Learn Screenwriting through professional screenplays

A review of Brian K Vaughn's script for a Y movie.

Y The Last Man is as crazy as it sounds. And that’s both its biggest strength and its biggest weakness. What I like about Vaughan is that he gives you what every reader asks for. Surprise. Show me something different. And when Vaughan writes, indeed, you’re never quite sure what’ll happen on the next page. But it’s a double-edged sword, since what you get isn’t always satisfying, and occasionally is so broad that even the developers of those weird Japanese video games step back and say, “Whoa dude, not bi-winning, too far.” A lesbian biker gang? The Isralei army? A pet monkey? … In my opinion, Y The Last Man is too broad, too loose with the reigns, but there’s no denying that Vaughan always keeps you guessing and has some of the more unique characters you’ll find in a script. You want to talk about a unique voice, a voice that separates a writer from everybody else out there, go ahead and read one of Vaughan’s scripts. And for that reason alone, I think Y The Last Man should be read.

Marvel Superhero Bits: ‘Amazing Spider-Man,’ Stellan Skarsgard, ‘Daredevil’ Reboot Idea, ‘Iron Man 3′

We already knew, and even saw a glimpse in the trailer, that Stellan Skarsgard plays a Professor (either named Andrews or Selvig, we aren’t sure) in Thor. He’s one of the scientists who works with characters played by Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings. Well, according to an interview with a Swedish newspaper, Skarsgard will be reprising that role in The Avengers.

Gong Li is too old to play Dr Mann and is also Chinese, unlike Dr Mann.

She is also a billion times better of an actress than the more attractive Ms Hu.

Gong Li is an awesome actress.

Her performance in Raise the Red Lantern is one of the greatest things ever.

Raise The Red Lantern gets my vote for best Chinese movie ever. Gong Li is amazing in every Yimou movie she does.

i'm not impressed from what i've seen of her. plus, her part in miami vice....AWESOME.

What do you mean not impressed? Who plays a better bitch than she does?

As for Miami Vice... she was absolutely not the problem with that movie.

And she was the best thing about Memoirs Of A Geisha.

Spidey Bites: Stan Lee’s Secret for Saving Spider-Man the Musical? More Stan Lee! | Little Gold Men | Vanity Fair

Excellent read.

In the Kevin Smith movie Mallrats, Jason Lee asked you a question that has crossed every serious comic fan’s mind at least once in his life. You dismissed it at the time, calling it a “superhero secret.” Are you finally ready to answer Lee’s question?

Remind me.

"Is the Thing’s dork made out of orange rock like the rest of his body?”

I never gave it a thought. I guess common sense would say it was made of orange rock too, but I always thought it was more interesting to think about Reed Richards. As you know, he had the ability to stretch, and sexually, that would seem to be a great asset in many areas. But I’ve got to tell you a funny thing about Mallrats.

Are you changing the subject?

I am. In the movie, I gave some relationship advice to Jason Lee’s character. I told him that I had a girlfriend from my past that I wasn’t able to forget either. I went to the premiere of Mallrats with my lovely wife, and when we came home later that night, she had her hands on her hips and her eyes narrowed, and she said, “Who was this girl in the past that you haven’t forgotten?” I told her, “Honey, that was the script. I was just reading my lines!” I have to be very careful about the roles I play in movies from now on.

Does she ever read your comics and say, “Oh, so you’ve got a thing for redheads now?”

No, I’m very fortunate, because she doesn’t read comics, which is terrible. She’ll never know how talented I am.

What a cool guy.
