And I got past the first book in the Sandman Slim series, Book 2 (Kill The Dead) was yonks better. And #3 Aloha From Hell is even better. these come in nice paperback sized hardcovers which are a real treat. Not too heavy to hold, jayzus the last King book I read I didn't have the 'couldn't put it down' option. More like 'had to put it down'...I know...Kindle...yeah yeah. I am a physical copy guy, I still buy cds. But yeah Richard Kadrey has created a bunch of cool characters and mixed in sex, drugs, rock and roll and heavy theological fantasy. As a lapsed Catholic I am a fiend for fallen angels. If you like Dresden/the Nightside series, this is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I've read a TON of these kind of books and almost listed this one when I read it last fall but I actually liked "Kill the Dead" quite a bit more.

I've also been slowly making my way through Dresden and Green in order for years simply because I enjoy the central characters so much. Green is more hit and miss as the series go on but I still love both.

If you are ever looking for or wondering about a similar author, let me know. There are even some independent authors on Amazon that are really good.

Just finished Enders Game. Very much enjoyed it but I knew there had to be a bugger connection at the end with the "tele-communication" I really look forward to the movie and Harrison Ford as Graff.

So a avid reader and eccentric friend recommended this series to me. Sounds good and now that you recommended I may have to buy from iBooks (I actually have the sample in my iBooks library) ...

The friend also recommended other interesting titles: "I am NOT a Serial Killer" by Dan Wells and "Al's All Fright Diner" by A. lee Martinez and for pure inane fun "Lamb" by Christpher Moore who is quite irreverent.
 
While looking for something to read, my eleven year old caoxed me into starting the Lemony Snicket"s series, A Series of Unfortunate Events. I just finished the second one, they are definitely quick reads. I find myself liking the books more then I should. I guess they are geared towards kids but I find they are pretty funny. I don't think I can go thirteen straight books without something else so I am going to start Life of Pi. Although this isn't really my type of book (love horror) my 15 year old just read it and recommended it to me so I will start that tonight.

Finished it quickly. It's a fast read. Very entertaining but also very uneven. The overarching story is a bit muddled, and it has an episodic feel, which, it turns out, is to be expected, since it started as a series of articles, IIRC. Overall, I liked it a lot despite its flaws, enough to order the follow-up, though I haven't started reading that yet.

BTW, I saw the movie prior to reading the book, and reading the book actually enhanced my enjoyment of the movie. I have a friend who read the book first, and he was disappointed by the movie. However, I suspect that even if I'd read the book first, I'd still have enjoyed both and may have liked the movie even more on first viewing.
 


Ok. I have been chided on my 'poetic waxing' when I love something ridiculously. Well, this here is gonna be a wax attack of the highest order. I will put this out there...BEST BOOK I HAVE DEVOURED IN A REALLLLLLLLLLLLY LONG TIME. Joe Hill. Heart-Shaped Box...nice. Horns...tight little number. YET, I always felt that, in trying to NOT sound like his pops, he came off stilted and held back. Like the engine was BEGGING to be let RAWK!!!!. Well...Nos4A2...****ING KILLS IT. It's Stephen King 2.0, and I mean that in the most complimentary way imaginable. This is like a prime King book...but with a difference. Papa King always had flawed heroes. But they were basically good folks who had quirks. Not Hill's characters. ****ed up damaged folks who, just once, want to find it in themselves to do the right thing. And he doesn't shy away like pops does. Bad stuff happens...not hinted at...and terrible folks do terrible things. Is this STAND type stuff? No. That and IT are probably the high water mark period. But it sure is Talisman good. Matter of fact, I was reminded of that book the most when I read this. ok, so does he stick the landing, or does he go all 'it was a giant space spider' at the end you ask. Glad to say, the ending is sad AND satisfying. Actually had tears in my eyes. Man, I had such a hard time putting this book down and I found myself thinking about it when I wasn't reading it. No drag in the middle...nice little Hershey Kisses to King's world(yeah...Derry)...a really nice 'turn it on it's ear' use of King's trick of foretelling a characters doom before it happens...so many things...

I LOVE THIS BOOK and cannot recommend it highly enough. This is why you pick up a book...to be transported...immersed...and to come out of the shorter way tunnel(trust me, if you read it...you will get that) on the right side of things. Book of the Year without a doubt. BUY BUY BUY!!!!

Sorry to hear that you didn't like it.

Seriously, I was going to hold off on this because I have a few books waiting in the wings but your review may have pushed it to the front.

Christ...you read a book, that forces you to MAKE time for it(Nos4A2) and you don't have another lined up...and you find yourself actually working at work, instead of filling time to justify sitting yer ass down with a good book. Gotta get this sorted out sharpish. Trying to read Robert R. McCammon's THE FIVE, so far it ain't grabbing me.
