Haha Jammer, the deal on these pads was way too good to pass up. Clearance, plus an additional 20% off made them a no-brainer. Most of the new model year gear is rolling in so I had to act fast as these were selling quickly! They are a pro level pad so they will last a looooong time, especially since I play 1-2 times a week tops.
That is rad about the ironman tourney! I have always wanted to do one as as skater, but now as a goalie it seems extra brutal! I know Lakewood does one, but not sure when. I couldn't begin to imagine how beat I would be the following day or two. Did they have temporary boards set up for the cross-ice orientation? What were the scores of some of the games? I know it is virtually possible to score from anywhere in the cross ice configuration if the goalie is caught off guard.
The scores were surprisingly not as high as you'd imagine. There's a little bit of etiquette or at least there was to ours. There's no face offs or whistles so most players don't crash the net too hard and passing plays drive the majority of play. If a puck was near the goalie most guys would take a single poke if at all. They used soft boards to cordon off the 2 end zones of the nhl sized rink and ran 2 games simultaneously on that one while the olympic rink they encroached on the end zones a tad and ran 3 games at a time. That was actually worse because teams had to change from the bench so one team had a long change. On the NHL side we were all just hopping over the soft boards and standing in the middle so you could change from everywhere.
We won 3 games 5-4, lost 7-4, 7-1 (gold team), ????-0 (gold team again) and then 7-6. I think 4 of our games had to have the penalties shot at the end to confirm a winner. I will add that roughs/checks/boards were all auto ejection penalties. Only hooks and whatnot counted for PS's at the end. This was meant to be a shinny style tournament so there was not a lot of grit going on. The strategy is clearly just the ability to make in tight 5 foot passes, there's no breakways here. Also because of where the boards are you can't cycle so its all tape to tape for the most part.
As a goalie I'm not sure what you'd want to do if you got caught in a bad game. The one where the gold team wouldn't let up it was in part because our goalie wouldn't quit. They wanted to break him. The shots that were going in were ridiculous 5 foot out roofed to the corner backhands, not that they weren't getting little chip and chop plays on us cuz we couldn't keep up, but they were picking corners to score.
