The Pacific Division Thread

I very much would like the Kings to acquire Pettersson, but not at that price. He is no where near the level of Eichel, and is currently on a long term deal that he is not living up to.

Maybe more in the lines of a 1st (top 10 protected), 2nd and a vet like Moore (salary offset) going back the other way (no salary retained).

Perhaps the Eichel deal format makes sense with 50% salary retained.

I think it would be necessary to add a prospect like Cihar and maybe one of the goalies not named Carter or George, but make VAN retain 1-2 million while we're at it. Or take on Ceci. Whichever works for them.

That was the price for a very damaged Eichel. At the time of the trade nobody was sure how he would respond to the neck surgery long term.

Pettersson does have a big contract but he’s still young and he’s a 3x 30 goal scorer. He’s .95 PPG over his career. He’s very valuable. I don’t see the Canucks retaining much if any of his salary. I do like the idea of sending Moore back though. That has the same effect as the Canucks retaining salary on EP.
I agree there were questions about Eichel's desired surgery and recovery, but most speculated that he would be back to health and full form once again. The question mark was more due to type of procedure never having been done on a hockey player before.

The thing that worries me about Pettersson is teammates seem to have beef with him. First it was Miller and then, apparently, Hughes. It also makes me wonder how he would handle the Kings style of play.

Below is pulled straight from a google search, so, granted, it should be taken with a grain of salt:

Reports indicate that Elias Pettersson was not at Quinn Hughes's farewell dinner
, seemingly confirming a growing distance between the two Vancouver Canucks stars due to Hughes' reported frustration with Pettersson's work ethic despite past closeness, a situation that culminated in Pettersson's absence from the send-off.

Key Details:
  • The Event: A going-away dinner for Quinn Hughes, attended by players like Brock Boeser, Tyler Myers, Conor Garland, and Filip Hronek.
  • Pettersson's Absence: Pettersson was notably absent, which sparked discussion given their past bond as young players.
  • Reason for Drift: Reports suggest Hughes became frustrated with Pettersson's off-season preparation and overall work ethic, leading to a significant rift despite Hughes' prior support for Pettersson.
  • Past Relationship: They were once close, with Hughes playing a big role in supporting Pettersson through tough times, but this relationship reportedly deteriorated.
In essence, Pettersson's non-attendance at the dinner served as a public indicator of the strained relationship between him and Hughes before Hughes' departure

I hadn’t heard about the Hughes rift. Very interesting. While the locker room is very much a concern I’ve heard that Kempe and Pettersson are pretty friendly as their wives are supposedly very close. Plus Adrian and Elias played on a line for Sweden at 4 Nations so there’s already some on-ice chemistry.

Maybe getting Elias out of that environment and into a locker room and playing on a line with a friend is what he needs to get back on track.

That's great info regarding the wives/friendship and agreed - having a fellow Swede and friend on the team (especially one which may be our next Captain) has to help. Likely a change in atmosphere changes things, but either way he's worth taking a chance on.

As you mentioned earlier in the tread - have a center core of Pettersson/Byfield/Turcotte would really catapult the team forward for (hopefully) years to come.

23 year old 2Cs are generally not available on the trade market. Remember it took acquiring Quinn Hughes for the Wild to give up Marco Rossi. Byfield and all his warts is better than Rossi. The Kings should not include Byfield in a trade for Pettersson.

Even if the plan is to eventually trade Byfield, he shouldn’t be used to acquire an older player on a very long term high cap hit contract.

If Vancouver is taking offers on Pettersson I bet it’s a move similar to the Jack Eichel trade. Vegas gave up Alex Tuch (established winger), Peyton Krebs (former mid-1st round pick) a 2nd and a 1st.

The Kings have Laf (Tuch), Greentree (Krebs) and a 2nd and 1st available.

Yes but Laff is not close to Tuch and Greentree is no Krebs

Goal scoring is not far off. And Laf is much much more physical than Tuch. Plus Laf comes with 3 more years of team control.

Krebs had a bit more hype because of his World Juniors performance but he was a 17th overall pick for a reason and Greentree’s offensive ceiling is higher than Krebs was.

If Vancouver prefers a Dman we’ve got a couple good ones in the OHL. If they want a goalie we’ve got 3 very good ones waiting to turn pro. Take their pick.

I think Pettersson is the perfect fit for the Kings.

Kings make a big trade for a center to replace Kopitar. One with some questions surrounding their current situation. I can see it now. After a dismal year next year the Kings dump him for a decent aging goaltender. It would be perfect, Darcy is signed through next season and the trade of Pettersson could land us a Darcy replacement. Perfect timing.

LA Kings Hockey!!!!!

Don’t forget the character issues.

Apparently Shane Wright is available - may be a good option for the Kings to look at as the cost would be much lower.

AI Overview:

Shane Wright - considered a good, developing young NHL center with high potential, often projected as a top-six forward due to his high-motor, two-way play. While not yet a superstar, as of January 2026, he has shown flashes of offensive talent, strong analytical metrics (leading Kraken in expected goals per 60), and has established himself as a reliable NHLer.
  • Development & Performance: After a tumultuous start, Wright showed promise in the 2024-25 season, recording 44 points in 79 games. As of late January 2026, he has 17 points in 49 games, showing solid, consistent performance.
  • Skill Set: Known for having no major flaws in his game, he is a smart, defensively responsible center.
  • Potential: He is considered to have a high ceiling, with some analysts viewing him as a potential future top-six or even a top-line center.
  • Current Status: He has faced challenges with inconsistent ice time and line combinations in Seattle, leading to speculation about a potential change in scenery to further his development.
He is a talented 22-year-old (as of January 2026) who is trending in a positive direction, though his ceiling as a top-tier NHL center is still being established

I would like Wright way more than Pettersson but I don’t think the cost would be “much lower.” That’s a good chip SEA has and as they refuse to rebuild they’d likely want roster players who can help them now in addition to a first round pick in a deep draft this year.

He’s only in his second year and still shows “potential.” Kakko was traded for an underwhelming package in his fifth season with the Rangers and his value had tanked despite being taken 2nd overall.

That's good insight - I would have thought his value would be much lower than Pettersson's but you may be right (age+contract, etc). If that's the case, I would opt for Pettersson.

Wright seems to have some attitude problems as well, but the positive is that he is young, hard working and badly wants to succeed. Given Seattle's offensive system seems almost as bad as the Kings, he's probably do well in a Kings uniform without much risk of dropoff post trade.

If the Kings picked up both Wright and Kakko that would be great haha :)

Well, I am not opposed to picking up Wright, but he is basically a 3rd line center right now and could become a 2nd line center down the road. He is 10th in scoring on the Kraken, and would be the same on the Kings, behind Armia and just ahead of Edmundson. He would be a perfect pickup if the Kings are going to start a rebuild. Not going to help this team a whole lot this year, especially considering the Kings would need to give up a good roster player(s) in the trade.

A big plus if this trade does go down is it would allow us all to stop complaining of QB's 40% FO win percentage. Wright's is worse at 37%.

Not sure the cost will be lower, talk is the Kraken would only move Wright in a package for a significant upgrade for their top 6. What do the Kings have to give up for Wright? Kempe? Fiala? QB?

Wright seems fine, but has he done more than QB or Turcotte as an NHL hockey player and as a center? His FO% is considerably worse than even Byfield's this season. Who will he be here? One of the three centers with potential but failing to meet the expectations? Might as well move Turc to 2C and call up Connors and hope for the best then...

If we pay up we should pay up for someone with decently established track record...

Beat me to it. 😬

What if he doesn't sign here and Elias isn't available anymore?
Oh well, move to the next name down the list.
Elias is a lazy 185 pound malcontent with a history of pissing people off and a 12 mil salary.
If you trade for him you make a hole on our roster elsewhere, and mortgage our future for that

Vancouver is going to demand QB or BC probably both.
The standings are totally bunched so the market is a sellers one and the prices will be at an all time high.
Elias is 185 pounds , lazy and pissed teammates off
