What say you about the weird retro feel to the new DC universe Adgy? Supernaturals playing in the same fields as capes? Blackhawks(updated), Sgt Rock, and other oddities getting front and center love. Deathstroke(who really should be DC's stern answer to Deadpool) getting his own title(again). We are a Kamandi and Kobra away from the DC titles of my youth. Sad thing is, half this stuff will get cancelled because it is too odd for the younguns and too different for old fans like me. As always, DC has brave ideas that are doomed to fail in a fickle marketplace.
I think you're right. I have absolutely no problems with Constantine and Swamp Thing and everybody being in the regular DCU (although if they cancel the Hellblazer title, my tune's gonna change really quickly), but I also have my doubts about whether or not this whole thing is going to work.
And I still think things will likely go back to the status quo in about a year. Comic fans rarely embrace wholesale changes like this, it seems to me.
Like I said before, I'm all for revamping creative teams and taking chances with it, but I really don't think they needed to relaunch every single one of these titles with new #1's to do that.
Also, for some weird reason, I'm a little sad to see the numbering for stuff like Detective Comics and Action Comics get reset. Will we ever see a comic get that high again? I read somewhere that with Detective getting the renumbering, Hellblazer is the longest running series in comics.
I hope that's not a bad sign.
As for the retro stuff... IMO, the lack of a consistent Deathstroke presence has been something DC has been stupid about. He's probably the coolest character in the DCU after Batman and he should have had a monthly and it should have been badass. Hopefully, this new one is at least that.
Beyond that, I don't really have an opinion because I was never that in to DC going up and I don't have much in the way of fondness for them. But, I do think it's going to make for some tough selling.
Secret Six is done. BoP is changed for the worse. Gail Simone is writing Batgirl (Babs?) and Firestorm (which we all know won't last past #12).
I'll tell you one thing that's definitely negative about all of this... whatever desire I had to catch up on what's happening in the DCU via trades (like with the new Birds Of Prey book), is all but gone. If the stories in those pages are about to be rendered meaningless, then why drop $30 on a hardcover or $20 on a paperback?
I'll probably wait until I can get it on eBay for half price or so.
Still no word on PG or Zatanna, so I guess those are done too.
I think Zatanna is going to be in that JLA Dark book.
Worst is that $3.99 prices are back.
Is that confirmed? I haven't read any sites yet today. Is it just for the #1's, then?
I'll be paring-down my DC list to a tiny sliver of what it was 2 weeks ago.
You're probably not alone. The only core DC book I've been buying monthly, though, has been Batman Inc, so they'll be getting more of my money.
