are solved, seriously. And, moreover, PDL is the solution. Somehow? He's a cash cow right? Like stocking team jerseys in Century City mall and creating lilac tank tops in the women's section for the King's kind of juice. Totally. We got this.
