Rookie ans Sr training camp dates?

You guys....Brandt Clarke is even better than we have been told. I'm at training camp, and he is amazing!!
Spence is looking great, too.

We've got my daughter's baby with us, so I haven't been able to watch as much as I would like,
so I'm not sure about how anyone else is looking.... That's how much Clarke stands out

During training camp or in any preseason games, who else wants to see Lizotte & Helenius on the same line?

I can't wait to see him based on your enthusiasm. And Spence is one of my favorite developments of recent years. I hope that kid turns into a name brand on our blue line, I just love his story and international journey.

Chromiak is the real deal. He's impressed me a lot this morning. I realize now that I also noticed him a lot yesterday when I had my granddaughter taking up half my attention, so he's definitely a keeper.

Byfield is skating less like a baby giraffe. He had some great plays in the scrimmage, with an excellent faceoff win that led to a goal by Sean Walker from the point that Quickie couldn't see through traffic.
Speaking of Walker.... He looks GREAT!! YAY!

I'm still ecstatic over Clarke. He skates with that "I'm just floating across the ice" style of Duncan Keith.

Biggest surprise is this Alan Quine dude - he's on an AHL contract, we got him from the VGK.... Surprised he's never gotten his NHL cup of coffee, but maybe he got derailed by Covid situations. He's already 29 years old.

Not sure Kopi with Fiala is going to be the best fit....Kopi is too slow for Fiala!!

And..Helenius is very tall (listed at 6'6")

Thanks for the camp updates, all! I'm definitely pumped for this year!

Go Kings Go, and screw what ANY analyst says, it holds no weight.

Isn't Brandt's skating "weird"? Doesn't he have poor technique/posture or something? Or did he fix that? Anyhow, it's great to see one of his biggest flaws isn't that much of a flaw.

Kopi with Fiala...yeah. Some of us have been saying that for quite long. I really hope the coaching team is just trying things out just in case and will then concede that Kopi is the best fit with Kaliyev and Iaffallo.

Kopi centering 2 of the fastest players in the league doesn’t make sense to me either. Turcotte would be a better choice if healthy.

Kopi and Iafallo belong together.

I was at camp yesterday (Friday). Her are my thoughts from the scrimmage:

Clarke looked good but looked like he's not NHL-ready. He belongs in the AHL and if he can't play there he should go back to the CHL based on what I saw.

Fagemo has a GREAT shot.

Walker is playing LD and looks really good there, although I suspect he's better at RD.

Lemieux and Quine were goofing on each other...that was funny.

Vilardi oozes talent. I just with he would play with the desperation of a guy who's on his last chance to make the Kings.

Byfield played like a kid still growing into his body who doesn't know what to do with his size.

Kempe played bigger than he is.

Petersen has work to do to be a #1 .

Chromiak looks like the next Kaliyev or Fagemo. He looks like a natural scorer.

Andersson looks like the perfect 14th forward.

Tynan was on the ice solo taking extra shots. He just loves being a hockey player.

Madden looks like the next Tynan.

Pinelli and Thomas look like a real prospects with some work to do.

Grans looks overmatched.

Jacob Doty's nickname should be "Brad".

I’ve been saying this in a few places, but I think Walker is going to surprise people this season. It’ll be his first real chance of playing on a good team and the guy is a great skater. Alec Martinez type for me

Spence reminds me of a Jared Spurgeon type, with similar ability.

Clarke looked awesome in the rookie tournament. I would not be surprised if the Kings try and give him that 10 game test run that doesn’t burn I contract year. If he were a left shot defender, I think they would be seriously considering letting him learn at the NHL level this year. As it stands, too many RD and I’m not sure he deserves to leapfrog Spence.

Chromiak seems like that type of winger who just knows how to float into space to find a shot.

Gabe Vilardi is our most talented forward, and if they don’t find a way to find him a spot, he’s going to end up being a top six guy somewhere else. On that note, peoples comments about Fiala not meshing with Kopitar simply follows suit to everything we’ve always said for the last decade. Kopitar might as well be out there by himself, since he never seems to click with high skill wingers. Not even joking, they should probably just roll him out there with Iafallo and Lizotte, to see what happens. Problem being we only have so much ice time, and you have to find a way to maximize those top six forward spots. I am loathe to even think of breaking up the Danault line from last year, but the coaching staff will have to take a hard honest look and assess whether they are truly the best second line we can ice this season. I certainly don’t know what the answer to that riddle is, but kempe, Fiala, kopitar, and Danault are paid like top six guys. Then arvidsson next, and Moore seems like the odd man out if they really try to shoe horn Vilardi in there somehow. Bottom line is, he’s got to take one of those top six spots from somebody though.

Edit: OK I think I just solved the riddle. Put Vilardi with Kopitar on the top line since they’re both slow playmakers, and Kopitar can be the defensive conscience that Gabe lacks. Kempe/kopitar can be the scorers for vilardi to feed. Then try Fiala in place of Moore to be an upgrade on that second line. Now stick Moore with Byfield and Iaffalo to kickstart those two into high gear. Then Kaliyev can try to wrestle away any of the RW slots above from Vilardi, Arvidsson, Iaffalo or play specialty minutes on the PP. It’s not perfect but we have a glut of forwards who will need a chance to shine, and not enough spots to go around.

I'm just going to add that I can't remember looking forward to a hockey season more than this one in a long time. Maybe since we drafted Doughty. With Covid finally mostly behind us, and the Kings emerging from the long dark rebuild tunnel, all these questions are the reasons we are fans.

Great thread guys, thanks to all the opinions and speculation. I love every word of it.

I think the Kopitar line will definitely surprise some people this season. I think he and Kempe have already shown they can play together, and i like Fiala's double threat ability to make plays and shoot. Kopitar can play high in the zone as F3 which suits him.

Sounds Like Fiala is excited about playing with Kopi:

"Fiala said rather abruptly that he’s never played with a center of Kopitar’s ability during his hockey career to date. While he’s been a part of some good teams in his career, and had some solid linemates he’s rarely been given the opportunity to play on a first line, with a future Hall of Famer skating alongside him. He’s produced nonetheless, despite ice time that’s fallen more in the realm of a second or third line player."

It's always interesting to me to see what happens when a player gets promoted to the top line and gets more minutes but now has to play against the opponents's top defenders and often highest skill Forwards (so he had more defensive responsibilities).

Let's face it, the big loss with this is that now we'll have to wait a whole year to hear one of the Kings announcers call the name "Fiddler-Schultz". I mean I REALLY want to see this guy make it just for that alone.

Well, first of all, saying he's excited with playing with a future HOF is expected. No way he says "well, I think he's too slow for my style". This doesn't mean the fit is optimal. We know the last year's line AI - AK - AK2 worked well, and AK2 should be at least one step forward in his development...

I understand they will try to start out with Fiala and Kopi together, but I expect Todd to experiment down the line.

PS: I just had an idea...how about these three lines, considering Arviddson will be out to start the season:
Fiala - Vilardi - Kempe
Iafallo - Danault - Moore
Byfield - Kopitar - Kaliyev

This way we will see whether Gabe has a future with the Kings...if he excels, great - you make room for him. If he doesn't, you trade him as there's really no space for a struggling prospect on the roster.

Byfield on Kopitar's wing can prove effective at keeping possession, and Kaliyev's only job would be to simply seek open space and shoot.

If all the youngsters in this top 9 prove themselves worthy, trade Iafallo to make room for Arvidsson and we're set. Lemieux-Lizotte-Grundstrom would be the 4th line of my choice.

They aren't giving Vilardi 1st line minutes, and Kopitar 3rd line. Byfield is slotted for C.

If they do anything involving Vilardi, i suspect something more like this:

Fiala - Kopitar - Kempe
Moore - Danault - Kaliyev/Vilardi
Iaffalo - Byfield - Kaliyev/Vilardi

Vilardi, if/when he draws in, is still going to have to prove himself on the fundamental parts of the game, and maybe draw into PP2.
