Netflix’s ‘Iron Fist’ Has Just Been Cast And A ‘Game Of Thrones’ Alum Scored The Gig
http://uproxx.com/gammasquad/iron-fist-finn-jones/

THANK YOU Marvel/Netflix for not succumbing to the pressure to retro race cast this character as an Asian. Thank you for maintaining the integrity of the source material. Maybe someone learned something from Deadpool after all.

Just as long as they ditch the collar...

I wonder how many people crying racism over Iron Fist were actually alive during the '70s?

I was. Granted, I was just a child, but Iron Fist was not the only character of his type. Seemed like everybody wanted to be Bruce Lee: Asian folk, Latino folk, white folk, black folk, every folk. I was never insulted by the imitators, because the truth is that as much as everybody wanted to be Bruce Lee, nobody every could, nobody ever will, even greats and legends like Jackie Chan. There are better actors than Bruce Lee, better martial artists even, but nobody ever again is going to set off the explosion that Bruce Lee ignited. Chuck Norris probably owes his career to Bruce Lee; so does Jim Kelly; so does David Carradine (well, maybe not, but at least Kwai Chang Caine does); so does Iron Fist; and, incidentally, so does Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu, a Marvel martial artist who actually is Chinese. All of this ancillary excitement was the celebration of one Asian dude, the little dragon, Lee Siu Loong, b.k.a. Bruce Lee.

So, no. I was a child in the '70s, when Bruce Lee died but his phenomenon did not, when Iron Fist was created. I was not offended, because even then I knew that a character like Iron Fist was the creation of white folk who wished beyond wishing that they could be as cool and badass as a particular Asian dude.

Do I think Asian-Americans are underrepresented in Hollywood? Absolutely.

Do I think Iron Fist should be arbitrarily made Asian? Well, to be honest, I don't care how they change Iron Fist. That's just my policy, one that I've stated here before. No matter what they do to Iron Fist now, I still have the Heroes For Hire of my childhood, and to be honest, I loved them just the way they were.

However, am I offended that they've stayed true to Iron Fist's Caucasian roots? Hell, no!

And, incidentally, would I like to see a Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu movie or series? YES, please! And you can keep the white dudes like Sir Dennis and Black Jack Tarr around, too. I like them.

That's just my two cents as an old-ass Asian-American geek.

Oh, and I like the ginormous IF collar. (Sorry, adgy)

I still want to be Bruce Lee!

Team collar is bull****!

The no collar, no exposed chest is clearly superior.

Probably best to get rid of his pansy yellow booties, too.

Having followed the heated debate here as a newcomer to the character, I took it upon myself to do some research and I now offer my opinion:

Collar, booties, and the Kristofferson chest are all dumb.

Lemme 'splain.

- A collar that high would impair peripheral vision. Unless you're Daredevil blind, that's a significant issue.

- I get that traditionally, fighters were barefoot or wore slippers. But if you're running around NY's streets and alleys, you're gonna want a sole to separate you from the needles and s***.

- An exposed chest down to the navel would not stay that tight to a body in a fight. It's structurally unsound. Either wear a full shirt, go shirtless, or go back to the late 70s. I also get that he was a 70s character, but the Marvel TV universe ain't.

Plus, it looks dumb.

If you don't see the big yellow collars and open shirts, how do you know you've got Heroes for Hire?

The collar harnesses one's chi.

Duh.
