Olympics 2026- lets go!

What party?

Ladies, Gentlemen, Mux, welcome-- this thread is for you. Are you an Olympic person? Does that annoy your friends and family? But feel compelled to comment all the same, I got you. Live posting hockey games? Yes. Commenting on skating costume design? Yes. Making a cute animal video into an Olympic post-- I'll allow it. Watched a truly Olympic moment --don't feel like crying alone? YEAH!

Aside: All our non-American posters*, feel like trolling about GB's skeleton dominance? do it. Canada's curling revenge for last Olympics? Yeah, guy...blow that up. Sweden's ski team choice of sauna in Milan being sub-par? Sure. Don't be shy, I'm inviting you, formally. =)

*thanks for giving us a chance, personally I would have given up on us as a country long ago, like the day Anthony Bourdain died (no disrespect-heart you tony) the guy knew what was coming(?)...anyway, all good vibes from this oddball. =)

As always, have fun.

I'm just here for the international Hockey. Hoping for some fantastic games.

That being said, I've always been a big fan of the olympic games and international competition in general. Downhill, figure skating, curling, speed skating, ski jumping...all fun.

Woohoo! It's my every 4 year "oh yeah, I forgot that was a sport" event!

USA! USA! USA!

Same, I found curling the same way, maybe Vancouver? It is one of those things that makes me calm (which I clearly crave). Anyway I ended up watching the last goal metal game (USA! USA!) at a sushi bar at lunch in West LA. They had no idea why I was freaking out. lol.

Hey McSorely Fan, is your squad going to bring it this year? Or...should we just go pick up our metals now?

These guys look like what I imagine a "new country" band is, but they're not, they're returning champs.

The Milan crowd cheering on their thirty-five year old Women's Olympic speed skater by singing "Volare" as she laces up. Beats the heavily favored Dutchie for MF gold. On. Home. Ice.

This is the kind of weird that I am living for. Congratulations, Italy.

it's opening ceremony
Mariah Carey

A disappointing choice of a singer, and uttery disappointing performance.

Other comments on the opening ceremony:
An appalling choice to use AI-created animation.

Here's a screencap of one of its moments:

What the hell?!

Italian team members were very disappointingly dressed. Sure, Armani deserved a tribute, but what was that? They looked like fascists.

Other than that, the opening ceremony was great and fun!

The downhill race was cra-zy. I think one of the skiers went flying 55m (180ft for the stubborn) far on the biggest jump. That's absolutely bonkers.

Yes hockey and anything else is whatever
but Lindsey Von going in the Olympic Downhill tomorrow at 41, six years removed from her last competition. Not quite 2 years removed from a partial titanium knee replacement in her right knee. 9 days removed from a training crash and suffering a full rupture of her left knee's ACL, including a bone bruise and meniscal damage. She hit the weight room like a mad woman to try to compensate for what's missing and did THIS yesterday.

I'm sorry but I don't buy the extent of the current injury. Whatever happened in the past and the fact she came back is absolutely mind boggling...but that she tore her ACL and had meniscus damage in her healthy knee 1 week ago and she's now too three downhill skier still? I don't buy it.

Looks like her knee WAS shot since a minor fall resulted in that.

Lindsey ruined one of the top Olympic events for the fans and mostly for other competitors. Medals will taste sour.

Narcissistic egotrip publicity stunt gone horribly wrong. But everyone will talk about this so maybe she will be satisfied regardless.

Maybe Donnie will give her a medal so all will be good in the World!

Dude, competitive skiing has been her life. She gave it one more kick at the can, and crashed out. Let it go.

Breezy wins gold!

Bullocks, when I heard about Ms. Vonn, narcissism was my first thought as well but did not want to "create a space" for people to crap on women, which this site is famous for (google it), still waiting for my complaint to be resolved- site owner. *ahem* And this is a happy place, hopefully. =)

But after reading Dnepro medical report post I thought: shades of Steve Yzerman the last two years as the Wings captain. Can't really complain about an injury or slack in the gym when your Captain is crippled from the waist down and outworking you. Leadership. And, Birdman's post about a lifetime of competitiveness does not die easy. Agreed.

It's probably a beautiful combination of all three points. And will add to the conversation this: in my head, the Team USA doctors every meeting with Lindsay were like Nemo's dad from "Finding Nemo"... You think you can do these things Lindsay, BUT YOU JUST CAN'T!

And @What party?

One thing is competitive skiing, completely another is risking your leg in a most likely futile attempt at the last hoorah at downhill skiing. Speeds of up to 150kph (90mph), huge jumps, immense forces on your legs...incredibly high stakes and incredibly high chances of something going horribly wrong.

She wasn't fit physically and she clearly wasn't fit mentally if she decided to go anyways, and it proved to be a big mistake.

I was rooting for her, but immediately changed my perspective when last week's injury happened and she said she'll go anyway. Foolish. I was even thinking about the reports of torn ligaments were overexaggerated so she'd have an excuse handy or she'd be an even bigger hero if she did win a medal, I'd never have thought a pro athlete with the best doctors would be so foolish to go at it 1 week after actually wrecking her knee ligaments.

It seems her knee was really well braced. So well she fell on the 3rd turn and broke her leg beneath the brace. Oh well, better than getting her lower leg turned 360 (which happened to a skier about 20 years ago, had to get his leg amputated).

Foolish, foolish, foolish.

Foolish, maybe. Brave? Absolutely.
