Just Outstanding IPA for dinner in Troy Meadows!
 
Heading down to the San Diego area this weekend to finish off the last micro brewpubs that I haven't been to. Alpine Brewing, Ballast Point and maybe Oceanside Aleworks. Will make the mandatory Stone visit of course.

I was watching Modern Marvels last week and decided to give this beer a try.

His golden touch may have conferred fabulous wealth on King Midas, but he nearly starved to death when even his food and drink were converted into the precious metal. The well-known legend is based on an actual ruler of the ancient kingdom of Phrygia in central Turkey around 700 B.C. Under a huge mound at the capital of Gordion, a University of Pennsylvania Museum expedition in 1957 excavated an intact burial chamber which likely belonged to King Midas himself. The body of a 60-year-old male was laid out in state on a thick pile of purple and blue-dyed textiles inside a unique log coffin.

Most remarkably, the tomb held the largest Iron Age drinking set ever found--157 vessels, including a ram-headed and lion-headed situla--for preparing, serving, drinking and libating a special beverage at the funerary feast of the king. The secrets of the beverage were revealed by the new methods of Molecular Archaeology. Dr. Patrick McGovern of the Museum discovered that the residues inside the vessels belonged to a "Phrygian cocktail," which combined grape wine, barley beer and honey mead. Starting with the ancient chemical evidence, Dogfish Head Brewery "re-created" a marvelous golden elixir, truly touched by King Midas.

In layman's' terms they found a tomb they think belongs to King Midas and tested the residue found on some urns, determined it was beer and ran more tests to figure out the ingredients and brewed the beer.

This beer is very different from any other beer I have had. It is pretty sweet because of the honey. There is no yeast or hops in the beer. If you can appreciate a very good different beer, you'll dig it. If you need a really hoppy beer, you should pass.

It also runs about $15 for 4 of them.

It's 9.0% abv with only 20 ibu
 
Don't know if anyone else has posted this one (even if it has been posted it more then deserves another mention). "Lost Coast Great White Ale" (or just "Great White" as most people call it), is massivlely delicious and i highly recommend everyone try it. It's brewed in Eureka, Ca.

This was my first foray into German "Black Beer" territory. This is dark beer with a blond soul - it looks like a bock or stout, but is actually a lager. Not a heavy beer at all, it is an easy drinking brew, perfect for summer. It does have the sweet taste of chocolate and coffee that lingers after you take a drink, which is reminiscent of a dark beer, but it just doesn't have the same weight and body.

Overall, very nice. Available at your local Bev-Mo.

Speaking of dark colored German beers, Weltenburger's "Kloster Asam-Bock" is an outstanding doppelbock which can be found at Hollingshead in Orange. Highly recommended.

I finally got my hands on the Alaskan Stout and LOVED IT !!! You suggested it a while back and I finally saw it at BevMo on Friday so I got a 6'er. Very good call, dude !

Picked up a 6er myself. Glad you liked it.

Just tried Mad River's John Barleycorn BarleyWine. Great tasting Barley Wine that came in a 6 pack. Cypress Bev Mo marked it down to $9.99 for the 6 pack. Put it up with Lagunitas Gnarlywine as one if my favorite Barley Wines.
 
Samael's Ale from Avery's is unbelievably good. We had it during a tasting on Saturday night and it was by far the highlight. 14.90 % ABV so split it between a few buds !

I enjoyed Franziskaner's Dunkelweizen. I don't think it's rated very highly on BA, but I did enjoy it and would definitely get some again :)

Where did you try/buy it?

Try the two I recommended. I do like the Hofbrau better than the Warsteiner. You can get both @ Bevmo
 
I've had the Franziskaner. they're pretty good.

KJ, BevMo carries their stuff. I got a gift pack with a couple of 22 oz glasses in it last year.
 
KJ - what Beerman said. BevMo carries it, although the one I had was from the San Dimas Ranch Market.
 
Az: I tried the Sam Adams Summer Ale the other day. It sucks this year, you didn't just get a bad 6'er
