The Comic Books and Comic Book movies thread

‘Amazing Spider-Man’ director: Why the web-shooters are back | Hero Complex – movies, comics, fanboy fare – latimes.com

”I had a meeting with Stan Lee and we talked about the web-shooters,” Webb said. “I was curious about the incarnation of them [because] of course in the previous films [they went away from them] and we wanted to reestablish ourselves. That was one thing but the other thing was the fact that the web-shooters were able to dramatize Peter’s intellect and I thought that was really cool. … It was in the comics and we have a different design but it’s a cool element to have. It’s not something we over-use or over-exploit. To me, it’s something I remember from when I was a kid and thinking ‘It would be cool if I could build those.’”

TV Castings: Molly Parker Joins NBC’s ‘The Firm’, Vinnie Jones Added To FX’s ‘Powers’ – Deadline.com

Vinnie Jones has been added to the cast of FX's pilot Powers, based on the graphic novel of the same name. It centers on two detectives, Christian Walker (Jason Patric) and Deena Pilgrim (Lucy Punch), in a homicide department that deals with cases involving "powers" (people with superpowers). Jones, repped by APA and Elevate, will play the regular character of Johnny Royalle, a criminal kingpin who possesses telekinesis, among other abilities.

Awesome news.

AICN COMICS Q&@: Johnny Destructo talks DAMAGED with writer David Lapham!!!

This is comics, so the Punisher’s a strong reference point, but there’s a lot I know I’m bringing to the table here. But yes, if you think the Punisher is cool and badass, I think if you just read the opening sequence in issue #1 you’ll find that Henry more than satisfies.

A book by Lapham and Leo Manco is going to get my money regardless of the subject.

JD: Seriously, what the #@%k is up with STRAY BULLETS? I miss it.

DL: Me, too. Greatly. I made a decision that I didn’t wanted to do STRAY with another company. Only El Capitan, so unfortunately that means it has to wait until we’re ready to take on that challenge again.

DC Universe: The Source ? Blog Archive ? BEHIND THE SCENES OF DC COMICS-THE NEW 52: THE ANIMAL MAN PROPOSAL

Today, we’re going to kick off these posts by showing you highlights from Jeff Lemire’s original proposal for the series. Keep in mind that this is not the entire proposal and that some of the information has been redacted, but there are spoilers nonetheless. So if you want your reading experience to be spoiler free, please stop reading now.

Guess I'll stop reading now. Dammit.

I will tell you 'why not' Doc. I thought about this a lot last night...first off I am against retro fitting established characters to fill quotas. It's not a race thing either. I would be just as upset with Jimmy Olson being recast as a woman. Or Lex Luthor as an albino norweigan. Hey, there are some new Snow White movies coming out...how about a 'united colors of Benneton' set of dwarves? NO. Like it or not these characters were CREATED as they are. No substitutes.
And mostly, this is why a Superman movie relaunch will always fail. Like it or not Metropolis and Superman exist in a vacuum. Unlike Batman, who has successfully been tampered with and has the flexibility, Superman is what he is. A big blue boy scout in a world that really hasn't changed much since the 50's. If I am not mistaken, the biggest complaint most have with Superman Returns is that it took too many liberties with the Supes mythology. That's why Donner's films are considered so successful. They embraced the obvious limitations of Superman's 'world'. While I love Fishburne as an actor I just think this is the sort of tinkering that will eventually do this movie in. Superman is an anachronism. He works for a friggin NEWSPAPER for ****s sake!!!! It would appear the military is the major antagonist in this film...wow, that's current. You can't have it both ways. If you want to do a complete revamp of Superman, you can't nickle and dime it. Hell, Red Son is there for the taking...commit. But to basically make a Superman movie as is and have your major contribution be to make it politically correct casting wise...well that's bush league.

edit:After thinking about it for a while I would imagine you are going to question my semi endorsement of Idris Elba in Thor. Well, I wasn't thrilled with that but my mancrush on Elba overwhelmed my judgement. Looking back on it now...it's just as egregious and I should have been more vocally offended by it. Once again, I want to stress this is not about race. It's almost more rascist to change a supporting character as some sort of token move to appeal more to a wider audience.

Sorry folks. I don’t have the time to dig through the whole thread to see the reviews of Thor and Capn’ Merica. I didn’t see Thor, and from what I can tell from my friends I’m glad I didn’t. I did see Captain America the other day and thought it was a flaming cat turd of a movie. I did like the fact that it was kinda dark with all the killing of people. Not that I particularly like seeing people killed, but it did bring a level of sinister to Red Skull that would have been lost if they didn’t do it.

I just thought the whole thing was waaaaaaay too contrived and too boy scout-esque. CA is Marvel’s Superman. Big, blue and boring. The funny thing is that this guy basically took steroids to get where he is. He didn’t workout hard. He took drugs to get where he is today. Nice message Marvel/Fox.
And really? One guy goes into the most heavily guarded compound in the world by himself, frees everyone, finds his friend and destroys the whole thing? He’s able to deflect lasers with a shield? He’s faster than the speed of light? WTF? He seeks out every Hydra hideout and destroys it without losing a single man from his company until his best friend falls to his death from the train. This movie was dumb on many levels. It basically was a bridge to develop the character and get CA to present day so they can crap out this Avengers movie.
This movie was lame, super campy and ****ed out.
