The Trade Deadline Thread

Last year he showed good positioning and was a strong passer. I haven’t noticed much good or bad from him this go-around. Wish he’d hit more but doesn’t seem to be in his dna. With a guy his size I always want to see a long stick. I am forever pining for someone to play like Willie Mitchell.
I've been impressed by him simply because he hasn't been visible out there - and that is considering he has matched up against some top forwards.

Totally agree on the hits part though. He has 5 hits in 9 games vs a player like Englund who has 145 hits in 60 games.

Willie Mitchell was the key piece missing in 2012-13. I think had he been playing that season, regardless of the other injuries the team suffered, the Kings would have won the Cup 3 years in a row. Wish we had a player like him.

Vegas already improving their roster.

Anthony Mantha was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights by the Washington Capitals on Tuesday for a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. 50% salary retained by the caps.

The 29-year-old forward has 34 points (20 goals, 14 assists) in 56 games this season
Vegas always finds a way to get better at the deadline and then have everyone healthy for the playoffs. Their GM has done an outstanding job managing their roster and making improvements.

Couldn't we theoretically pay another team a pick to take retention on a new deal for Roy? Let's say he signs for 5.5M.x 3. Pay a third for 50% retained? NJD just did it for Tanev

Say it with me…:.

Apparently the NHL monitors it very close so while they've perfected it, they don't appear to be breaking any rules. It's just odd that it doesn't happen regularly with more times like it does with Vegas.

Just wish they would get caught, slapped, fined, lose picks, forfeit games.

If they won’t do that, then it should be open season and we should be doing the same.
Honestly, the solution is that teams should be cap compliant during the playoffs as well.

most GMs are lawyers and lawyers are masters at exploiting loopholes

Then why don't more teams do it? The Vegas leadership could teach a class on how to do this year after year.
Vegas learned from Tampa

With a little luck along the way, general manager Julien BriseBois made all the right moves to position his team for consecutive championships. Exploiting every loophole and unafraid to give up assets to shed salary and make the money work, he went all in and it paid off.
