The Star Wars thread

Will be seeing the movie in 3 1/2 hours.

Expectations are low to minimal. My fear is that they'll force things (no pun intended) and it'll feel like they tried to please the fans too hard so that nothing will be pleasing.

Will report back tomorrow.

I thought it was good, not great though my wife and daughters felt it was the best of the new trilogy. It did feel a bit forced and JJ went all in on the fan servicing. Look forward to discussing it after the first of the year when we can let the spoilers fly.

We saw it last night and loved it. I was not a big fan of the last two movies - although I did like the Kylo and Rey characters - but loved this one.

I was anticipating how much this one will suck that I didn't see it on opening night... It ends my streak at 8 opening nights... I'll see it on New Year's day though...and hope the ringing in my ears stood then...

It was "better" than the Last Jedi, so there's that.

In the first act JJ is tying himself in knots to retcon The Last Jedi, but it could have been much worse.

So much was wasted in this current trilogy due to no cohesive storyline or plan. That's Kathleen Kennedy's fault.

JJ salvaged the best he could considering he had very little to work with.

There is a lot of fan service, which is nice...meanwhile the plot is "meh".

This new trilogy continues to prove one thing: The best "new" Star Wars film is unarguably "Rogue One". All others pale in comparison.

The Skywalker story arc ended up being a botched messed, it's time to move on and bring new life into the Star Wars Universe.

I thought it was better than I was expecting, so that was good.

The breakneck pacing at the start didn't leave a lot of time be be as, "Wait. What?" as you might have been otherwise.

I'm glad a few things were dropped into the general consciousness before the movie opened, otherwise there would have been MAJOR "Wait WHAT???" moments for me.

Overall, my opinion of this movie, and this trilogy as a whole, came down to, "Okay. Fine." The nice thing is that we have a little bit of time to settle into the end of this series, then we get to hit the excitement reset button for the finale of "The Mandalorian" coming up on Friday.

Speaking of which, I'm way more excited about the Disney+ shows coming up than any potential movie projects that've been floated. Especially in light of what "The Mandalorian" has been doing.

"Obi-Wan," "Cassian Andor," and "Mandalorian S2" are already in the works. And I read somewhere that there may be another secret project based on Doctor Aphra going on over there.

So....not that much of a spoiler alert but...

Did anyone think at the end "so yeah they just mirrored avengers: endgame" a bit?

One of the biggest issues I have it the opening crawl....it was like, "hey, look who's back" with little explanation. They really needed to have 30 minutes at the start to introduce the character. I do agree with most of what you said, they really failed to build a cohesive story due to lack of planning upfront. JJ had the unenviable task of trying to pull everything to closure.

The opening crawl read like some p*ss poor fan fiction.

I kept wondering if the crawl was that bad, what were the rejected early drafts like!?!??!!?

Those forced cutting room floor Lea scenes were really bad, especially the one with the pilot, that was like high school sketch theater bad.

Saw it, enjoyed it. Jj got it back to its safe place of cheap thrills and awe moments. Story wasn't so convoluted and while they minorly had a time element to explain the pace it wasn't an overarching theme this time. Won't watch it again in theater but I'll buy the trilogy now and will watch on plane.

I did actually watch it a second time and honestly enjoyed it quite a bit more. Things just flowed better and I picked up on a few things I missed first viewing.

And just like THAT, "The Mandalorian" has me f***in' PSYCHED about Star Wars again!

It has me callin' back some stuff from the older movies, had me re-diggin' into the animated stuff, and has me specifically looking forward to TWO upcoming Disney+ shows even MORE!

So glad this came after the movie, which, again, wasn't bad for me. But hot DAMN was this season so much better.

I need to check out the episode times so I can do a re-watch on New Year's Eve.

Saw Rise of...
And I am torn over it.
Is ok/good enough/safe going to be the new standard for these movies? Did Last Jedi/Solo force Disney to stop trying to make something SPECIAL, and just have them dotting the i's and bringing it home safe?
I still can't decide whether it worked. A few surprises, but nothing to upend the property and create jaw dropping holy s_ _t moments.
And, you could tear this movie apart once you start asking questions. Is STAR WARS too big to really do anything more than satisfy?
I dunno. I may have liked it more if not for Mandalorian. Which, although familiar, is just something entirely different. And that just underlines how much the movie franchise has spun its wheels, basically reskinning the trilogy for a new generation. Maybe Star Wars has no place for a 53 year old man who grew up on the original trilogy? Maybe these new movies should be left to the new generation. I felt increasingly disconnected as my Star Wars characters took a bow, then...passed on. Maybe that's the lesson. The ultimate OK BOOMER moment.

I just read today that JJ and the co-writer stated that many of the Rose scenes had to be cut because they involved Leia and just didn't look good. Imagine how bad those had to be given the clear challenges you could see with the ones they used. That being said, I think the Leia storyline (with Kylo) was pretty important to the movie so I can overlook this.
