Phil Danault - Called in Sick against the Flames? Asked for a trade? UPDATE: TRADED

I'm still shocked that he had 0 goals/5 points in 30 games. Wow.
Phil was pacing himself.

On a side note, went to Charlotte Checkers game last night and saw Tobias Bjornfot playing for them but missed Akil Thomas from Springfield. Not sure why he wasn’t playing? Possibly got moved up to the Blues?

Did Toby still look scared of the play or is the AHL suiting him well?

Teams just do not announce that a player called in sick. I have never heard that and thought it was very odd. At the time I took it as a jab at Danault.

According to Pagnotta the Canes wanted Danault.

I probably would have taken Kotkaniemi over a 2nd round pick (mainly because we are so short on Centers). He's young (25) and still has some upside, plus that AAV should likely be easy to move a couple years from now (if needed). Possibly Carolina may have agreed to eat a portion of his AAV to move him.

Maybe Holland has a trade lined up?

You gotta think Holland is working the phones.
The real problem I see is that almost no player on the Kings roster has much value right now. Outside of Armia and Laffy and Mikey (please don’t trade Laffy) no one is playing well at all (and even those are debatable). I mean, what would Moore fetch at this point?
Outside of picks and maybe a prospect there isn’t much right now to trade for anything.
The hope for me is that the current players snap out of their collective funk but I have to admit that’s just wishful thinking.

Eh kinda, we still have plenty of players with trade value and obviously sold Danault while his value was low. Trade him around the trade deadline to a playoff team in need of a Center with experience and we would likely have gotten more, but if the attitude is poor it wouldn't be worth holding him that long.

I think Holland is playing "wait and see". If he thinks the team has a shot this year he likely goes for an aged vet like Schenn or O'Rielly (or possibly if the locker room has gone sour and he thinks the right vet can turn it around), if not perhaps he chooses to start going younger. As it stands, though, he is one Center injury away from panic and that is extra sad considering we have a coach whole only plays 3 lines.

The Canes fans hate Kotkaniemi, though, so might not have been an upgrade

Holland seems to have another Center in mind so adding Kotkaniemi would tie up cap space and a roster spot on a player that isn’t worth his salary.

Kotkaniemi has hardly done anything more than Danault this season. Earns only a little less money, too.

A high 2nd rounder is definitely more valuable.

Besides, maybe Canes were on his no-trade list, in which case of course he'd get traded to a team that was, for sure, on his list.

Would be a great place for Schenn - finishing his career where it started.
Schenn and O’Reilly have to be high on his list. Only problem is they’re high on every team who needs a Center’s list.

Holland will be paying a premium for a vet Center at the deadline or over the summer. No doubt about it.

Maybe he’ll have a sentimental attachment to the place where his NHL career began?
