April 18, 2001, down 3-0 with 5 minutes to go, goals by Scott Thomas, Jozef Stumpel and Bryan Smolinski put an over capacity crowd of 18,478 into a madhouse as the game is tied. It is the only time I think I nearly fainted at a sporting event. As "Anyway You Want It" plays over the Staples Center pa in the overtime intermission, I checked in with my friends and we just hoped we could get the overtime winner. Did not have to wait long, as Eric Belanger took an Ian Laperriere pass and roofed it on Chris Osgood to complete the Frenzy on Figueroa.

Found this gem in the garage... As a kid, I thought I wanted to take notes on all the games in the 92-93 season. Made it 3 games.

I love all these old newspaper clippings shared but THIS one has really got me curious. Does anyone have any more details about this exhibition game? Someone posted the broadcast to youtube which is incredible but anything else I can find out about this matchup would be a real fun deep dive.View attachment 5211
The Kings host the Soviet Red Army on Dec 26, 1985, a sellout crowd of 16,005 see the Kings lose 5-2, with Marcel Dionne scoring both goals. It was 1-1 going into the 3rd, with the 2nd to last place Kings hanging in there until it blew wide open. The game was officiated by a Soviet ref (holy home cooking Batman!) that didn't call anything on the Soviets until the game was out of hand.
Also the players got to go to the beach, no trip to Disneyland, but they got to see the Oscar bait winner of the year "Out of Africa" in Westwood.
