The Comic Books and Comic Book movies thread

so spill...what's still good, what's getting better, what needs to go...I know you do not read comics...but what can you tell me?

I'm not really sure... it's too early.

EDIT : BUT I'm attempting to "not" read all 52 titles.

I think it's fair to say that Animal Man is pretty good.

Demon Knights, and Resurrection man look like solid bets too.

I'm running behind on Demon Knights because I just can't be bothered to care about swords and sorcery anymore.

Resurrection Man is..... interesting.

cool. Even Grifter looks marginally entertaining. Surprised really, this whole DC rebirth thing is, in retrospect, a great idea...I think they are still reaping rewards market wise and I want to chalk a lot of that up to the fact that they went retro/supernatural heavy and they seemed to have picked some really good creative teams to work the books. In my youth DC were the oddball bunch, Kamandi/Kobra/all star squadron...just weird tales. Hell, they even had Weird Tales and Weird War tales...etc. I am surprised that they haven't brought back the REAL House of Secrets with Kane & Abel. I swear, some of the titles they are putting out right now...should smell like the musty newsprint of my childhood. Well done DC. So far so good.

I'm slightly miffed because I've been calling for this for years (altho they're not really going as far as I would have) and I was called crazy and told it would never happen.

Grifter is actually far more interesting than I thought it would be... but it's still a little... I dunno.... 90'sish?

In fact... a LOT of the books have a kind of "what's the point of this?" kind of extra pouches/muscles kind of feel.

Plus I just hate the idea of Damien Wayne no matter how much I may be interested in reading his adventures.

If I read comics. Which I don't.

Funny thing is...the mainstream DC books are the ones that seem the least interesting. Although that link I posted
Fourteen Thoughts About Fourteen DC Comics

did say this,

One thing I was struck with, watching the Green Lantern movie, was how good Mark Strong was as Sinestro, how he should have been the lead character in the movie, and what the hell is this Hal Jordan guy hogging the screen when Sinestro was getting short shrift. It really does appear that Geoff Johns thought the same way, and here every chance he gets, Sinestro gets to fill the screen and deliver bold, brash and very angry lines. The man in charge, the man with a plan and the only character in Green Lantern #3 you’d actually have any time for. With Doug Mahnke channelling his inner Bolland beautifully. More, more, more. Kill Hal Jordan off again, you can take the HEAT.

which immediately perked my ears up. Never was a big Hal Jordan fan, but this sounds hella good. 'inner Bolland', well, I hear that and I am loving meself.

I used love buying cheap back issues of weird and offbeat titles that DC published in the '70's. Seriously, what was in the water during those years? Lol! I mean that in a good way. I think part of it was the comics code opening up and letting writers and artists write stories about monsters, demons, and supernatural stuff in general. Part of it seem that people were much more into weird and experimental stories during that decade, and while that resulted in a lot of silliness, some really good stuff came out then. (And maybe there was drugs ;) ).

DC has kept that spirit with Vertigo, which is good, but the idea of playing around with more mainstream characters too is exciting. Hopefully, taking mainstream characters into interesting directions comes out of this relaunch. But hey, at least, sometimes, DC is trying. Marvel? Meh. Marvel 'experimenting' is adding 'bad words' to Spider-Man comics, yay! mhihi:

And don't ask too much for any solid opinions of this DC stuff yet. I come from the school of thought that says one needs to read a comic series for about six months before deciding whether the title is working or not. ;)

Hmm... Well I'm a HUGE Hal Jordan fan but I was a fan of the Hal Jordan from "Emerald Dawn" and "The Road Back", not the bland Paul Newman-esque proto-hero that he's usually portrayed as.

I don't much care for the direction the Green Lantern corner of the DCU has gone over the last 5 years and I don't think the current Sinestro arc is all that interesting either. It COULD be I suppose... but I've got no patience left for any of the other 6 "Rainbow Corps". I want Dave Gibbons steering the ship again.

But yea... the mainstream books are the most boring.

You wanted to know what's bad? Justice League International.

They took a great mini-series, built up fan interest and have just completely murdered any and all momentum.

Is Giffen on that book, cause as far as I am concerned NOBODY had a better run with the JL books. I have to dig some of those out just for the beautiful artwork of Batman/Martian Manhunter scornfully looking down their noses at Blue Beetle(Ted Kord...nobody else) and Booster Gold while they laughed maniacally.

Here's the reeeeeeeeeeeeeedonkulus part...

He WAS on the Miniseries that was so great... but he's not on the new monthly.

And there ya go...but hasn't he been brought in to save one of the Superman titles??? I thought I read that...

Grant Morrison is supposed to save Superman, lol.

I like Grant Morrison and all, but maybe it's just me, but he seems out of place writing Supes.

Man, I missed a lot.

I haven't read this week's books, but I've been keeping up with about a dozen of the new 52. I'm enjoying all of them to varying degrees, but if I had one gripe with them it's that a lot of them seem to be made for the trade paperback. For a lot of the books, nothing much (felt like it) happened in the first one or two issues and only now in month three is the setup from those books starting to pay off.

Having said that, yeah Demon Knights and Frankenstein are still my two favorites. And Batwoman, of course, but that's mostly for the art. Animal Man is really good, the last issue of Swamp Thing was really good. The two Batman books I was originally buying I think I'm just going to wait for the trades on, though they weren't bad. Action Comics is... interesting. Wonder Woman is really good so far (and the art is awesome).

Let's see... what else?

Justice League is ok. Relatively enjoyable. Justice League Dark is ok, still feels like it's in setup mode, though.

I have to admit, I half expected this relaunch to blow up in DC's face, but so far it's been pretty damn impressive.

Looking forward to finally getting to read this.

Oh it's a great series. I bought the issues when they were new - got them signed by Grant too. Sad that they'll go down in value because of this, but happy that more people will read it. I wasn't going to sell my originals anyway

I actually had two or three of the issues, but never read them because I couldn't get the one I was missing. Ended up selling the ones I did have on eBay a bunch of years ago for a bunch of money. It was nice.

Michael Fassbender Talks X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Sequel

With A Dangerous Method hitting theaters on November 23rd and the NC-17 rated Shame opening on December 2nd, Michael Fassbender is busy promoting both films and his truly excellent performances in each. Although very different films, they each explore themes of sex and sexuality, and what is culturally accepted behavior in the bedroom.

While Collider got to sit down with the ultra-busy actor to talk about those films, we’ll run the video interview closer to their release dates. However, in the meantime, we did want to share what he had to say about his return to the role of Magneto for the eventual sequel to X-Men: First Class, how he’s looking forward to working on ideas with James McAvoy and hopefully Matthew Vaughn, and that he’s interested to see how Charles Xavier turns into Professor X. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

X-Men: First Class was both a critical and commercial hit. What are you looking forward to with the sequel, and do you know when you’ll start filming?

MICHAEL FASSBENDER: I have no idea. I’m looking forward to working with all those people again. We had a lot of fun. It was a great cast and a great crew. Hopefully, I’ll get in at ground level and start putting some ideas together myself, with James [McAvoy] and, hopefully, (director) Matthew [Vaughn], and we can see what happens next.

I’m really interested to see what happens to Charles (James McAvoy), in the next one, and see how he becomes Professor X ‘cause we got to see Erik turn into Magneto, in the first one. It will be interesting to see who shaves Charles’ head. When he’s drunk one night, the mutants will go in there and shave his head and shave off his eyebrows. Maybe.

Magneto : Nazi Hunter

It's all I want to see... why won't they make the movie I want to see :cbgb:
