Tales from the beer league part 2

Can anyone help me figure out what size of a bag I should use for roller? Right now I'm using a duffel bag that is as long as my shin pads and as well as those, fits my helmet, gloves and elbows. I'm maxed out on space and I'm planning on getting a girdle and protective shirt also.

thanks!

I think you need to go full big bag, make sure it will fit in your transportation though.

no problem fitting it in the JKU! I think full size may be overkill though. I'm prob gonna go with 30-32".

thanks!

They let us have one guy fill in. They would've let us have two if we took the forfeit... We shoulda just forfeited for the extra man

If you are going lose because of not having enough players to fill normal positions then forfeit. Unless you absolutely know the game will be close.

Let the other teams ringers whine and cry about not being able to pad their stats.

I just use the same bag I use for ice. With wheels. Comes in handy sometimes. Hope that helps.

Same here. I just swap the appropriate gear.

So much this. I use different bags depending on which car I take. In my commuter, I use a Grit Tower bag. In my sports car, the tower bag takes up the entire front seat and barely allows the door to close, so I use an Akalai backpack bag.

I need to get another bag, almost brought my ice skates to a roller game! Speaking of roller, I am having people (and families)over on Sat for pickup and a SCF game watch. Still looking for a few more skaters. If you are interested in coming down south to Encinitas PM me. Pickup starts at 3:00.

We lost 3-1 yesterday but it felt like a victory to us! The team we played is full of 4th season "rookies", yeah, pretty comedy huh! First goal I gave up went off my blocker, then off the crossbar and landed in the crease behind me, I wasn't able to get to it before there guy who tapped it in. That was all for the first period, 2nd period was a 2 on 0, i got over in time but got beat 5-hole, 3rd goal was through traffic, I should have been further out, dropped down to butterfly, saw the puck come through the forest of legs, made a right pad save but was too deep and it bounced off my pad, then off the inside of the right post and in. 3rd period, no goals were given up.

Our team had a couple new players on it, both of which had experience and it made a WORLD of difference! For the first time (in 3 games) it actually felt like a game. The guys had some decent offensive zone possession and played their positions well. I didn't even care that we lost at all, I was more impressed with how well everyone played and the team morale was high as well.

Btw, anyone else go to the Ontario Reign gear sale yesterday?
Here is my haul, all for $33!
$25 for goalie cut practice jersey w/ socks
$.50 per roll of tape, x6
$1 per compression item, all brand new Warrior brand
$1 Ontario Reign puck:

Great haul ! I'm usually too short to find anything there for me. Lappy told me it was in Long Beach ?

damn you scored, i'm guessing the sale is over?
thanks, and yes. it ended yesterday at 5pm.

thanks man, lappy was correct, it was in LB, about 5 minutes from my pad! :)

Damn BeeDee nice score! That compression gear alone is well worth it.
thanks my friend, yup, my jaw hit the floor when they said each Warrior compression item was only $1!!!

got my first win in goal tonight, 5-2! Stopped 23 of 25 and the first one was a hack job after making the initial save...second goal went off of two skates at the left top of the crease and in. I probably should have been in the VH position and my downed right pad most likely would have stopped it. Oh well, to get our first win feels great! We have acquired a few new players with experience so it really levels out the playing field!

We lost 3-2 last night in a shootout. First goal I gave up was a result of a bad line change and then the puck was on its own between the blue line and myself, an opponent was rushing in, i did the "should i go, should i not go" for about 2 seconds, i decided to go and try to poke check it and the guy barely beat me to it and shot it in. :( The next goal was again a bad line change, led to a 2 on 0, guy beat me glove side, I did get a piece of it though. The same guy that scored on me was the first shooter in the SO, I tracked the puck well as he tried to dangle me to my right, got my right pad down and pushed with my left foot, blocker was down too, somehow the puck rolled on its side around my toe and in. :( I stuffed their next shooter and none of our players managed to get one in, all 3 shot it right at their goalie.

Our team did much better this time around, last time we lost 8-1 to them, but we only had 7 skaters. Playing goalie has been eye opening and has brought the frustration level to a new high. If you play beer league, please thank your goalie many times throughout the game, I'm finding it to be a thankless position. Unless you have played it, you have no idea how hard they bust their asses to keep the team in the game.

no game this weekend but we had a really lame "practice" with a "coach" and shared the ice with another team in our league. me and the other goalie didnt do squat for the first 25 minutes or so with the drills. we just worked on stuff together and then eventually got some action in drills. we then scrimmaged for 10 minutes and then did shootouts for another 10 minutes. as a goalie shootouts suck after about the 5th consecutive person goes. it is just non stop rookies coming in on you. i began to not care and was half assing it after 5 minutes.

on a lighter note i got new leg pads last week and today was my second time using them. Reebok P4 pro pad. i also put on a cheater cage a few days ago, i love it! the pads are dope but are much different than my old Vaughn V3 Velocity 7500's. these are 33+2 and have a double internal break with no outer break, a stiffer pad for sure! they have more thigh rise than my Vaughns did so that is going to take a few more sessions to get used to. i have a ccm500 glove and blocker on the way to match the pads. ccm and reebok are the same co. so in my eyes they match!

Jeebuz christos Beedee new pads already? I'm thinking the wife is gonna rethink this stance.

Couple of updates on the hockey front. Played for the first time in over a month last week due to travel and had a nice little low level game to get back into things. The next day half way through a bottle of wine one of my hockey buds called me about doing an iron man tourney. 6 skater rosters, 3 v 3 (cross ice) 20 minute run time with penalty shots for infractions at the end. 7 games (min) starting at 9pm with the championship scheduled for 530am. The bottle was a bad influence so I said sure why not.
First time I ever tried one of these tourneys and after a week of reflection I've decided you either show up kinda drunk and hydrate-dehydrate yourself through it or you take the thing way too seriously. There were two levels Beginner and Advanced. We played advanced and there were 5 other teams. The beginner level had 12 and I'd say 4 of the teams looked beginner level. The only bummer we had was one of our teams was Gold B level and was taking this thing way too seriously (our area goes to gold a). They were 2 of our 4 losses. The rest of the teams were even enough, one group of really good skaters brought a really rough goalie to even things out and it did. They were also having a lot of fun.
The operation wasn't super professional but it wasn't a complete **** show. By 3am nobody was going back to their lockers and everyone was hanging out on the 2 sheets and chatting up everyone between games. Our last game I hit the absolute hockey wall. I had seen other players kinda stop playing and all the sudden I knew why. The difference was I was willing to go sit on the bench where the other guys wanted their ice time and were just absolute pylons out there. Amazing job by all the goalies to put up with a night like this considering we had at least two one hour breaks between games. We got knocked out in the semi (where we would have had to play the same gold B team for championship) in what may have been a strategic 7-6 loss, or we were all just ****ing tired.
In all I think its definitely one of those things to put on a hockey bucket list, not so sure I'll do another but if I was invited I'd probably do it again.

Haha Jammer, the deal on these pads was way too good to pass up. Clearance, plus an additional 20% off made them a no-brainer. Most of the new model year gear is rolling in so I had to act fast as these were selling quickly! They are a pro level pad so they will last a looooong time, especially since I play 1-2 times a week tops.

That is rad about the ironman tourney! I have always wanted to do one as as skater, but now as a goalie it seems extra brutal! I know Lakewood does one, but not sure when. I couldn't begin to imagine how beat I would be the following day or two. Did they have temporary boards set up for the cross-ice orientation? What were the scores of some of the games? I know it is virtually possible to score from anywhere in the cross ice configuration if the goalie is caught off guard.
