Some inspiration for #Preacher:

The heavy presence of westerns isn’t a shock since the blood of that genre runs through the veins of Preacher even though it isn’t a traditional western. However, I’m somewhat struck by the absence of John Wayne movies since the actor (or rather, his screen persona) is so important to Jesse’s life.

More interesting are the movies that fall further away from the western genre. There’s still violent material like I Saw the Devil, The Raid, and Kill Bill, but there’s also softer inclusions like The Tree of Life, Badlands, Friday Night Lights, and Short Term 12. Tree of Life and FNL at least make some sense since Texas plays a big part in the books, but if Preacher gets picked up for a series, I’ll be looking hard for Short Term 12‘s fingerprints.

Here’s the synopsis of what’s to come in the second half of The Walking Dead season 5:

After the tragic events of the mid-season finale–as well as losing the possibility of a cure in Washington

, DC–Rick Grimes’ band of survivors find themselves on the road, surviving day to day and trying to hold on to their shredded humanity and dwindling hope. Stripped of security and without a direction for the future, some of the group near their breaking point, some find themselves hardened and cold and some just try to grasp on to what little they have left. Though they are still breathing, the line between Rick’s group and the dead is starting to blur. Could there be anything at this point that brings them back to life?

Jayzus. Welcome back The Walking Dead, and goodbye _______. Man, there ain't gonna be no sunshine on this back half. Nice foreshadowing with the baseball bat btw.

Good misdirect with the funeral at the beginning. I can't say I remotely mind the loss. I don't know if it was any different in the comic book, but the dude was pretty much useless on the show and his weapon just looked stupid. It's the frickin' zombie apocalypse and people are still turning their backs on unsecured areas for minutes at a time. Of course, Rick rammed a car of zombie torsos, so he is no genius either. And who puts a bunch of human torsos in the back of their car anyway?

Kind of heartbreaking seeing the girls, more the non-psycho killer one than the psycho killer one.

There were a LOT of hints in that town as to what to expect moving forward. Talking Dead more or less confirmed. I really like Scott Gimple's work so far. He is definitely trending this show towards the darker areas to the point that I don't think we have seen our last major death. And yes, unfortunately Tyrese had been a huge washout pretty much until last night. Either too wishy washy or too rage suicidey. And yeah, when he waded in with hammer in one hand and pocketknife in the other, he looked horribly unprepared. You don't want them to get that close. After thinking about it overnight the one thing that really bothered me...last night was sooooooooo talky. Rick/Michonne/Glen, just get a couch already. You want to set up just how low these people are, do it with more than just a long open mike night at therapy. Still, that was a good solid way to start the backend.

Oh, and having a priest in tow has got to be almost as good as having a doctor in your crew at this point.

In my opinion a very solid first episode of Better Call Saul, it works surprisingly well. Another episode tonight which I'm looking forward to and unless it falls flat I'll definitely be following this show. What did you guys think?

Re: The Walking Dead.

Some very film school directing that episode, no? All the artsy-fartsy stuff kind of threw me a bit.

As soon as I saw that the vehicle they were driving had three black people in it... I was expecting Tyrese or Noah to get it.

1. Noah ruins everything. Seriously.
2. Why is it impossible to have more than one black male character on the show at any given time?
3. And is it just me or was that episode extra depressing? He wasn't even one of my favorite characters, but I'm still really bummed out. Just the way it went down is soooooo sad to me.

Well...that's why it worked. See, too many times they have had the finale' death(cough cough Andrea) just to appease the quotas(oh man, that was the wrong word to use all things considered) and to try to generate drama/emotional impact. FOR ONCE a truly unexpected death...and that's why it worked so well. Add to that the somewhat artsy(which I can forgive, given the results) and loving way in which the character was 'let go' and winner winner chicken dinner. Written by showrunner Scott Gimple, it shows what a firm hand is FINALLY behind the wheel.
BTW, I don't think Nicotero directed before TWD and he has shown a real nice progression. That slow motion scene when the walkers came through the fence was tasty.

A solid premier. Hopefully it keeps it up and improves. And damn it was good to see Mike.

Even Thor looks a little silly with his hammer, and that thing is 100 times the hammer that Tyrese had. This is why Robert Baratheon was never shown on Game Of Thrones with his hammer, and at least that thing was two-handed.

There were four black dudes at the start of the season, then two of them lost limbs and died. Losing a limb seems to be a bad omen when you think of Hershel too.

Very good episode of TWD. Really liked how it was different. Saul was also very entertaining. If all the episodes are like that, it will be a great show.
