It also comes from what you want to do with the character.

The current movie franchise wants to make Superman more interesting by making him more like Batman.

The TV show wants to make Supergirl into what the Reeves Superman was: a person with tremendous power choosing to use it for good, and inspiring others in the process.

It also comes with the baggage that a character brings with them. Superman:Iconic character that even the non comic book reader is incredibly familiar with. Preconceived notions don't allow for much in the way of re-invention
Supergirl:Most people aren't even aware she exists. No baggage whatsoever. So, they go the Greatest American Hero route with her. Has enough comic book tie ins to ensure folks at least give it a chance...and it works.

Look, it's tv. Arrow and Flash are both successful too. But if you think that if they were movie versions, the showrunners would have had as big a margin of error, you are mistaken.

Superman, in his traditional role, is a policeman. What was the last movie about policemen that didn't look at it from the anti-hero/'gritty' angle? Paul Blart:Mall Cop? Because if you went the big blue schoolboy route...that's what he would be, except without all the bumbling and profuse sweating.

Or, on the other hand, you could make something like "Captain America: Winter Soldier," where the idealist fights against the current climate to do what's right, and, more importantly, while trying to do it in the right way.

I have yet to actually see it, but it seems to me that Cap'n America is just as motivated by the selfish reason that he wants to protect Bucky/The Winter Soldier from being held accountable for the many assassinations he performed. Yup...doing things the right way!!!!! Serve and volley...

Sorry...thought you said Civil War.

But there is a reason that Cap'n is treated like a goody goody in Ultron...because that bright blue schoolboy/policeman schtick is an anachronism.

But it's acknowledged in the franchise and the character still works.

As for Civil War, my assumption is that Cap's argument would be that Bucky was brainwashed when he committed those crimes, but that he's not anymore, so he should get some consideration when it comes to punishment. Others, like Stark, would take the opposing hard line on that position, arguing that the guy did it, one way or the other. And who's to say that, even if he were brainwashed, he wouldn't get activated again later somehow? And both sides have at least some measure of viability.

Come to think of it, I'm pretty convinced that if Superman were part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they would probably do a decent job updating him and still keeping him in the character's spirit. At least partially because they've made room in that universe for idealism. Something the DC universe doesn't seem to be doing.

Maybe...
But somehow, I can't help but think...that if Christopher Nolan was behind this...NOOOOOOOOOOBODY would say d_ck.

Dude, you have really got to get over this Nolan thing.

And that's aside from the question of what story he'd want to tell involving Superman.

Just got out from first showing. Critic proof. Fantastic! No spoilers.

Attaboy!!!!!!

Hey cgod, now were you pro or con in the months leading up? Won you over, or you went in thumbs hovering ?

Big DC Comics fan but I don't care much at all about hype or especially reviews, to judge anything before I see it for myself.

Even the 2 morons talking constantly beside me did not distract me enough... still felt like 2.5 hours flew-by. If you're not into something as escapism what's the point? :)

For me it was as basic as: various comics that I'd read over the past 2 decades were brought to life on-screen. DC Comics are not jokey versions from the 70s anymore.

Spoilers later, but I will say the extended cut should be something else.

Just saw it. At the risk of being told I'm biased and without giving any plot points away (below is a brief description of what I thought)...

I thought the first hour was decent. Had potential. Went downhill in a big way after that.

Concur. Also cements my belief that Zack Snyder is a terrible filmmaker.
