Well, both Sharks and Ducks had at least 6 years of suckage, so...5 years (+this one, likely) of no playoffs would be great if the Kings do indeed enter a proper, full-on rebuild.
 
Just another player that does appears to not want to come play in LA. So, many players do not want to play in LA. Turns out many Fans are starting to feel the same way about watching the team.

Unfortunately, that's the fault of Luc and the Kings' FO; especially the latter. When the organization creates a culture that is undesirable to any would-be free agent, especially the star-studded ones, this is the result. Until Luc is fired and the FO gets a major change in personnel, the Kings will sadly continue to be an unattractive team for FAs.

It would be a retooling trade.
That said, I'd move Byfield knowing that we'd need to get a new 2C to replace him. Either Q is dogging it to get traded or he's showing that he's not likely to grow into a 1C role. His ice time is up with Kopi out and Danault traded and he's not filling the role. Scoring is not up. Faceoff percentage is usually embarrassing.

23 year old 2Cs are generally not available on the trade market. Remember it took acquiring Quinn Hughes for the Wild to give up Marco Rossi. Byfield and all his warts is better than Rossi. The Kings should not include Byfield in a trade for Pettersson.

Even if the plan is to eventually trade Byfield, he shouldn’t be used to acquire an older player on a very long term high cap hit contract.

If Vancouver is taking offers on Pettersson I bet it’s a move similar to the Jack Eichel trade. Vegas gave up Alex Tuch (established winger), Peyton Krebs (former mid-1st round pick) a 2nd and a 1st.

The Kings have Laf (Tuch), Greentree (Krebs) and a 2nd and 1st available.

I have made my peace with Q’s ceiling as a 2C - but only if he learns how to take a faceoff. 1 for 15 is monstrously bad. It was a bit strange to hear Stoll praising how well Laffy has learned to take draws, but he noticeably did not include Q in that context.

At least Q still has the potential to be better than Lafreniere…

This is one of the reasons I support trading for Pettersson. Elias is a bonafide 1C. Far from elite but he’s effective.

Slotting Byfield into the 2C role seems to be the best long term fit for him. We saw something similar with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Former 1st overall pick who just never embraced the 1C role.

McDavid coming to town allowed RNH to slot back into a support role and he’s become a very effective player. Much more impactful than RNH as a disappointing 1C.
 
I just don’t think Q is center material, at all. Perhaps eventually he can grow into a strong fore-checking, first line winger option. You also saw how he blew the coverage on Miller last night on that second goal. Couple that with his inability to win face offs, and I’m not sure he’s even a 3C, as traditionally you bring guys like Stoll, who are face off specialists, for those spots.
 
Byfield is regressing on FO%, he peaked in 22-23 at 47.2% and has steadily declined every season. He's 40.7% so far this season, his worst showing if you exclude the 6 games he played in 20-21.

I suggest looking at the Top 20 scoring Centers and check out their FO percentage. I have a feeling you’ll be quite surprised. 47.2% is right in line with the majority of 1st line Centers believe it or not.

Except that FO number for Q was from 3 years ago. And that year he was a winger for most of the season and only took 108 draws. His FO numbers fell to 45.6% playing LW on Kopi’s line the following season. Last season when he became a full time center, Q posted a 44.2% in 942 draws. He is at 40% this season… and falling. However you look at it, it’s a bad trend line.

Faceoff numbers are just not that consequential if you’re doing other things effectively. The difference between 50% and 44.2% on 942 draws is 55 wins. That’s about 2 extra faceoff wins every 3 games.

All things considered sure I’ll take those 2 extra wins but again in the grand scheme of hockey it is way down the list of what’s needed from a Center 1, 2 or 3.
