The Comic Books and Comic Book movies thread

I watched Jessica Jones in 2 sittings last weekend, so I'll thrown in my two cents. LOVED this series. I wasn't sure about her at first, but I thought Krysten Ritter was great and Mike Colter as Luke Cage was soooooo perfectly cast. I can't get over it.

Kilgrave is one of the best Marvel villains so far. Lucky he's focusing his powers on Jessica because he could **** **** up. David Tennant is killing it in this role. Although I don't really get the people who are attracted to him and think Kilgrave is charming?????? Ain't nothing charming about that psychopath.

Absolutely fantastic series though. Marvel's been A+ with these Netflix shows so far.

I finished the Jessica Jones and really enjoyed it. I thought it was well acted and that ending was satisfying, which is making me wonder what direction this will go if it gets picked up for a second season. With Daredevil and Jessica Jones, I am impressed with how Netflix is able to tell dark and mature comic book based stories. Aside from the silly name, which was obviously intentional, Killgrave was just pure evil. I like Kingpin and he was both evil, but sympathetic at times. Killgrave was just slimey and evil incarnate regardless of his troubled childhood.

I guess I'll go try Supergirl, which I have been afraid to watch, haha. But dunno with how dark Jessica Jones got and with my watching of Fargo, I need something lighter to watch or I'll develop more of a complex. ;)

Plus Red Tornado was on it!! :D

According to what you guys said about the comics, as bad as Kilgrave may be...it sounds like they toned the more, errrrrr rapier elements of the story down a bit for Netflix. Is that so?

I havent read the comics but they definitely treaded lightly around the rape issue. It was mentioned that he made her do stuff she didnt want to do obviously, but they never flat out mention rape.

Did you guys get all the way through the show? Jessica says that Kilgrave raped her more than once. Kilgrave just doesn't see it as rape. But yes, he did rape her, as well as he raped Hope, and they do talk about it quite a bit.

I don't think they tread lightly on the rape issue at all. It's never shown on screen, and it doesn't have to be. The after effects are there and it was handled amazingly well by the showrunners.

When they are back in Jessica's teenage home, I think, they have an argument to whether or not Killgrave raped Jessica. What I gathered is that being as delusional as Killgrave is, he didn't think he did anything wrong, but it's pretty clear that he did raped her both psychologically and physically. It's not something that had to be shown though flashbacks or the like in order to get the point across and I for one didn't want to see a scene showing it.

If my memory serves me correct, which it usually doesn't, haha, doesn't Killgrave also make threats that he will keep Trish and rape her toward the end? So it isn't like that is shown to be beyond him.

Ok, that's what I wanted to know. I was wondering mmmcammy, because you swore off GoT for the rape issue, and you were positive on this. I assumed they glossed over it (btw, this isn't a judgement or hypocrisy accusation...I cast no opinion) because of that. Now, from what I can tell, it was an integral part of the comics, for better or worse, and I was really interested to see if they would leave it out altogether for the show. Now, the showrunner is a woman...and from what you all say, there is no graphic depiction, more subtle allusions. So I would guess that presented in that way it would certainly be more forgivable than Game's hard to watch scenes. Thanks to all for clarifying. I still haven't watched DD, I may skip that and go to this, simply because it sounds a lot more complex.

I know they can't go all afro headband, yellow shirt, chain belt like the '70's version...but I am so not feeling this version. May as well be watching one of a gazillion failed shows with Morriss Chestnut.

I still think we're gonna get the yellow shirt. I do miss the Afro though, but times change, and the only people who have afros now are Hipsters, lol. :P

I kinda swore off Game of Thrones, not because they show rape (because it happens A LOT and it's unrealistic to remove it altogether), but because they added more than was in the source material, film rape scenes so they're titillating rather than disturbing and also changed a scene that wasn't rape into rape and then insisted it wasn't rape. They just don't know how to handle it.

A lot of TV and movies tend to focus on how men feel about their wives or daughters being raped, but this didn't. It's a story about how Jessica, as a victim, is dealing with it. I like that they didn't have to explicitly show Kilgrave raping her....they had her straight up tell him "You don't think you raped me but you did. You're going to pay for it and I'm going to help all of your other victims too." It's awesome. It's a big part of the show and I'm glad they didn't gloss over it.

I think we are for getting one important thing here, peeps. Jerseydevil hasn't watched Daredevil! :O Say it ain't so! Say it ain't so! :pssst:

First, waiting so long to see The Exorcist and not having watched Daredevil, for a Devil, JD, you don't give the Devil his due as much as you could. ;)

In the comic books....

SPOILERS FOR THE JESSICA JONES/ALIAS COMICS:

Kilgrave never physically raped her. Instead, he made her want him, but never allowed her to have him. He would tell her to want him more than anything else in the world and then make her watch him have sex (rape) with other women. It was all on an emotional/mental level because, he said, he hated superheroes so much.

[/spoilers]

The show pretty much flat out says they did have physical sex which, in this case of course, would be rape.

I think we should, moving forward, try to put the Marvel TV stuff in here. There seems to be a line drawn between their tv/movie properties when you have quotes like this...

It is a smaller scale version of the problem that exists when remembering that Fox holds the rights to some of Marvel’s most popular characters, as does Sony and others.

‘Iron Fist’ Finds Showrunner as Marvel’s Most Mysterious Netflix Series Moves Forward
http://collider.com/iron-fist-netflix-series-showrunner-scott-buck/

Was showrunner for Dexter/Six Feet Under...so depending on what seasons he is either decent, or a hack. Not the most inspiring choice for the one project they seem to be having a LOT of trouble getting a grasp on.

Supergirl had a fun reveal tonight and Jemm was the VOTW. 2015 has been a great year for superheroes.
