I thought it was better than the first two films in the trilogy, much better than the last one, which was just dreadful, but the decision to bring back a dead villain without even explaining how he "survived" was pretty baffling. That is, until you realize that while they were willing to create original new characters, they weren't willing to create a truly original story.

From the beginning I have preferred what Mando calls him, "the Kid." Seemed to fit in the old west theming of the show ...
I'm not sure anyone should compare the mandalorian to the trilogy in awe inspired tones... I mean it's a serial western. It's not offering anything remotely different than repackaged goods and a baby Yoda. Its absolutely relying on audience leaps of faith (lava boat ferry man was convenient, right up there with Homer complaing about Knight boat). It's a cool show obsfucating the fact that fifty years ago we all would have known that John Wayne or Clint Eastwood was really under the helmet. It's still a cool show and I'm enjoying the hell out of it but I'm coming into all of this knowing I'm extremely unlikely to have something emotionally attach to me as I would've in my formative years.

The original trilogy was just re-packaged Western, Samurai movie, and old-timey serial cartoon like Flash Gordon. Which is, yeah, pretty much what "The Mandalorian" is. Which is exactly why the show feels like Star Wars.
And who's obfuscating the fact that the title character is a version of Clint Eastwood? The show is mostly a Spaghetti Western and it leans hard into that story type. He might as well be wearing an old worn-out poncho. But, again, that's partially why it's so good.
Meanwhile, you have the big movies that miss the mark, mostly, I think, because they try to be a "Star Wars" movie instead trying to be the things that the original movies were trying to be. They're trying to make a copy of a copy.
It's like taking a Coke, making a Pepsi, and then trying to make another Pepsi but ending up with Shasta or RC.
As for emotional resonance, anyone trying to make the same type of emotional connection 40+ years after the original connection was made is running a fool's errand.
What "The Mandolorian" does do is remind me of what I connected to all those years ago when I first saw these stories, through its content (AAAAAAALLLLLLL the easter eggs!) and its style. And it endears itself to me by at once reviving that connection and adding something new to it.
It's like a adding spoiler on a car. I know the spoiler ain't the car. I don't need the spoiler for the car to work. I do need the car for the spoiler to be useful in any way. But look how cool my old car looks now with its new bad-ass spoiler!!!
