The Comic Books and Comic Book movies thread

When I worked for a comic book store the Valiant titles were the nerds that the comic book store nerds bullied.

A couple weeks ago, I was telling the sad story of Valiant to a buddy of mine who's just starting to get into comics (thanks, Guardians of The Galaxy!!) and about how I used to rip pages out of Valiant comics to wrap presents because the paper was more valuable that way.

Their relaunch seems to be doing well, though, which is cool.

They were wayyyyyyyy too smart and very dry. They were trying to appeal to the adult reader. All I remember is that folks were confused by them. They were minimalist and almost HEAVY METAL(the mag) in nature. The average weekly customer just didn't have the time for em.

Ryan Reynolds Says DEADPOOL Shows “Slavish Devotion” to the Character
http://collider.com/deadpool-ryan-reynolds/

“I’m incredibly happy about it – we’ve got a director that understands that world, and writers with a slavish devotion to the canon of that character. That’s the most important aspect: it’s made in a way the most critical of fanboys could embrace. Well, that’s the hope.”

whyyyyyyyyyyy am I concerned that something that sounds too good to be true...

Yeah, but those were the days of Image in it's peak. Books like Valiant that weren't composed of continuous one page spread sheets were deemed boring. ;)

True. But that is what KILLED Valiant the first time around. I would imagine that stuff has aged tremendously well. Just ahead of it's time.

I would be very interested in going back and reading some of it. I remember liking them just fine when they were coming out, but the local store had a bajillion copies of everything, so I used them as free wrapping paper.

Garth Ennis' New Punisher Comic Won't Feature The Punisher - And Neither Will His New Romantic Comedy

A Marvel MAX series entitled The Platoon, will sees Frank Castle’s first tour of duty in Vietnam, with no Punisher, no skull, just Frank Castle being dropped right into it.

As Avatar publisher William Christensen said, “so you were being sneaky, you’re just writing a war story but calling it the Punisher?” “Yup.”
He’s also working on, surprisingly, a romantic comedy called Train Of Love, as well as the previously announce new Johnny Red comic for Titan. And for Avatar what he called “interesting stuff with Alan Moore.”

He also gave us more details on Section 8 for DC, a sic-issue mini-series reviving the worst superhero characters from Hitman, with Six Pack, Dogwelder and the gang getting everyone back together, made trickier as a number of them are dead. Managing to recreate seven of them, Six Pack then has to find an eighth. And he starts by asking Batman…

Legendary Announces TRICK ‘R TREAT and KRAMPUS Graphic Novels for Release This Year
http://collider.com/trick-r-treat-graphic-novel-krampus/

Man, I’ve been waiting for this news. Michael Dougherty’s horror anthology film Trick ‘R Treat has become a staple of the holiday and has achieved cult status since its release in 2007. And now, Legendary Pictures has announced that a Trick ‘R Treat graphic novel will be released this October in order to bridge the gap between the first film and its upcoming sequel.

With this news, Dougherty promises to bring us back into the world of Sam and his Halloween haunts with 4 all-new tales of terror spinning out of the world of this scary classic. While the sequel, which was announced in late 2013, has yet to receive an official release date, this book shows us that the gears are still in motion and further announcements may be sooner than we’d think for Trick ‘R Treat 2. On the graphic novel, Dougherty takes on story duties along with Zach Shields and Todd Casey, while the book itself will be written by comic book veteran, Marc Andreyko. The art supplied for the book will be by Fiona Staples (of Image Comics’ Saga fame), along with Stuart Sayger, Stephen Byrne, and Zid.

Alongside Trick ‘R Treat, Dougherty and Co. are also exploring the Christmas horror icon “the Krampus” with the appropriately named film Krampus, which is currently in production with Dougherty directing. In addition to the Trick ‘R Treat graphic novel, Legendary is also releasing a Krampus graphic novel this November.

The Krampus graphic novel promises to further delve into the creature who steals children from their beds, places them into a basket, and beats them with reeds (in the original tales of course). The Krampus certainly doesn’t have the pull and “brand recognition” that Santa Claus does, but it’s a pretty creepy concept all the same. The original story team from Trick ‘R Treat returns for this one, with writer Brandon Seifert taking on the writing duties for the graphic novel, and art supplied by Michael Montenat, Stuart Sayger, Maan House, and Christian DiBari.

Look for these tales of Holiday Horror to drop in October and November of this year, respectively. Read Dougherty’s thoughts on the matter below:

“I’ve been having way too much fun working with Legendary and the rest of my team bringing the ancient legend of Krampus to the big screen, and I look forward to expanding the film’s dark Christmas mythology onto the comic page. And hopefully the fans who’ve been patiently waiting for Trick ‘R Treat 2 will enjoy this deeper peek into Sam’s world until he finally rises from the pumpkin patch once more. Happy Holidays.”

‘Archie Vs. Predator’ Is Every Bit As Strange (And Awesome) As It Sounds

Man...Riverdale has gotten ****ing weird.

Been seeing this advertised and wondering like heck how they will pull it off (I liked DarkHorse on Facebook). As an Archie fan from my teenage years (it was all about Veronica!) I am going to look for this at the Emerald City Con I am attending next weekend. And how can you get tired of this awesomeness??!!
