The Pacific Division Thread

Updates on the division throughout the year could be fun.

My thoughts so far:

Vegas: Seems the only way to beat EDM if you’re not the Panthers is to outscore them in a track meet. Vegas should be able to do that now. Grateful their defense and goaltending took a step back, but still class of the division.

Edmonton: I expected a slowish start but I also expected more goals from McDavid so far. The McDavid extension has to be a sigh of relief for a team tired from so much hockey. I expect big things next year (sadly). But not this year.

Seattle: Marginal team who made improvements at the margins, even though the Marchment trade was one of the best deals of the summer. I am surprised. But they also look to have regained that nasty, stingy style that’s a pain to play against. They’re less skilled than the Kings but play grittier. It looks ironically like the way Hiller actually wants the Kings to play if only he could coach.

Anaheim: I won’t be a believer until they sustain this level of play for half a season. They’re scoring at a good clip though, I admit it.

Vancouver: What I expected. Adequately competitive but not intimidating. 50/50 looking team to make the playoffs. Petterson is humiliating himself so far and vindicating Miller. I’m really watching him. Another season like last year’s and his contract will be regarded as one of the biggest albatrosses in the league.

Calgary: I didn’t believe in them and was shocked they did virtually nothing this offseason. But this is really really bad. Wolf calling out his teammates for not scoring is great drama, especially when they lost the very next game 5-3 (one empty net) and another game shortly after at 4-3. They scored more since he called them out. Trouble is he let in more too.

San Jose: Knew they’d be fun. Still didn’t expect playoffs. But seeing them the other night makes me think they could actually be closer than I thought. But wow that goaltender.

Pacific Div is definitely gonna be a lot tighter at the end of this season, I think. The Kings will need to stay on their toes and not slack off before the Olympic break!

These are my thoughts I guess.

Expected to be good - Vegas and Edmonton
Surprises so far - Anaheim and Seattle having a good start. And either I've been in a hole but I am surprised Calgary has started off this bad.

Thanks for starting this Clif! It be should be fun watching the division evolve as the year progresses.

So far, Vegas is still Vegas, no surprises there, and they will be tough to beat. Seattle's been a pleasant surprise, and I expect the Ducks to gain momentum as the season moves forward.

Shocking that Calgary has started off so poorly...but my big concern, of course, are the Edmonton Oliers. And regardless what happens this season, I do not want to face Edmonton again in the first round of the playoffs. Anything, and I mean any scenario but that.

I'm still fuming about that series. I went to the first Edmonton game and was riding high after that one. And I know I sound like a broken record, but damn, all QB had to do was chip the puck out of the zone and we probably take that series. I hope he's learned, but I'm not optimistic. I don't think he's a highly cerebral hockey player.

I can't wait to revisit this in 15 months when ANA + SJ are on 90-95 point paces. They both have the talent to build around and the pieces to make big moves. And EDM will be better next season as they add a goalkeeper and a couple more players to help McD out. Vegas going nowhere obviously...It's going to be a long 5-6 years.

Kings are in the worst spot of purgatory right now.

Pretty much agree with what the OP said. I will add:

Oilers have 2 young players that have pretty much zero experience. They are not as deep up front as years past.

Vancouver, is a question mark. The are past the drama of last year, which should be a good thing. They also had a number of players injured last year. They could make a push for the playoffs.

Ducks improved the team and have Q behind the bench.

Sharks are looking scary good (at times). They have a lot of cap space and (2) 1st round and 2nd round draft picks in this years draft. If they are close they could make some moves at the deadline. They beat the Devils last night 5-2, btw.

Calgary looks to be going nowhere.

For the west overall, there will be a of teams fighting for the wildcard spots. Going to be an interesting year.

Ducks and Sharks will be spanking us for 5-10 years in the next 0-2 years I think. When the only thing we got going for us as the oldest or 2nd oldest team is "hopefully resigining Kempe" I think we're in trouble.

They are both so staked it's ridiculous. Seattle is very very good with assets as well. We are 5-6 years (at least...) behind ANA / SJ / UTH / SEA / CHI...that's not to mention the perennials...

This whole contract saga with Kempe...don't think it's much of a saga...they are looking for a good trade. It sucks, but logically it makes the most sense.

I like Kempe in fact he's one of the only players on the team I do like but a trade is in the best interest long term (for assets of course), but I see a ridiculous contract coming in the hopes of barely making the first round for a few more years (if that).
