L.A. Readers! Mondo Superhero Festival This Weekend At Cinefamily! Donner's SUPERMAN: THE WHOLE DARN THING! Packard's ABAR, THE FIRST BLACK SUPERMAN! And More! [Ain't It Cool News]

With the superhero-stuffed summer of 2011 upon us, the good folks at Cinefamily, Badass Digest and Meltdown Comics are joining forces for a weekend-long celebration of the exceptionally-abled as they have been depicted in all manner of media over the last century!

The Mondo Superhero festival actually begins at 8 PM tonight (April 27th) with the Silent Superheros Serial Sampler. Cabeza de Vaca Arcestra will be on hand to score a selection of vintage (and rarely seen!) episodic shorts which helped lay the groundwork for the genre as it exists today.

But the madness really begins this Friday, April 29th, with the Marvel Comics Mondo Mix (8 PM) followed by the must-be-seen-with-a-crowd-and-a-healthy-buzz PUNISHER: WAR ZONE (9:30 PMish). The former will evidently showcase the "web-slingingest, shield-flingingest, ankle-wingingest clips from all of Earth's Mightiest Mortals' film and television appearances." The latter will feature Ray Stevenson punching through a man's face. Both will restore your faith in the order of things.

Then comes the Superhero Saturday Marathon, which kicks off at 1 PM with Jerry Beck's History of the Animated Superhero at 1 PM. From there it's (in order) Alan Arkin in THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE (followed by a Q&A with director Philipe Mora), the ****ing outstanding ABAR, THE BLACK SUPERMAN (post-film Q&A with director Frank Packard and Abar himself, Tobar Mayo), Guillermo del Toro's HELLBOY (with co-star Doug Jones stopping by), and the delightfully-disorienting Mondo Superhero video montage (sponsored by Everything is Terrible!).

For those with less psychotronic sensibilities, sanity will mostly prevail on Sunday with a SUPERMAN triple feature! Depending on your brain type, the highlight will either be watching Richard Donner's cuts of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE and SUPERMAN II back to back, or Richard Pryor in the wonderful SUPERMAN III (I'll take the Supes-Kent junkyard brawl as the highlight of the series, thankyouverymuch). The Salkind-produced fun begins at 5 PM!

For more info on the programming (including ticket prices and guesstimated show times), check out the Cinefamily's official site. And make sure you've got Badass Digest bookmarked, just 'cuz.

This place is slowly transforming into the LA version of the Alamo Drafthouse.

Allred Art!: THE MADMAN 20th ANNIVERSARY MONSTER!

MADMAN+20th+MagPrevsmall.jpg

Okay, we'll call this the "official" announcement. This is the BIGGEST of the BIG and should be coming at you sometime around Thanksgiving (it's almost completely done, so confidence is high on making that goal). Here's the skinny: This baby will be published at the enormous size of approximately 11 x 17 inches in Hard Cover. If you saw the Wednesday Comics collection you'll have a very good idea of the format, only FATTER. This very special book will feature my biggest and most important Frank "Madman" Einstein story yet (no hype here), as well as ALL-NEW "monster-size" strips from all three Hernandez Bros., Matt Wagner, Bernie Mireault, Joe Quinones, Frank Quitely, Peter Bagge, Dean Haspiel, Dave Cooper, Eric Powell, Darwyn Cooke, Philip Bond & Peter Milligan, Jay Stephens, Erik Larsen, David Mack, Pat McEown, Craig Thompson, Paul Pope, Jeff Smith, Steven T. Seagle & Teddy Kristiansen, Michael Avon Oeming, Al Columbia, and Kyle Baker! There's a framing device written by Jamie S. Rich drawn by Valentino and myself, an incredible essay on independent characters by Adam McGovern illustrated by Michel Fiffe and myself, and then...

THEN every single Madman/Atomics pin-up from the past 20 years including Kirby, Toth, Kubert, Moebius, BWS, Stout, Kaluta, Vess, Stevens, Miller, Simonson, Byrne, Chadwick, Schultz, Rude, Aragones, Nowlan, Bolland, Ware, Clowes, Seth, Woodring, Sale, Cassaday, Acuna, Noto, Grampa, Pander, McCloud, Chiarello, Dorkin, Hewlett, Hughes, Gibbons, Darrow, Adams, Mignola, Lee, Silvestri, Harris, Bolton, Brereton, Thompson, Bradstreet, Gianni, Johnson, Burns, Ross, Morrison, Silverman, Moore, Morse, Mahfood, Russell, Rivoche, Cherkas, Hampton, Sienkiewicz, Silke, Hempel, Groening, Watson, Wray, Lark, Cho, Blevins, Manley, Bone, Del Carmen, Timm, and many MANY more! HUGE!

MUST. BUY.

I can't have a book where John Constantine is talking to Batman and Superman go unpurchased.

You only mentioned one cool person in this WHOLE sentence. I still don't understand why you like Constantine so much. I know it makes you hang your head in shame but I'd rather what the Keanu Reeves movie that try to read another Hellblazer comic. He didn't do anything but walk around and smoke. Why is it called Hellblazer when there was nothing Hell related (aside from my being bored enough to feel like I'm in hell) in it?

Where's all the demon killing?

There was lots of fighting demons. It builds to it. Gotta lay the foundation before you can build the house.
