Robert Downey Jr. Reiterates His Consideration of Retiring from Iron Man | Collider

Speaking to GQ, Downey says that the injury was a bit of a wakeup call to return to more personal projects:

“It got me thinking about how big the message from your cosmic sponsor needs to be before you pick it up. How many genre movies can I do? How many follow-ups to a successful follow-up are actually fun? Because, as quiet as it’s kept, I come from a family of very innovative writers and directors and actors and artists, and the circle of friends they were in were the people I heard having pun-offs playing poker at two in the morning, and it was just the most comforting aspect of my childhood. So there’s this kind of legacy of souls from what I consider to be a very particular time in entertainment, and I’m sensing a return to that—it’s what me and the missus are doing next. It’s not unlike: I heard Brady signed on for three more years with New England, and then he’s done being a QB, because he’ll be 40. I’m 47, and I’ll be 50.”

Someone wants more money? Look, Iron Man/RDJ is the lynchpin of the Marvel Universe. They could replace him...but not now with them on the verge of proliferating the market. They need to hang onto him as the face a little longer. One thing they have not experienced is an abject failure. That's going to be the real test of whether they can stand to rotate actors in and out. I worry that Guardians of the Galaxy, should it fail, will be the death of the riskier side of the Marvel projects.

Nah. I don't think money is a thing for him at this point. I think he's likely just tiring of being the same guy for the past seven years and knowing he's gotta be it for another couple. RDJ has never been about some artsy farsty stuff, but I gotta imagine he wants to just do some different things. Some guys revel in being typecast in a role, but guys that are so wound up like him probably find it difficult to focus in that sort of lifestyle.
 
And this is the inevitable issue with making live action films about pulp characters that never die.

We all got used to a different James Bond and a differnt Batman.... we can live with Justin Bieber as Tony Stark. Or whoever.

If they can't get the current actor to keep going, I don't have too much of a problem with switching actors, although the whole musical Batmans in the previous series was ridiculous. Part of that might have been the horrendous casting of Kilmer and Clooney.

What annoys me is the current trend of just starting a series over from the beginning for no real reason, like they did with the Spiderman movie. I already saw Spiderman get his powers. The only time a series should be restarted is after an epic disaster like Batman & Robin and Die Another Day. I mean, after nipples on Batsuits and invisible cars, there's just no recovering.

If you want to remake something, why not make a new Catwoman movie? The previous one is one of the worst films of all time, so there is nowhere to go but up. Also, and far more importantly, more Anne Hathaway in that suit.

I would take more of seeing Anne Hathaway in that suit again.
