What are you reading? What was the last book you enjoyed?

Actually, I know very little about John Connoly. I started to read said book as a result of a recommendation. ;)
 
Currently about 700 pages into this

I am enjoying it quite a bit, as a friend who shares my George RR Martin, SM Stirling and Harry Turtledove love.
Lots and lots of details about cathedral building in the early 12th century.

Just started. Big fan of the Dragonlance series and Raistlin is a very interesting character, no idea why it took me this long to get this.
 
I finished Nocturnes and really enjoyed it. Pretty creepy stories something akin to scary bed time stories for adults.

Oh, and I also read this.

Really enjoyed it. Weird story about a teen who gets a human version of mad cow disease and seeks out one Doctor X for a cure. Strange stuff along the way which may or may not be hallucinations like an angel, talking gnome, fire giants, this and that.

The Passing of the Dragon Mistress of Pern, Anne McCaffrey | Geeks of Doom

Author Anne McCaffrey, best known for her Dragonriders of Pern series, died on Monday at her home in Ireland after suffering a stroke. She was 85.

McCaffrey, who was born in Cambridge, MA. and moved to Ireland in 1970, was an iconic writer in the science fiction and fantasy fields. She was also one of the first fantasy writers I ever read. Her original Dragonriders of Pern trilogy helped establish my love for the genre. She is very deserving of the honor of being the first woman to be awarded a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award. My favorite of her books, The White Dragon, was also the first scifi novel written by a woman to make the New York Times Bestseller list (1978).



She began writing in the 1950s and kept writing into the 21st century. Almost a hundred books were penned by this wonderful author. And while many were written with other folks, the vast majority were solely hers. I don?t think I ever walked into a bookstore without seeing a ton of her books on the shelf. Heck, in my bookstore, no less than thirty titles were in stock at any given time. Her popularity never really waned, it?s amazing to see someone hold their own for that many years. Her son, Todd, began writing with her several years back and has even written a few Pern novels without her.

Her writings were very instrumental in helping to grow the field of fantasy over the last few decades. What was once a very small field is now a major section in every bookstore the world over. Her tales are as unique as she was and will undoubtedly remain classics for generations. While I cannot claim to have read even half of what she wrote, I can honestly say that I enjoyed every single one I ever picked up.

Rest In Peace, Anne McCaffrey?you impacted thousands and thousands of readers from all walks of life. I?m sad that I never got to meet you, but I will treasure your stories forever.

2 biographies by absolute Rock Gods that I have by my bedside, as soon as I finish Game of Thrones book 2, I am going to devour these.

Hey JD, I saw the Duff McKagan bio at Target in all places and I am tempted to read it. ;)
 
Akshully you should...if you like really honest stories. Painfully honest.

And, shame on you. Glenn Hughes is THE VOICE OF ROCK. See Burn/Deep Purple, Seventh Star/Black Sabbath, Stormbringer/Deep Purple, numerous solo albums, and Black Country Communion 1 & 2. He was Dio's consensus pick for greatest rock voice ever!!!!!!!
 
Before my time, I guess. The only Deep Purple that I've paid attention was the stuff that my dad listened to, and like some people of his generation, he stopped listening to the band when Gilliam left. Hahaha!

Anyways, I like learning something each day. ;)
 
Well, Glenn has had a long and storied battle with demons, so if you like a great rock story...this'll be up yer alley. And seriously...dude has the voice of an ANGEL. Makes me weep even thinking about it. Listen to some of his stuff...that Seventh Star album...man that has so many personal memories for me. So raw, so beautiful...aw crap, now I'm all verklempt. Thanks.
 
Finally finished Feast for Crows. Definitely not as good as the previous books. It dragged for a while but did get better towards the end.

I also just finished First Lords Fury. This series really became one of my favorites. I think Jim Butcher is my new favorite author. I finally picked up Changes so i am looking forward to getting back into the Dresden books.

yea feast for crows was really boring... took 900 pages out of a ~950 page book for anything really compelling to happen. i have a little over 100 pages left in Joe Abercrombie's Last Argument of Kings... book is slow (and we moved right in the middle of reading so im slowly getting back into my reading routine) and so far its not as good as the previous 2 in the series. then im hopping on Full Moon (dresden files book 2) for some fun reading
 
I don't know why the Game of Thrones books seem to be taking me so long to read. Started the second one, I think, a month ago. It's not bad at all(neither was the first) I just can't breeze through them like I do with any other books.

I started to read this and couldn't put it down and finished it. Pretty good book that tells the usual chronicle of the Superhero genre, but with enough of Morrison's twist to make it unique.

Heard a lot from a friend about the Wheel of Time series so I thought I would get started. Love this first book. SImilar to Lord of The Rings in that there's a quest a dark force out there and this world with different creatures. Also I see some similarities to the Dark Tower series as well. Getting the 2nd book from the library on Saturday and cannot wait.
