The Rocketeer's return to comics

The biggest draw here is easily the artwork, and this opening issue goes straight after my own heart with work by some of my all-time favorite artists. The opening segment makes me wish John Cassaday would go back to doing sequential artwork. His style and charm lends itself perfectly to the pulp origins of the character. Mike Allred's portion contains the same quirky humor and sensibilities of his previous work and a fantastic spread of the Rocketeer flying over New York City. I'm not familiar with the work of artist Michael Kaluta, but his highly detailed style left quite an impression on me. The "Dear Betty" story he and writer Kurt Busiek produced ended up being my favorite because it's a stronger package when it comes to both story and art. Plus that final page is full of all kinds of win.

Rocketeer Adventures has so many great things going for it that you'd be a silly fool if you didn't pick it up. The Rocketeer is only 30 years old but much like Dave Stevens did in his original comics, these creators succeed in producing timeless and iconic pulp stories that all comic fans can enjoy.

I have to rewatch that flick. A lot of folks cling to it as the first of the real superhero flicks that was way before it's time. The guy who played the Rocketeer has been absolutely brilliant on AMC's the Killing, Joe Johnston is seemingly hitting Cap'n America out of the park, and...well, Jennifer Connelly.

Flashpost: The Issue One Renumbering Of The DC Universe Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

In September, all the DC Comics published set within the DC Universe will be renumbered with new issue ones.

Every comic continuing from September will be relaunched with a shiny #1. Every. Single. One. With no current plan for the renumbering to reverse to any so-called ?legacy? numbering.

And with those issue one renumberings, will come a new rejigged status quo. And yes, characters will be changed. Some may no longer exist. There will be new books, new creators, new teams, new characters and new? new. With no current plan for the new status quo to be undone or reversed.

Warner Bros Looks to Make Hawkman Soar

Hawkman is a complicated character to talk about because he’s had a bunch of different origin stories that all kind of conflict and contradict when looked at as a whole. Also there are two versions of Hawkman, one who is an Earthman and one who is an alien that comes from a planet of hawk-like people. Due to the copy being put out by Warner Bros, it’s clear they’re looking at adapting the Earth based character. I think that’s pretty cool, because despite the fact that Hawkman is second only to Aquaman in getting made fun of as a lame superhero, I’ve always thought the original version of the character from the pages of “JSA” was underrated as a badass.

Hawkman starts his story as Prince Khufu. He’s an Egyptian Prince who has a lovely consort by the name of Chay-Ara and an archenemy by the name of Hath-Set. Hath-Set kills Khufu and Chay-Ara with a mystical knife that has the effect of causing them to be reincarnated over and over again as a tragic set of lovers. Eventually Khufu is reincarnated as an American archaeologist named Carter Hall and Chay-Ara a woman named Shiera Sanders. When Carter is digging around in the Egyptian sand, he touches the knife that caused his original death as Khufu, and suddenly becomes aware of all his past lives and experiences. He eventually uses this knowledge and his access to mystical, ancient stuff to turn himself into Hawkman and Shiera into Hawkgirl. So you get that Indiana Jones archeological adventure stuff with the character, you get a female love interest who is a badass fighter in her own right instead of just some boring, simpering twit, and also you get a hero who is huge and angry and smashes things a lot like Thor. Say what you will about Hawkman, I think he’s pretty swell. Get a good team working on this project, and it will be one of the upcoming superhero movies I’m most looking forward to.

I am all for this being a fan of all things Hawkman, but this is probably never going to happen and if it does it will be more a hot garbage fire than Green Lantern looks like. But, what the hell...who knows?

Been reading some about this and... I don't get it. I can't understand why. I think this is going to blow up in their faces and at some point, they'll have to revert back to an extent.

Sigh.

I wonder what's going to happen with stuff from DCU that I actually read. Like Batman Inc....

I think a lot of titles are going to go away. I think it's a case of DC going Ultimates and not keeping two continuities going. Will it blow up/revert at some point sure. But it will jumpstart sales for a while and certainly conversation. I have a feeling there will be far fewer titles when the smoke clears, which is fine because 16 Batman titles and 17 Superman titles are a bit much.

I did read that Barbara Gordon is going to be Batgirl again, so that's interesting. And Action comics is restarting with Deadman as the featured character...so that's cool too. Personally, I have always been a DC guy so I am kinda intrigued by the whole thing.
