The Trade Deadline Thread

Birdman

TEAM LGK
How do we clear cap space, though? I think a more relevant line of discussion is, who on this roster would we be willing to send back the other way to clear the needed cap space? Who can we even offload?

I definitely see a need for a large, rugged 3rd pairing defender, as I like Clarke’s/Spence’s skill set, but I don’t think either has the physicality yet to stand up to the rigors of playoff hockey. We need way more snarl on defense.

I love Blaze Lizottes hustle, but if AZ ends up outside the race, Bjugstad’s size and face off acumen would be -very- attractive for 4th line center, PK and crucial face offs, although looking at his % doesn’t seem great. I seem to recall him dominating us in the dot in that playoff series last year though. His cap hit of 2.1mill is likely prohibitive, and he’s scoring at a great clip so far this year, so AZ’s ask will be high.

Lastly, if Talbot truly has come back down to earth for the duration, we will need definitely need goaltending help..

Capfriendly says we have $2M in deadline camp space, and getting another team to eat half the cap hit only requires additional picks/prospects

And this will persist, even with Arvy coming back and finishing out the regular season with us? I thought I understood LTIR(and how to bank cap space), but a conversation and one of these threads a month back made me think otherwise.

Would love to have bjugstad, he is signed for another yr. So prob not gonna be readily avail. Agree that we can use some physicality on the back end. Clarke is not ready.

I agree with Bird, especially about needing more goaltending. I credit Dave with the win on Saturday.
This team is only going to go as far as the goaltending takes us.

Call me crazy, but I can't help but look at DD's massive salary and think that if we could find the right package that Rob would pull the trigger. I'm not sure if there is a team out there with the cap space and assets to make that happen, but we sure could take a lot back in exchange for one player...

I mean, I'd hate to see D go, and I am not necessarily advocating for it, but it would be a huge move.

I don't think speed is the most important thing in a D-Man.
Who said it was? In todays game having a mobile defense is a big plus. Englund has played pretty well out there for the most part. However, he gets burned a lot due to his lack of quickness. Yes, his fists and reach are nice to have in the lineup, but at what cost?

What about defense? Englund, while doing a decent job is just to slow at times.
I don’t notice Englund being out of position all that often. Perhaps it’s just the lack of time on ice, but i tend to notice far more positive with him than negative. You can be certain that opponents will be far more bold against us without him. His presence on our roster is likely the only thing keeping 1/3 of a team like Edmonton’s roster from running absolutely amok.

Furthermore, I don’t think either spence or Clarke are extremely fleet of foot either. Ive noticed Spence get burned to the outside more often than Englund, due to both lack of size AND foot speed.

Like I said, I think he does a good job out there. It is just that he can be slow and a pylon when on D. The faster teams expose this, especially when the Kings are on the road. At home is is protected pretty well due to line change matchups. It also would be great if the 3rd pair LHD could move the puck up the ice a little bit better. Again, Englund is decent at this for his size. To get by Vegas and the Oilers the KIngs D has got to do a better job of getting to the puck and getting it out of the zone.

Strategically, I would always rather carry a tough guy winger on the 4th line, since it’s way easier to bury him on the depth chart in terms of ice time. Hiding a defender who lacks ability in exchange for toughness is always more difficult, in my opinion. Especially if sitting in the box for five plus ten. It taxes the defense far more than it taxes your forward rotation. It is what it is though, and I also like having a defender who will throw down. I suppose the thing that strikes me most is that Englund has thrown the craziest open ice hits I’ve seen in years, and a guy who lacks foot speed or agility definitely cannot drop the boom like that so easily. He’s really caught some of the opposition players offguard in a bad way, which causes me to read his skating ability different from the way you see it.

It is a combo of his foot speed, but also just overall mobility. Again, he is not bad for a big lanky D, but which of the past cup winning teams had a D like that on the back end. During the Kings losing streak they were hemmed in their zone a lot. Being quick to get the puck out is pretty important IMO. I am not saying he is horrible. But, in order for this team to be a contender for the cup, it could be easier with an upgrade on the 3rd pairing LHD. That is all I am saying.
