Who will be put thru waivers?

Just to get Clarke on the roster (full time), they have to expose 2 players to waivers. Currently, that would appear to be a combination of Moverare, Andersson, and JAD. I suppose they could potentially decide to expose a guy like Lemeuix and hope his cap hit scares off any potential suitors, but he does feel like he's a step above the three previous mentions. There's also the option of waiving Walker and hoping nobody claims him. But again, that doesn't seem likely to me given his status on the team. If you expose Moverare, you wind up having a rotating cast of Edler/Walker/Clarke/Durzi sitting on any given night. Edler is likely to sit some games in my opinion, and in fact i think i saw some discussion somewhere that that might even be the expectation on back to back nights or particularly grueling stretches of games. But if you lose Moverare, then you are kind of left with Bjornfot as the only guy left who plays the left naturally if you lose somebody to injury. So, if you expose JAD and Andersson, you most likely lose slightly better quality assets, as i'd assume somebody will claim them. Fortunately, you have Fagemo who looked decent in camp. And you maybe have Turcotte when he gets healthy and up to speed. And you have Kupari. However, none of those guys can actually play/practice with the team unless there's an injury. There's a lot here, none of it ideal, to fit Clarke in. Ideally, you would want to make a trade. And ideally, that would be two defensemen. Likely Durzi and walker. Or you trade Durzi and still possibly end up waiving one of JAD/Andersson/Moverare.

That's a lot for Blake to juggle. But I agree with you that Durzi currently looks like the odd man out, at least as a trade piece. Moverare would likely fall below Durzi as somebody you'd be willing to simply lose to waivers. Arvidsson being injured buys the Kings some time, but at most that's 9 games to make the decision, and it sort of appears Arvidsson could be back before then, but I can't imagine they'll rush him given all this.

You?d think Blake could have packaged Durzi and JAD for a decent LD this summer but maybe a trade wasn?t there. And it?s not hindsight 20/20 here, the writing was already on the wall well before camp.

i do agree about the need to convert our surplus into an area of need, but the one thing im not sure they expected was just how well Clarke would be doing in camp. He isnt makar, but he's certainly looked good. And the inability to go play in the AHL is a real problem because that would be the ideal solution right now. I had suggested in an earlier thread that he'd still be able to work on his game in the OHL, but he's definitely shown that to be mostly a waste of time.

Ha oh I remember that comment - it was on a thread I started. You were one of several people who put my mind at ease that the OHL wouldn’t be a waste of Clarke’s time. What a difference 5 preseason games make for us!

Regardless of Clarke, Spence and a returning Walker were enough for Blake to cash in on Durzi. I’m grateful for his approach in really wanting to be sure of what he’s got before making moves, but sometimes you gotta put your cards down first.

its still maybe a bit difficult to assess, but his defensive deficiencies so far dont look as bad as maybe we were lead to believe. I hadnt had much time to see him play barring some highlights and small single play analysis, but the book was that he needed to improve a fair amount on the defensive reads and stuff. He's not perfect, and im sure we'll have a better read in actual NHL games, but it does feel like he's shown enough defensive acumen that he could hang in a sheltered role here. But his drive and offensive skills look to be top notch. He certainly wouldn't be improving those playing in the OHL.

Its really exciting to have a prospect crushing expectations. It feels like its been a while since we had a breakout candidate like this.

I was quite honestly surprised they even signed him. I really did not expect him to make the roster given the log jam of talent.

I can see where you are coming from based on the logjam. I really think if we can get Lias solid playing time this season (likely in the AHL) and help him find his identity in the process, he will pay very large future dividends for the Kings. He's much better than he typically gets credit for, and has been stuck on the fringe for quite awhile largely due to the FAs Blake as brought in.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up on a team like Vancouver and make solid contributions there at the NHL level this season.

It?s not going to sting, he has had many chances to make this team without that much talent on the team. Hopefully he pans out elsewhere?

With all due respect, by the logic then losing: Bjornfot, JAD, Vilardi, or Kupari for nothing would also not sting? They have all had equal, or greater, chances than Andersson and haven't yet secured a roster spot.

Either way, losing him for nothing after giving up a 2nd round pick to obtain him and then spending 2 years developing him would be poor asset management and definitely would sting. Obviously we can't win them all, but logjam aside (which is also poor asset management) Andersson has the skill today to be in the NHL.

Agreed. He was on such attack mode in the rookie games I commented he?d get exposed in the NHL, but mostly he?s ticked the boxes for not-risky, unspectacular defensive play. Protects well enough along the boards, doesn?t blow his coverage, and has a pretty good stick on the ice. Even seen him break up a couple passes. He?s not getting outpaced so far.

there will be mistakes im sure of it, but on the whole, he has not looked out of place.
 
Anyone remember whose twitter has been the best to follow regarding claims being made? I thought @FriedgeHNIC was the best in the past but I can't remember its been so long since I cared to check it.
