‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ Review | /Film

Happily, the rest of the film is strong enough to make up for that lack. The action is unrealistic, to be sure, but it’s done well enough that it looks cool and exciting, rather than laughable. The performances from the supporting players are quite good. There’s a touch of bittersweetness to the film, despite of its straightforward morality. And I hear there’s a pretty nifty post-credits sequence, though we didn’t get to see it in our press screening. But the best reason to see this film is Evans, who’s fantastically well cast as Steve Rogers. (Even if the pre-transformation CGI isn’t always entirely convincing.) I can’t wait to see him in next year’s Avengers — which is exactly what Marvel wants, of course.

just got back from a work screening of captain america. just like thor, liked it a lot.

some obvious plot flaws, but comes with suspension of disbelief. Characters were all developed well (matrix agent guy was a great german. natalie portman kind of annoyed me in Thor, the girl in this one was much better). great action scenes - obviously somewhat unbelievable, but so is the fact that the US just happened to have the one piece of metal for his shield that could stop red skull's blue blasts. entertainment for sure.

I'm not too familiar with the comic, but liked the infusion of 1940s wartime, and accompanying propaganda.

The general murmur I heard was that a lot of folks who had reservations going in, left with really favorable opinions. Should do really well.

Missed this panel. Not feeling the trailer though.

Detailed report forthcoming, but here's the quick of it: Andrew Garfield NAILS Peter Parker and Spider-Man. He's a smart-ass to thugs, thank God. Emma Stone is perfect as Gwen Stacey and her chemistry with Peter Parker is sweet, innocently flirty. Perfect. Martin Sheen is great as Uncle Ben... stern, but with a sense of humor. Sally Field doesn't look the part at all (no white haired Aunt May this time around), but we didn't see enough of her for me to pass any real judgment. Rhys Ifans seemed to really get the great sadness of Dr. Curt Connors.

They confirmed the Lizard is the big baddie and showed us quite a bit of footage, including some mid-way transformation (looked good, real make-up, etc) and some full on Lizard action, which wasn't as thrilling. The CG wasn't bad, but he's hulked out.

The new Lizard is massive, looking more like a cross between Venom and Killer Croc. The face has an original Ditko symmetry to it and the tongue did poke out at two frightened girls (he makes his big entrance from a girl's toilet, believe it or not). But no lab coat, naked lizard green body all bulked up and full of CGI fury.

I'll give the filmmakers a little leeway on the CGI... we are a full year away from the movie's release, but I don't think I'm a fan of this giant hulking CGI Lizard from a design perspective or a technical perspective. The rest of the world seems to be grounded, stunts are real, action real, and then there's this big CGI thing in the middle of it all with little personality, at least from what was shown.

Comic-Con: Quint checks out some Neveldine/Taylor/Cage craziness at the Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance panel!

Outside of one really iffy CG shot of screaming Nic Cage head turning into screaming Ghost Rider flaming skull, the flick looked crazy fun. As you?d expect from Neveldine and Taylor everything was over the top and dark. For instance, there?s one shot of the Ghost Rider face to face with a badass biker dude as the bad guy pulls an Uzi and fires straight into his face. The Ghost Rider is screaming, the Uzi clip unloading into his mouth. Clip runs dry and the Rider screams again, spitting out a spray of hot molten lead.

And, unless I?m mistaken, the footage ended with a little kid asking Nic Cage what happens when he needs to pee when he?s ablaze and then we see a back shot of Ghost Rider literally pissing flame. I mean, I know my eyes saw it, but my brain is having trouble processing that actually happened.

Other flashes? Ghost Rider whips a molten chain around a dude and tugs, causing him to erupt into a flurry of ashes, Ghost Rider standing on top of a giant truck-like machine that is his new hell-ride, looking like a demonic version of a Mad Max shot, flames shooting from the wheels and all that jazz.

It?s hard to tell if it?ll all gel together, but when you put something as crazy as Ghost Rider in the hands of maniacs like Neveldine and Taylor it?s a good fit. The footage supported that insanity and I hope the movie is even more bat**** than I?m expecting.

The panel was pretty short, but here are a few tidbits from the guys on the panel, including Idris Elba, Neveldine, Taylor and Nic Cage.

-What comic book character would you like to play? Idris ? Luke Cage, big time and is actively pursuing it. Nic ? Ghost Rider ?because it happened and I?ve always sympathized with monsters.? Taylor said Catwoman.

-The giant truck we see Ghost Rider riding all Lord Humungus style is a Stripminer, which has the ability to cut mountains in half? So we can expect to see him cause some **** to go down when he turns it into a Hellminer.

-More Ghost Riders for Neveldine and Taylor? They loved making it, it?s up to box office.

-How is Johnny Blaze different from the first movie? Nic Cage said that the biggest difference is that he?s had a few years to live with his head catching on fire and it?s had a noticeable effect on his mood.

-What crazy camera stunt wouldn?t Neveldine and Taylor do? ?What would you suggest?? The audience member who asked the question replied with ?Waterfall?? Neveldine: ?Going over a waterfall in a barrel? Sign me up!?

And that?s about it for Ghost Rider!

Really sorry I missed this. The promo art on the Hard Rock is pretty kick ass and a good sign that Neveldine/Taylor may have made a crazy cool bat**** movie.

Animated Version Of Dark Knight Returns Heads Up DC Toon Movies For 2012 Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

At a Warner Animation panel at Comic-Con, timed to coincide with the premiere of Year One, it was announced that the first film on next year’s DC toon roster will be Justice League: Doom. This will be derived from Mark Waid’s Tower of Babel story in JLA. I don’t know the comics at all, and I just tried to defer to expert assistance but… erm… it didn’t elicit much of a response.

So on to the second release, Superman vs. The Elite. The basis here is What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?, Joe Kelly’s infamous retort to The Authority and similar hero-baiting tales. The original comic was much feted, often by those with a political agenda, though not exclusively.

And, rounding out the announced titles is the real big dog: The Dark Knight Returns. We scooped that this was coming back in April, but today it became general public knowledge with a DC rubber stamp on.

What we didn’t know until now is that Returns will be released as a two-parter. No casting was confirmed, but it was suggested that Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill would be under consideration for Batman and the Joker. I’ll believe it when I hear it.

Bill Willingham And Phil Jimenez Launch Fables Spinoff, Fairest Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

But now all those spin-off mini-series will appear as an ongoing series-of-mini-series called Fairest, announced at the Fables panel at San Diego Comic Con. A consolidation if you will. An attempt at increased brand and franchise building. And basically turning Fables into a bi-weekly again, after the end of Jack Of Fables.

The first arc will be by Fables creator Bill Willingham and artist Phil Jimenez, starring Sleeping Beauty. It will be followed by a Rapunzel arc by Lauren Beukes and Inaki Miranda.
