The Trade Deadline Thread

Doughty is NOT an elite d-man. He is very good, but he has -- and always has had -- flaws in his game, not the least of which are mental. At this point in his career, not worth $11M. Maybe $7.5, $8.0, if you add in his fan appeal.
Seldom are players towards the end of the contract worth what you are paying them at the beginning. Erik Karlsson anyone?

It's the nature of every sport.

Did I want them to pay him or Kopi what they got, no, but there was no way they were going to let them walk nor as a fan did I want them to walk.

Unfortunately, I think we all knew nothing was going to happen, our cap situation will not allow it. I absolutely agree DD is no longer an $11 million a year player, yes, he is having a very nice season, but his salary is not beneficial to this team. Do I want to see him in another team's uniform, absolutely NOT, but for this team to get back some flexibility we must ask him to restructure his current deal and look at other deals as well, we need the flexibility to get a top goalie, to add with Portillo. I was disappointed to see us not claim Bjornfot back, letting him go to Florida. I would have liked to see a possible deal earlier in the with Bjornfot and maybe another piece for Philip Broberg, when Edmonton was willing to move him. He is a Left shooting D. Could have been a change of scenery for both.

I think the discussion of DD salary is very misguided. He is not being paid for the player he is, he is being paid for the Stanley Cups that he has brought to the City. Just Like Kopitar and Brown and Quick. They were paid for future performance they were paid for the Cups they earned.

And I am sorry, but no self-respecting player is gonna fake a lacerated spleen for LTIR time. How do you even have that conversation with the man? We want to put you on LTIR so we can cheat and put ourselves in a better position to win a Cup cause we don't think you on the ice can get it done. Really?

He's being paid exactly what he should be for his current production. He's a better hockey player NOW than 90% of the D-men that make more money than Drew does (Hamilton, Jones, Karlsson, Nurse, Pietrangelo, Sergachev). He's +11, 14th in points, and #1 in TOI and a penalty killer for the #1 unit in the NHL.

75% of the guys above him on points are either minus players (+/-), or play in the East. If Drew played on Toronto / Florida / TB / NYR he'd have 10-12 more points EASILY, and be top 5 in points in the league. Would that make him "worth" it? You need to look at the context of the King's system.

He is still elite and on a fair contract. It's a 3 year 30 million (okay, 33...) dollar deal after this year. If he was a free agent there would be at least a dozen teams making moves to fit Drew in their squad at that number, what does that tell you?
