Booze The recommend-a-beer thread

I have a recommendation for a beer that is easy to drink and weighes in at 10.6% ABV. It's not the best beer you will ever have and will be a bit dull for hop-lovers. But at 10.6% it doesn't overpower you with an alcohol taste and is a darkish brown in color. Maybe I just have a special place for it on my palate because it is the beer served at the place I stay every year in Death Valley and it is quite cool to be out in the middle of nowhere with a strong beer keeping you company. You can find this beer at Whole Foods - Lobotomy Bock from Indian Wells Brewing. Try it if you want a lot of buzz in an easy to drink bock.

I have had the Lobotomy Bock. it is ok although the 10.6% was a shocker. after two of those, I did have a bit of a trouble getting up from the chair.

Spring 2009 Release of this is out in stores. Picked up a few and enjoyed one last night. Yummy!

Stone Imperial Russian Stout 2009.

Had my first one last night.

OUT-FREAKING-STANDING!!!

I think I'm in love.

I had a 2008 recently and it was even better.

I would second this. I'm not big on letting beers age. I prefer bold n hoppy balls to my beer, but the Stone IRS is an exception to my preference in that regard. For some reason, a year of aging does wonders to it.

Smithwick's Irish Ale

been having this all week. I had been overlooking this beer for a long while. so, one day this weekend, I decided to grab a 6er.

so far, so good.

I had a couple new beers yesterday:

Hofbrau Oktoberfest - I was surprised how much lighter in color and taste it was to their dunkel. More of an amber hue to it and a lighter taste than I was expecting. The only other Octoberfest beer I've had was a SA so I was expecting something a bit more intense in flavor. Still, for a nice beer with some "drinkability" I enjoyed it. It paired very well with a mild cigar I was smoking (Padilla Habana Torpedo) as neither overshadowed the other.

Moylans Dry Irish Stout - Almost pitch black in color. Not as creamy as Guinness but with a much more robust flavor. It had an intriguing "berry" hint to it which I found pleasant. Not particularly strong at 5% but I was very pleased with this bottle. Paired with a stronger Partagas Black Label Bravo I got an aftertaste of coffee, caramel, and very delicious dark chocolate.

Mountain High IPA, brought to you by Mt. Shasta Brewery, well known for their successful court battle over the Weed label:

MSBC is in Weed, CA, of course.

and this IPA is pretty good. remember, there is stuff at the bottom. so, it is best poured in a glass, carefully.

from Vendome Liquor in Toluca Lake.

That's timing for you! I just bought a bottle of that today! Beerman, Vendome in Toluca has it, as well as some Stone IRS (whatever I left behind!)

I let you guys know how it goes tomorrow!

Looks very much in color of the second photo. Bills itself as a "Bavarian Lager." Very much light tasting and almost hefeweisen in taste. Would recommend. I got it at a Fred Meyer store, which is much like a Pavilions/Target cross store here in Seattle. They have a very good selection of beers there if anyone ever visits Seattle.

I found the last Rauchbier Maerzen at Vendome. also got the Urbock. we'll see how either one goes tonight.

Had the Schlenkerla Rauchbier Marzen yesterday. I remember seeing this beer profiled on an old episode of "The Thirsty Traveler" so when I saw it here locally I wanted to give it a go. First off, you'd better like smoke if you get this beer! Just smelling it from the bottle was like sticking your head in a fire pit! The taste was surprisingly smooth! I was expecting to try to swallow a mouthful of bitter rusty nails but instead the beer was creamy, smokey, and well balanced in my opinion. Whether it tastes of bacon, I don't think so, but I did get some hickory-ish flavor. It was akin to drinking a barbecue, which for some reason, I really enjoyed!

I had this paired with a nice cigar and both left me feeling quite pleased. I'll definitely be getting this again. I want to try the Urbock next time. The sales guy there said the Marzen was the smokier of the two.

I am having this Marzen beer right now. the aroma DOES give off a smoky character. and at the first sip,

wow. it is creamy and has a distinctive hickory flavor, AND I did sense the bacon. kinda like there's bacon fat in the beer. but oh boy, that is a great beer.

unholy, you and I are going to have to butt heads over this one when they restock it.
