History Old Newspaper Kings Ads and Other Oddities Through The Years

April 18, 2001, down 3-0 with 5 minutes to go, goals by Scott Thomas, Jozef Stumpel and Bryan Smolinski put an over capacity crowd of 18,478 into a madhouse as the game is tied. It is the only time I think I nearly fainted at a sporting event. As "Anyway You Want It" plays over the Staples Center pa in the overtime intermission, I checked in with my friends and we just hoped we could get the overtime winner. Did not have to wait long, as Eric Belanger took an Ian Laperriere pass and roofed it on Chris Osgood to complete the Frenzy on Figueroa.

This is still my favorite hockey game ever.

Found this gem in the garage... As a kid, I thought I wanted to take notes on all the games in the 92-93 season. Made it 3 games.

I love this!! "Blake wasted a guy" (wish we knew what guy)

*puts old lady hat on* - see, this is what kids (& adults) should be doing during the breaks in the action!! Not being assaulted by noise, lights & music. Hockey went downhill when they stopped selling paper programs/giving out paper rosters!!

*takes off old lady hat - maybe*

The Bullfrogs actually played at the Pond before the ducks ever played there. Tickets were $5 and easily upgrade-able lol.

Yup...by a few months. A few friends and I shared a house in Costa Mesa. Some of us got a mini-plan for the "mighty" ducks first season, and a couple of us went to some Bullfrogs game first (in much better seats).

randomly found this today. got all the newspapers and towels in a closet. my house is littered with 2012 memorabilia, lol.

I have like 6 (empty) cases of the beer cans in my garage....in case anyone still wants some, I'm happy to part ways with a few. (also still have an unopened 6 pack of the 2014 ones!!)

And, yes, the rest of my house is pretty much a reminder that I'm living 10 years in the past.

The Kings host the Soviet Red Army on Dec 26, 1985, a sellout crowd of 16,005 see the Kings lose 5-2, with Marcel Dionne scoring both goals. It was 1-1 going into the 3rd, with the 2nd to last place Kings hanging in there until it blew wide open. The game was officiated by a Soviet ref (holy home cooking Batman!) that didn't call anything on the Soviets until the game was out of hand.

Also the players got to go to the beach, no trip to Disneyland, but they got to see the Oscar bait winner of the year "Out of Africa" in Westwood.

I think I started watching about a year or two before this at 8 or 9. I remember the Red Wings and Avalanche being "evil". When I was a few years older I'd write (by letter) a lot of teams in the league with players I thought were good, saying it was my birthday, asking for signed photos, etc.. I got.. a lot. The Avalanche however, sent me a signed picture of.. every damn player on the roster. I had Forsberg, Sakik, Roy, etc. My sister at some point (born 01) found my stash one day and drew smiley faces all over all of them in Sharpie when she was like 3 or 4, and they got lost/tossed over the years. A lot of teams sent me stuff, if not signed photos, then simply team photos. The *only* team that didn't send me sh*t was.. The Los Angeles Kings, lol. They knew it wasn't my birthday :(

I love all these old newspaper clippings shared but THIS one has really got me curious. Does anyone have any more details about this exhibition game? Someone posted the broadcast to youtube which is incredible but anything else I can find out about this matchup would be a real fun deep dive.

This makes me a bit sad considering the downfall of the L.A. Times Sports section. We'll never see coverage like this again. ☹️
