The Star Wars thread

I used to love Star Wars.

Then in my teens Lucas released the New Edition versions.

Then I liked Star Wars.

Then in my twenties the prequels came out.

Then I was indifferent to Star Wars.

Then in my thirties Disney bought Star Wars and is planning a never ending barrage of Star Wars.

Now I hate Star Wars.

**** you Star Wars... **** you.

Get over it!

I admire your ability for forgiveness...it's commendable in the face of the sequels, it really is.

Take out Binks, young Anakin, older Anakin, a lot of the writing, a lot of the acting, the entire "love" story, the motivation for Anakin going to the dark-side, and (I'm sure I'm forgetting something) and the "pre-quels" aren't that bad.

Binks' bite was already WAY overblown, even before the movie came out. his screen time diminishes significantly with each film, and his presence never bothered me.

and in regards to everything else not George Lucas is an awful director, the choices of Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen were bad, bad, BAD! but, Luke was a whiny bitch too though, so...

but if you really try and watch all 6 flicks without prejudice, Phantom is only 2nd to ANH in terms of pacing.

Rumor: Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher Might Return for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII | Collider

Before we get too far into this, it’s important to note that at this point nobody knows anything, so take the following rumor with the biggest heap of salt possible. That being said, a report at Showbiz 411 claims that Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher will be reprising their roles as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia. Moreover, the story apparently revolves around the children of the original trilogy’s main characters, as their spawn has been tapped as the new trilogy’s protagonists.

Dunno. Isn't restarting the franchise best served by starting with NO ties to the original. To piggyback them invites comparison, which won't help(in the case of the original trilogy) or can't hurt in the least(as far as the 'prequels'). I get it...bringing back cornerstones guarantees more toy sales, fast food tie ins, etc...but isn't it time someone actually put the cart BEFORE the merchandising horse? If the movies are good, all that other stuff will follow. Even the most terribly jaded SW fan would love to love the franchise again.

I don't know. Callbacks always seem to be nice when getting something jump-started. Even if it's just for nostalgia, having something familiar is entertaining as long as it isn't the main point/focus. I have a feeling they're going to be passing the torch more or less in this first one. Figure that the second one will be more independent if only because you know we're going to get the introduction of new characters and villains in these other universe movies. Let the first film get things moving with something the audience can relate to while, at the same time, being fresh.

So I watched the Blurays of the old trilogy and I know I'm hardly going out on a limb here but man those movies are plain fun to watch. Halfway through Return of the Jedi I remembered they had added screams of "NOOOO" by Vader as he saves Luke. I was dreading that moment for the rest of the film and it was as awful as I thought. UGH! The other changes didn't bother me much though. It had been a good five-six year or something since I last saw the trilogy and it was a blast. And I was sort of surprised how "short" the movies were, they all clocked in at a hair over 2 hours. Nowadays I'm expecting movies like these to be 2? hours at the minimum, not having to sit those extra 20 minutes is kinda nice.

On the one hand, it's not impossible to do a cinematic passing of the torch movie or as part of a movie, but on the other hand I can't think of a single instance where it worked well previously. Hmm.

true, but i DID like Abrams' Spock Prime. i think the important thing to remember here is that i think we're all kind of apprehensive because we're viewing it with Lucas colored lenses... he ain't at the helm anymore, which will (hopefully) reduce the corn factor by an order of magnitude.

i think the only real problem is Harrison... and what a joke he's become

How so? I mean he's a grumpy old man and all and he has made a lot of bad movies but how is his star any more tarnished than Mark Hamill or Carrie Fisher's? It was fun to see him @ SDCC 2(?) years ago for Cowboys and Aliens and I think after semi-retirement he kinda gets it now. Why the 'joke' handle?
